My Episode Review on Movie Magic · 3:36pm Dec 27th, 2019

Top of the morning to you, my pals.

This is your friendly film, TV show, and episode reporter here with another review.

Today, for my 18th episode review, I'm gonna be analyzing the second out of three thirty minute specials of Equestria Girls: "Movie Magic".

Here's the summary of it:

The Equestria Girls have been invited to be behind-the-scenes for the upcoming Daring Do film, where they get to meet director Canter Zoom, his niece Juniper Montage, and actress Chestnut Magnifico.

However, some dangerous and mysterious mishaps have been happening around the studio, and it only gets worse when some props that were personally approved by A.K. Yearling are mysteriously stolen. Realizing that production on the film will be put on indefinite hold because of this, the Equestria Girls go on the case to find the relics and figure out who's responsible for all the chaos.

Will the gang save the film? Or will everything fall into shambles?

I really must say, this thirty minute special was a great successor of "Dance Magic".

The story by Noelle Benvenuti was quite charming, really. I'm not sure how many have ever wondered how well the Equestria Girls and a mystery plot would mix together, but to me...this installment answered that question perfectly. It was fun seeing the girls and Spike trying to solve a mystery, and Benvenuti certainly knew how to make things intriguing and unpredictable. Plus, there was some nicely-done humor that was easily worthy of laughs.

The animation and direction was great too. They may not be groundbreaking, but they helped the story be all-the-more alive and interesting. Among the things I couldn't help but note about Ishi Rudell and Katrina Hadley's direction was the three-piece split screen that was used while the girls and Spike were trying to catch the culprit, and the scene switching that happened while Twilight was wrapping up the case. It was so amazing to see how well they translated in the episode.

Finally, the characters and character development in articulation were as pleasurable as ever. The girls and Spike may not have gone through the most emotional of developments, and it wasn't clear on which character Benvenuti wanted to particularly focus on. But, the episode's focus on Rainbow Dash in particular was enjoyable, Spike and Pinkie were able to steal the show any chance they got, and Twilight and Sunset demonstrated minds that were sharp enough to match that of a true detective. Plus, the new characters that were introduced were marvelous.

In the end, "Movie Magic" is an all-out enjoyable and creative installment of Equestria Girls, with particular thanks going to that of Noelle Benvenuti's writing.

So, I rate "Movie Magic" five out of five stars.
