My DnD Adventures as Maud Pie - Part 1: Character Creation · 2:11pm Dec 15th, 2019

I was recently invited to join a DnD campaign (specifically Pathfinder), and I was thinking about what kind of character I wanted to play. Fortunately, this is something I've given a decent amount of thought to in the past, and it didn't take long to settle on my take on Maud Pie.

This campaign is a kingdom builder campaign, and was already partway through when I was invited, so I started at level 6. In this part I'll give a brief overview of my character sheet, as well as some of my thoughts. I'll give slightly more detailed explanations for things that are less self explanatory, for those of you who aren't familiar with the Pathfinder system.

The most important details are as follows -

Race: Dwarf
Class: Wizard
Those of you familiar with the system may be raising your eyebrows at this unusual combination. I looked over many options, and felt this was the best one.

Stats:
Strength: 10 (0 bonus to rolls)
Dexterity :14 (+2 bonus to rolls)
Constitution: 14 (+2 bonus to rolls)
Intelligence: 21 (+5 bonus to rolls)
Wisdom: 12 (+1 bonus to rolls)
Charisma: 5 (-3 penalty to rolls)

There was a point buy of 20, so I used 20 points to buy my stats with rather than rolling for them, as some of you might be more familiar with. I raised my intelligence as high as I could get it, and I also have a magic item to increase it further (Headband of Vast Intelligence) . As for charisma, I actually lowered it as far as I could to gain more points to buy other stats with. I know Maud Pie has incredible strength as well but there's only so much I can do here, and something had to give. I felt showing Maud as an intellectual was more important than showing Maud as a physical powerhouse.

Wizard school: Elemental Earth
Wizards are able to choose particular kinds of magic to specialise in, and they get all sorts of bonuses for doing so. Earth magic was a no-brainer here. I have also made several other choices separately that increase the strength of my spell casting when using earth magic (Racial trait: Stonesinger, Feat: Spell Focus - Earth)

Trait: Clever Wordplay - Bluff
This was a very impactful thematic decision, and in my opinion is the core reason that Maud Pie as a character can be used in a mechanically satisfying way in the Pathfinder system. The skill Bluff is a measure of how good at lying you are, and is ordinarily tied to the charisma stat. You know, the one I have a heavy penalty in. Clever Wordplay takes one skill tied to the charisma stat, and reassigns it to the intelligence stat, which is my highest one. Maud Pie might not be very good at swaying the minds of people who don't know her; but on the same hand, how would you know if she's lying? (I know she scared that guy one time, but that was with Pinkie's help)

Feat: Arcane Discovery - Ioun Bond
One of the options a wizard has is to bond themselves to an object to increase their magical power. This option allows that object to be an ioun stone, a little magic stone that floats around your head. Hello, Boulder!
Additionally, I have conferred with the DM, and we have agreed that Boulder will be an intelligent item with a few lightly homebrewed rules. If I get my hands on a precious stone of particular value and give it to Boulder, he'll eat it and become more powerful! I'll keep track of how much Boulder has eaten, and the DM will let me know when Boulder develops new abilities.

Many details have been omitted here, but I may release a full character sheet in the future if that becomes highly requested. Thanks for reading, see you in the next part!

Heh. If it was 5E, I'd make her a Deep Gnome Monk (way of the 4 elements, just choose all earth abilities).

I don't play D&D, but I do sometimes play roguelikes "in character" as ponies (eg. playing Dungeon Crawl as an Ogre Berserker with the mindset of Limestone Pie) ^^
