Laptop broken plus Patreon. · 11:36am Dec 12th, 2019

I'm very depressed right now, this is the 2nd laptop I've had that had the same hard drive failure! I don't really want to ask, but I could really use some help to get a new one. Even if you can only get me a coffee from Kofi or a few dollars on Patreon helps.

My Patreon us linked at the top of my page, as well as my Kofi. If you can't donate, that's fine. But if you could spread the word, I would be grateful. I'm trying to figure out what to do in the meantime, but don't expect anything new from me until I get a new laptop.

I'll be praying for you my friend.

What kind of laptop do you have? If this is just the drive, it would be a lot cheaper to buy only some cheap SSD instead of the entire machine.

Unless, of course, it's one of those 'great' Apple MacBooks where everything is soldered onto the motherboard...

Then, assuming we're talking about a classic HDD, and it was a mechanical failure of the drive, you could probably buy yourself something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-250GB-Internal-MZ-76E250B-AM/dp/B07864WMK8

That's just an example. There are cheaper options from Kingston, Sandisk, Crucial, and many others (but Samsung makes one of the best SSD on the market).

A few things to consider:

One, is if the HDD and not the laptop was at fault. If it was just one of those mechanical failures of the drive, and the computer still boots and works, it should be OK.

Two, you need to make sure your laptop is one of those with easy access to drive (do you know the exact model? Should be written there somewhere - usually at the back). A few years back, in almost all laptops, all you needed was a screwdriver. But lately, thanks to Apple, some manufacturers began making it hard to disassemble.

In most cases, you need to take the back cover. Here is an example for my Lenovo Y-580:

Nothing really to it - two screws and the covers go down. Try searching for your laptop's exact model or look in the manual. It may be a bit easier or harder

Three, if your laptop is less than 5 years old, there is a chance it has one of the SSD 'dedicated' slots. For example, my Lenovo has the M2 slot (the guy in the above movie first removes the HDD, and then installs the SSD in the M2 slot).

If your laptop has that, then it gives you an option to either buy the standard 2.5 inches SSD and install it in place of your hard drive. OR to buy M2/something SSD, and install it in the dedicated slot, leaving the standard HDD slot intact (so that you can install regular HDD later on if you need more storage).

The easiest option is to use the 2.5 drive slot because there are more products available for that thing, so when in doubt, use that.

Well, that's it... you would have to reinstall Windos after replacing the drive, of course, so unless you have it on disk, don't forget to burn one first. You can download the 'Media Creation Tool' from here:

If, after reading any of the above, you had a 'WTF? That guy is f*cking crazy:trixieshiftright:!' moment, you may want to consult a friend who worked on laptops before :raritywink: It may sound complicated, but it's not. And it's worth it.

If you used a standard HDD til now, and you switch to an SSD, you won't believe how fast your old laptop will suddenly work (unless it is a really, really old thing, but since you use Windos 10...). I wanted to buy myself a new one three years back, but after installing Samsung's EVO 850, my Lenovo gained a new life, and it serves me to this day. 1000$ saved, I call that a bargain :unsuresweetie:.
