D&D: why the new OGL is really bad

There's some controversy right now about the new OGL (Open Gaming License) published by Wizards of the Coast, the company behind Dungeons & Dragons.

I don't talk about D&D here a lot, since I know it's not relevant to Fimfiction, but I think it's worth getting this news out. Also they're owned by Hasbro, the same company that own MLP, so it's worth knowing what they're up to.

Where's all the hippogriffs at? · 11:52pm Dec 5th, 2019

So apparently I've published the only story on this site about hippogriffs to date.

This seems, perhaps, implausible. I think "hippogriffs" must be a pretty new tag, which nobody's got round to using yet. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to go and find stories about hippogriffs and pester the authors to get them tagged.

Yes it's very new. I requested "abyssinians" for my last fic, and suggested some others while they were at it.

I always did wonder, when does one use the species wide tag? Since there is one for changelings too, but it must be more than just the tag when there is a changeling. But if you are using an OC wouldn't you use OC tag? And if you are using named changelings they all have their own tags.

Like I have a romance story with Novo in it. But I imagine you use 'Hippogriffs' or any general tag for when it's something set on Aeris and more for their society in general?

Maybe it'd be worth it to write a story about the Hippogriff gift-giving xmas Silverstream mentioned that one time :pinkiehappy:

My opinion, speaking for myself, is always use the species tag instead of OC. People refine search by species but no one searches for "OC."

(Wearing my "SockPuppet" hat – "AtomicClop" is just my porn account.)

I figure it's appropriate for any story with at least one OC or obscure character of that species, or that's about the species or its society. So for example, a story about the student 6 wouldn't have the "changelings" tag, because Ocellus is a well-known individual rather than a representative of her people, whereas a story where Ocellus goes home to the hive for Hearths Warming probably would.

Please do one on the Seaponies and Deer tags X3

The story Eigengrau Zwei: Die Welt ist Grau Geworden by Kudzuhaiku features a hippogriff by the name of Blackbird Coffyn as one of the deuteragonists. I'm guessing it came out well before the tag was added as an option. It's part of the Weedverse, which is an insanely extensive AU that is focussed on a wide variety of characters living in Equestria and beyond, and that generally takes a more true-to-life approach as to what it would be like to live in a magical and dangerous world. Probably wouldn't recommend Eigengrau as an entry point, it's extremely dark, though it has some super interesting world building for the lands outside of Equestria.

There are a lot of stories with hippogryphs in them, however very few have the actual tag.
The Tale of the Hippogriff is not only my favorite Hippogriff story of all time, but probably one of my favorite fanfics of all time.
Its a relatively quick read, but I was a blubbering idiot by the end.

When it comes to adventure stories, there are certain qualities you look for. Compelling characters with goals to strive towards, tight pacing, a plot with multiple twists and turns, and an ending which leaves the reader wholly satisfied. OleGrayMane’s The Tale of the Hippogriff has all of these and more.
Its main protagonist, the titular hippogriff, Celia, flies off to parts unknown in an effort to locate her long-lost father and mend her mother’s fragile heart. Along the way, she discovers aspects of herself she never knew as well as the true natures of war, magic, and the hearts of men (er, ponies and griffons).
Emotions run strong, from love and hate to tragedy and triumph. A relatively compact read at less than 65,000 words, OleGrayMane crams in more depth than most authors can in four times that length, creating a mythical story of manageable proportions.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to go and find stories about hippogriffs and pester the authors to get them tagged.

A more effective approach might be the one that user marcgraus is using to get all of the stories with Gilda organized so that they can be found. So far as I can tell, he's just site-searching, then adding them to the pre-existing Gilda group. Making a Hippogriffs group then asking interested users to add stories would be more effective than trying to get authors to properly tag, IMHO.

There is already a hippogriffs group, though without many stories in it.

5165552
I hadn't known. I think the thing to do, then, is to start stocking it with stories as they're found.

You can just do what I do and use Google dorking to find stories.

Here, try googling:

site:fimfiction.net intext:hippogriff

Trust me, the Google site crawler is pretty competent.

Oh... Haha I figured out why your having trouble. Try searching 'hippogriff' singular, no one tags species in the plural.
