It’s happened again! Another author has risen to the challenge of the Not-A-Contest!

And as you might have guessed from the intro image, the protagonist is a griffon.

Not all opportunities last forever... yet, there are some things that should

While I said in my original challenge that I wanted pony on Earth, that was an oversight on my part. I of course meant any Equestrian sapient, so if y’all want to write a story about Iron Will doing motivational talks or Capper doing whatever it is that Capper does, you’ve got my blessing. In fact, between this and other entries, I’ve learned that I wasn’t as inclusive as I ought to have been in the original post.

And from reading Frost’s story notes, this is based on IRL experiences, and I’ve been where he (I’m assuming) has been, and it’s not the greatest place to be, especially when you don’t have a bunch of adorable Equestrian friends to cheer you up.

Those of us in certain fields are limited with what we can put in stories for reasons. Or blogs--y’all know that I rarely blog about my weekend gig, ‘cause of HIPAA rules, and also ‘cause there’s a bunch of stuff you don’t want to know about. And I’ll confess that there are a couple of things in the story I didn’t quite get. That’s not a bug, though, that’s a feature. I make y’all work for some of the fiddly bits in my stories, and it’s only fair that someone submits something to the not-a-contest that’s got a few TLAs that I don’t know. :derpytongue2:

I’ll also say, even though if you’re clever it’s a bit of a spoiler, that I didn’t anticipate the plot twist. Although with reflection, I’m not entirely surprised.

Have you put together a group to put all these stories in?

I'm glad to see that you liked it. I really appreciate the signal boost on this and like that you enjoyed it. It means a lot to me, especially since I wasn't sure how well this would do when I first came up with this.

Plus, Griffons are adorable

No, but I’ve got a library folder.

Which, if I was smart, I’d be mentioning in every not-a-contest-related blog post. :derpytongue2:

I should make a group, but I’m as bad at managing groups as I am at cooking, and it would turn into an unattended kitchen fire in reasonably short order.

5190562
I dunno how much managing you'd really need to do. If you just put the group together other people can join it and put their stories in themselves. *shrug*

Hell, I could do it if you want.

One of the main ideas behind the contest was that a lot of us work as unsung heroes, doing jobs that fly under the radar, and knowing things that Joe Average doesn’t. Careers that are never going to be the focus of a movie or a book or whatever, and yet they’re the jobs that keep society functioning. Plus, it was as good a place as any to put that old advice “write what you know” to the test. All of y’all have done that, and there have been more than a few entries from people on the ground doing jobs that I’m only vaguely aware even exist as a thing that people do . . . I’ll let you in on a bit of a secret, there’s a niche for SoL, for working pony stories. You’re never going to attract the kind of audience that a clopfic will, but maybe that’s for the best.

Plus, Griffons are adorable

Yes, they are. Although I’d argue that they’re not as cute as hippogriffs, but maybe that’s because of Silverstream.

5190567
Silverstream is prime example of Hippogriff cuteness xD

The stories isn’t the part I’m worried about; it’s when they hijack the form for pornographic pictures and I’ve got Knighty or Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeester breathing down my neck to manage my people better.

Hell, I could do it if you want.

Well, Fimfic Authors Are In Your Bed became less of a clusterf:yay:k when somebody else took up the reins and did what I should have did from the very beginning, so if you’re foolishly volunteering to start a group and the moderating duties that come with, I won’t say no. :rainbowlaugh:

The group admins? That's kinda $#itty.

5190572
I don't know if they really do, but in my mind that's what happens.

5190573
Maybe the @$$holes do that, but I haven't seen that in the groups I've joined.

Sure, I'll do it. I'll let you know when it's set up.

Were you planning to add a folder for "not-quite-Not-A-Contest" stories as well? If I remember right, there've been a few in the general spirit of the Not-A-Contest that aren't quite in line enough with the letter (such as it is) to make it onto the current official bookshelf. It'd be nice if there were an easy way to look them up too.

5190584
I can make one. Once the group goes live people that wrote those stories can put them in that folder themselves. Everyone's stories that are in Biscuit's bookshelf have been added into a folder already, as have Biscuit's in a separate one.

Alrighty. Here we go. This is still in a very basic stage. Let me know of any additions/edits/whatever you'd like me to make. And if anyone is up for creating a banner (even if it's just a screenshot of something relevant) it'd be great to have one.

You can link people there in new signal boosts if you'd like. And add them in the proper folders (tell me if you think I should make sub-folders).

Alright, I've gone through all the blogs since the Not-A-Contest was announced, and I think I tracked down all the stories that didn't end up on the official bookshelf. I could've sworn there were more, but it looks like the usual trend is to say a story doesn't quite meet the letter of the contest guidelines and then just toss it onto the official shelf anyway. The exceptions are, in chronological order:

HHW Roundup, boosted in Signal Boosts: This one's called a Not-A-Contest entry in the blog, but apparently missed getting put on the official shelf. I think it's supposed to be in the "canon" Not-A-Contest folder, but you might want to double-check that.

Robbing a Trampoline Store, boosted in Obligatory Signal Boost: Robbing a Trampoline Store: This one's called very much not a Not-A-Contest entry in the blog, but might as well double-check to see if it manages to just barely squeak into the not-quite folder.

Autumnfall Change, boosted in Signal Boost: Autumnfall Change: And finally a story that's easy to sort! Pretty unambiguously in the not-quite folder.

5190603
You should be able to add stories to the group folders as well, but I'll snag those. Thanks.

...you mention a contest and provide no link or info about said contest and it is not in recent blog entries.

Also that last pic is superadorbs. :yay:

5190706
That's because it technically isn't a contest and more of a challenge that we've been trying. It first started with this blog post here

Yeah, it was way back in September that I started the not-a-contest....here's the link to that blog

Ninjaed in my comments, lol

5190721
:rainbowlaugh: Didn't mean too. I just thought I would try to help you out.

5190723
I'm not mad, it's just funny that we both replied at nearly the same time.

5190724
I can agree with you there. :twilightblush:

I’ve learned that I wasn’t as inclusive as I ought to have been in the original post.

You racist.
