    Seasonally Appropriate Content

From October 2016 through October 2017:

I participated in every weekly contest at Poetry Nook. Of the 52 poems I entered during that time, I won the contest once and got four "honorable mentions." One of those was for the following, the poem I entered Christmas week of 2016.

A Writeoff Story Out in the Wild · 10:16pm Dec 1st, 2019

The 94th Writeoff event:

Was entitled "Glass Masquerade," and uncoincidentally, that was also the prompt for the stories folks had to write.

It was an original fiction contest, but when I saw the prompt, my brain immediately coughed up a picture of the Glass Cat from the Oz books. Bungle was her name, and she first appeared in the series' 7th installment, The Patchwork Girl of Oz, in 1913. And since the Oz books have been in public domain for decades, I could write a story about her without running afoul of the Writeoff's rules for original fiction: "Submitted works to this event should fall under the following description: Works not based on other work under U.S. copyright."

So I wrote a story called "'Twas Brillig," it got 4th place, and I set about revising it based on the feedback. I sent it to a couple markets, and it's finally found a home on a website called Zooscope.

And we all lived happily ever after!
