150th blog post!!!!!

Normally, I won’t give my opinion on something happening on the Internet until it’s almost over. But this time, I know enough about the subject to not make a complete idiot out of myself.

As you’ve probably heard by now, YouTube is changing its’ laws about collecting data from children. Which, of course, is a big issue for many creators and businesses. The funny thing is, Youtube was originally designed for people over the age of 13.

I don’t think that removing the comments section and targeted ads is such a bad thing. Children shouldn’t be swayed by consumerism so early on, and certainly shouldn’t be chatting with strangers. However, I think that channels that make content directed at children specifically should be marked a kids' channels, and their data collection should be limited. If a channel makes videos that don’t have an age demographic, they should be allowed to keep their data collection the same. Having a Google account if you’re under the age of 13 is already illegal, and you don’t get too much of your data collected if you’re not signed in.

As a kid, I was shielded from YouTube and the Internet in general until I was about 9 or 10. Well, except for PBSKids, which was my entire childhood. That, and Nickelodeon (back when it was good, in 2013-2017). And when Youtube for Kids came out, I mainly stuck to that. My parents downloaded it on my iPod Touch, and it took me 7 months to realize that I could just google Youtube and get the real version. So, I gradually transitioned to that. At this point, as long as it’s not graphic or contains too much language, they don’t really care.

All I can say is, if this happened back when I was a 6th grader, I would have been screwed.

Anyway, that’s all for tonight, hope you all have a great evening, and peace out!:twilightsmile:

I very much agree with your point about not collecting data from children and not targeting them with ads. Also, just as your parents did, it is a great idea to monitor what your kids are looking at; it's that responsible, grown up thing we as parents are supposed to do. Kids have their part to hold up, as well to follow the rules and police themselves. That way they learn responsibility and maturity.

A good bit of so much of the reaction from google, YouTube and other sites is that they care about who and how people use their site. They police it as best they can but someone is always looking to find fault with them and sue them for things they can't always control. Sometimes no matter how hard they try, unpleasant things happen. T The best thing we can all do is watch out for each other.

And congratulations on your 150th post! You always have interesting thoughts.

How come I never heard about this?!
