"Flashfic 150" Entry, January 2020 · 12:47am Jan 3rd, 2020
I begin this year with a new mini project. One that I wanted to participate in for more than 2 and a half years already, ever since I saw it first, but could not find the time nor the concentration for, because life was showing its ugliest side to me.
But things have cleared up a lot in the last few months; my time management has improved again, my schedule is easier and more organized and my mind is healthier, too. So I begin 2020 by finally joining the "Flashfic 150" contests by Loganberry.
The goal is to write a tiny 150 words story, a flashfic, each month, based on a prompt that Loganberry provides. It's a nice writing exercise and I think it can help greatly with inspiration (not that I would need this *looks at his 100+ story ideas*) and with the construction of elegant sentences that flow nicely, the latter because of the word constraints one has to work with.
I submitted my entry for January 2020 already, only a few hours after I started into the new year and when I saw the new thread of the group's forum in my feed, and I'm copying it into this blog entry to have it stored somewhere else and to open it up to a wider range of readers.
Since the prompt was "A Near Miss" and I had just entered the new year, I felt instantly reminded on oversleeping and missing the start of the new year (something that actually happened to me once when I was very young), so I was writing about Lily Longsocks who nearly missed welcoming the new year with her friends:
.
Lily Longsocks' vision was blurry as she opened her eyes. She had trouble making out details in her room and her head still felt cloudy from the sleep. Then, a searing hot realization came over her: She had fallen asleep while reading the last pages of her newest book, at 8 PM in the evening!
Shock on her face, Lily jumped up from her chair and knocked it down in the process. Her eyes brushed over the clock ever so slightly while she moved, it was five minutes before midnight! The new year was almost here and her friends waited outside with the fireworks!
In a rush, Lily put on her winter coat, a scarf and boots. She grabbed a firecracker from next to the door and bolted outside. Panting, she arrived on town plaza, where Dinky Hooves and her other friends waited.
"You nearly missed it!" Dinky frowned.
.
From now on, I'm making a blog entry like this each month, always after I submitted my entry for the respective month to the contest. In July, once I have gathered enough entries to reach the minimum wordcount for a story submission, I will make an anthology with all my entries.
I can't put into words how glad I am that I can finally participate in the flashfic contests.
Stay easy as a filly!
