Anime Gushing · 3:41pm Dec 9th, 2019
........Okay, so Shadow's been doing this lately, -and yes, I totally blame him for this blog post- gushing about shows he likes and so, therefore, I decided to do the same with a show I recently discovered by that oh so wonderful subscription service... Netflix. Okay, little known fact about me, I play guitar. Been doing so for five years now. I consider myself moderately good. What I'd really love to do, once I get over my crippling social anxiety of course, is to just jam with fellow musicians. Sadly, until that day comes I can only fantasize. And watch this anime.
K-On's the name, and it starts out simply enough. Two high schoolers are on the verge of having their light music club set down, one goes by the name of Ritsu and the other goes by Miu. Ritsu plays the drums and Miu the base, and Miu for the record -in the English Dub- is voiced by the ever so talented and lovely Christina Vee. Yes, that one. Voice of Ladybug, Homura Akemi and Nanoha Takamachi amongst others. Took me a minute to recognize the voice -well a minute and a wiki search- as I knew it sounded familiar. I think Vee is using a variation on her Homura voice, one that allows her to emote more. Imagine the most moe character you can think of, think Fluttershy and you've got Mio.
Seriously, how can you argue with a face this cute?
Now, eventually, they're joined by borderline parody sue Tsumugi Kotobuki, known by Mugi for short. A classy, rich girl who's as sweet as they come. Finally, they get Yui on guitar... eventually, as guitars are expensive man! I warn you right now if you want to learn guitar be prepared to pay upwards of 500 dollars or more just for the guitar itself. This is not a cheap hobby. Now, if Mio didn't exist, Yui would be my favorite character as I empathize with her. Like, I really do. She's exactly how I used to be when I first got my guitar and before I got some self-confidence and a good teacher. (Shameless plug for my teacher's band here!) Socially awkward and not knowing what the hell I was doing when it came to the instrument.
Adorably sweet character interactions, check!
Wonderful art style? Check.
Music references up the wazoo? Check.
Seriously, I urge you to give this anime a chance. You, over there in the audience? Go, go on! Shoo, you've got an anime to watch!
The Mio urges you!
I need to check this out! By the way, I have a dare for you, Bricklayer! I dare you to not cry after watching the entirety of AngelBeats!

Hmph, is that a challenge? I watched Madoka so I think anything AngelBeats can throw at me is peanuts.
5166651
Yes. it is. Now........
On a side note, what is Madoka?
5166652
It is the Eva of magic girl anime.
Wish I could watch anime right now but work calls and I will be busy for the next 12 hours.
5166671
OK. What is Eva?
Wait, Madoka Magika? OK. I have it on my list, I need to check it out...............

....calling it the Eva of Magical Girl anime isn't all that inaccurate. Or calling it the Gundam of Magical Girl Anime might work too, as like Gundam it basically all but murdered the more ideological type of series for its genre. Oh sure, certain series like Sailor Moon and Nanoha still exist afterwards, but for the most part, magical girl anime as we know it died as soon as Madoka hit the scene. Now, you gotta do something different to really succeed at the genre as Kill La Kill did.
Hey man when you gonna jam with me?
(Semiserious inquiry)

I always thought Nanoha was the Gundam analog.
5166919
No, Nanoha is the 'super robots in general' analogue.
My brother and I watched it and it was adorable!
