My thoughts on the Sonic movie. · 1:17am Feb 18th, 2020
On Valentine's day, straight after I signed off from work, I went to see the Sonic the Hedgehog. And... Well... It's actually pretty good. Up there with Detective Pikachu in good video game movie adaptations, which is already a bar pretty low. And to acknowledge the elephant in the room, would the movie be the same if they kept the original design? The answer: yes... And no. Yes, because everything would be the same, but no, because there's dramatic moments that if the original Sonic was still around, you'd want him to die.
Jim Carrey steals every scene he's in. He's basically a tamer version of the Riddler in Batman Forever, and you can tell he's having so much fun. And for the side Characters? They're alright. James Marsden, who plays as Tom, a cop in the movie, is more or less our sort of normal eyes to Sonic's various antics, voiced really great by Ben Schuartz (who also voices Duey in DuckTales).
I highly recommend you see it, even if you're not a Sonic fan like I was when I was 10 (I know, cringe), or a hardcore gamer. But do stay after the credits... Well, not really. After the animated credits, we get a tease for a possible sequel, and if it comes out, I'll be ready to see it.
Well I got good news about the Sonic movie, right now the movie is overperforming!

Birds of Prey: How are you performing so well!?
Sonic: I have no idea!!!
I am a chill Sonic Fan.. not a hardcore by any means and I border on not interestedly interested... if that makes sense. I did play Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 on the gamecube growing up and I have a fondness for 2 that borders on rabid. I found the movie to be surprisingly enjoyable. I laughed myself silly at the doughnut peptalk because I was taking completely off guard. I found it to be quite upbeat and Sonic had much of his powers and didn't quite feel like a video game movie of years past (though I hold a soft spot for the Resident Evil movies)
But anything with Jim Carrey is enjoyable and while my limited Sonic knowledge is in doubt on whether or not game/comic Eggman is AS crazy, I chalk that up to Jim being Jim.
Which was a surprise as I was prepared to hate it. I lost my shit at the post credit scene... I loved it!

I was a hardcore Sonic fan when I was younger... I kept defending Sonic 06, though, looking back, yeah, I was blind. And I kinda I kinda enjoyed the first 2 Resident Evil movies, but I never played the games, and it was obvious the sequels were becoming crap.
I think Eggman/Robotnick is a bit crazy, depending on what media he's in. Jim Carrey was just a blast.
If there is a sequel, I hope it's about Sonic and Tails looking for the Chaos Emeralds, with Robotnick returning with Metal Sonic.

I’m more interested in finding out if Sonic forgot one of his rings and a corrupt government official decides to use it to take over the universe one world at a time.

That would probably be Dr. Robotnick/Eggman if he returns, not in the sequel, but for the 3rd movie and uses it to head to Sonic's homeworld.
