Help! My Heart is Full of Pony! - Call of the Cutie · 8:39am Feb 12th, 2020
Call of the Cutie was a revolutionary episode. Cutie Marks, up until that point, were pretty much just flank tattoos. Yes, they had meaning, (and conveyed information about the character both to the audience, and to other ponies within the universe), but there had been no discussion whatsoever of how they showed up on ponies’ flanks, or what that discovery might actually mean to them.
Faust and team made a conscious decision to transform cutie marks into a metaphor for coming of age, and a vehicle for tackling the oft unaddressed existential crises of childhood.
Not only does this make for very good drama, and open up doors to explore situations that kids can relate to, the entire series would be extremely different had they not chosen to go in this direction. So much world building in Equestria was constructed on the foundations laid down by this single episode!

...It is strange to think of just how much came out of that single episode, aye. So much grew from Season 1 in general, that just seems normal now (to us, at least), and yet of course had to be first introduced at some point.
