Picard Season 1 Episode 6 Review · 4:20pm Feb 28th, 2020
"I am Locutus of Borg. Resistance is futile. Your life, as it has been, is over. From this time forward, you will service us."
So yeah, Picard gets put through the wringer here. Like, so much through the emotional wringer it's not even funny. Even decades on after his conversion, he still has the scars. Like, as soon as he stepped on board the Cube, things start for him. There's this one very poignant scene early on in the episode where Picard's looking up the Artifact, and he stumbles upon a picture of Locutus. The way the shot's framed, -and credit to the camera and computer generation people- it's like you can see the implants directly on where they were on Picard's face. It doesn't help that Picard reaches up and places his hand right where the implants would have been. Oh, Jean-Luc...
Now, Elnor is quickly winning my heart. He's adorable, let me just say and his undying loyalty to our fair Captain is just beyond respectable. Our Romulan Samurai is going to go places. The problem is, all of his character is focused on his devotion to Picard, and he really can't grow beyond that right now. I hope this changes in the near future. Speaking of Romulans, this episode really shows off a bit more of their culture, including a little ritual that's sorta meditation, sorta not. Yeah, sure they're the big bads of Star Trek at times but seeing Picard really allows them to show off more to their culture than I think even the Next Generation did.
Also, Hugh. Just Hugh. He plays a big part in this episode, and you just want to give him a pat on the back. He actually helps Picard throughout this entire episode, XB to XB. They even hug each other like old friends. There's this really moving scene where Hugh takes Picard to face his demons, and shows him implants being removed by Romulan science and Borg slowly starting to gain new lives for themselves. It's just... oh, the feels.
Next week... "Hello Will."
