My Movie Review on Rio (2011) · 2:25pm Feb 19th, 2020

What's up, my good pals?

This is your friendly film, TV show, and episode reporter here with another review.

And today, for my 117th film analysis and 9th installment of my "February Festivity", I'm gonna give you guys my take of Blue Sky Studios's "Rio".

Here's the summary of it:

Blu is a blue macaw who, after getting captured by smugglers as a chick, was taken in by human girl named Linda as her pet. Or loyal companion and friend in his case.

However, when Blu and Linda are approached by an ornithologist named Tulio and told that Blu is the last male of his species, he, Linda, and Tulio travel to Rio de Janeiro to meet the female blue macaw living at Tulio's aviary: Jewel.

Later, though, Jewel and Blu are kidnapped by smugglers, and despite escaping from them afterwards, they're chained together and are unable to go their separate ways.

They'll have to step lively, as they don't want to be caught by the smugglers again and are being trailed by an insanely evil cockatoo named Nigel.

Will Blu and Jewel ever break free of their chain? Or will they be stuck together forever?

What's more, will they even want to leave each other's side?

Having wanted to review this movie for quite some time, there are two words in my mind that I'm proud to describe this movie as:

ABSOLUTE AWESOMENESS!!!

For instance, the direction by Carlos Saldanha, the story by him, Earl Richey Jones, and Todd Jones, and the screenplay by Don Rhymer, Joshua Sternin, Jeffrey Ventimilia, and Sam Harper, were marvelously accomplished. In several ways, the humor that the film had was so hilarious, witty, and well-worked enough to easily be worthy of laughs, and its style and timing was something that I particularly couldn't help but note was influenced not only by Saldanha's sense of humor, but by Chris Wedge's involvement as executive producer. The film wasn't without emotion, heart, and a sense of originality too. Its exploration on the culture of Rio de Janeiro was something that I don't recall has been done before in an animated film, and its story was something that helped the film be all-the-more unique.

The animation of the film was spectacular, if I may add. It may not have had the jaw-dropping pizazz originated by Pixar or Dreamworks, but Blue Sky's style of computer animation was beautiful all on its own. It was even impressive on a comic book kind of level, especially with the character animation.

The music that was composed by John Powell was melodiously marvelous. And so were the songs. The special thing about Powell's score was that it captured a certain feel that paid perfect homage to South American culture, and there was an emotional resonance about it that made it so compelling. Plus, the songs were instantly memorable and all-out fun.

Finally, the voice acting, casting, characters, and character development were incredible.

Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway were awesome in the roles of Blu and Jewel. I loved how their performances and mannerisms deeply correlated with the personalities of their characters, and the chemistry between them was fun enough to make them an incredible duo.

The rest of the cast and characters were excellent too. For instance, Jemaine Clement had tons of the best lines as Nigel, and he gave flawless comedic-timings as well. Along with that, Clement shaped Nigel into perhaps one of the most deliciously classical villains that I've seen in years, and he sounded like he was having lots of fun doing so. Seriously, why are Disney and Pixar not making villains like this anymore?

To top it all off, the characters developed nicely throughout the film and they were lovably unforgettable.

In the end, "Rio" is a bird-filled extravaganza that I'm proud to have joined in on. It's original, fun, and one of the very best of Blue Sky's works.

So, I rate "Rio" five out of five stars.

This was a classic, in my opinion.

Five out of five stars from me too! This is an awesome film!

I mean, it's good and all, but it also wasn't really that memorable to me.

Heh, I still have that poster on my wall from when I went to see Rango in Florida 😋

Hey, it’s perfectly alright. Everyone has a different opinion and taste.

I love this movie hands down! The music, the characters, the scenery. This is a masterpiece of grand proportions! What sells it is the romance between Blu and Jewel, two opposites who managed to look past each other’s differences and discover a whole new side of themselves.
