Wow, two blog posts in as many hours . . . such is the price of horsefame.
Without any further ado, I present the lucky 13th entry into my Not-A-Contest:
It’s told in the style of Sarah Cole, which is a conceit that I particularly enjoy (Riverdream at Sunset, for example). It’s also chock-full of period facts--there were boats that were referred to as “hay burners” that were powered by equines, and I legit had to look up what a whip-staff was.
It also has a most delightful line regarding Victorian sensibilities:
“I am fine, you merely startled me. We have many ponies in New York, though usually they wear hats.”
I’m reminded of a line from H.G. Wells War of the Worlds: “I dare say he found me a strange enough figure,
naked, save for my water-soaked trousers and socks...”
Also, ponies and boats . . .
Y’all know i love that.
This was a great period story and I loved the Victorian style and references. And ponies owning and operating their own boat!
Hm, busy at the moment, but I think I'll note that down to look at later; it sounds pretty interesting. Thanks for the recommendation! :)

Yeah, that really resonated with me as well; kinda reminded me of Riverdream at Sunset. And horse-powered boats were a thing that existed, both canal boats being towed, and ‘hay burner’ ferries, so props to BlueBook for knowing that.
