me checking the dislike ratio on my new story

Glad to know bigotry is still alive and well in this fandom.

It's glad to see some of us didn't watch the same series as I did.

    So where I've been

Okay, uh... how do I begin this? Well, I suppose I should start with the obvious. Yes, I've been distracted. If you follow me on Archive that should be obvious. And if you don't, you totally should btw. Yes, I'm shameless.

Complying with COPPA and why you should NOT worry. (More clickbaityness!) · 3:21pm Nov 14th, 2019

Okay, okay. I honestly do not see why so many people are up in arms about this. Like, I don't.

Hell, even the video itself at 1:30 explains that you can just set your channel via advanced settings to 'not for kids' and that really should be the end of it right?

Yelling at Susan won't change anything, and I'm sure the staff are... aware of the issues as Mark pointed out with a certain Reddit post. Now, apparently I've heard a bot will be used to enforce these changes, one that somehow learned to be homophobic but... yeah, I still don't see this getting worked up in arms over.

Quite honestly, I can actually see this blowing up in Youtube's face as let's be honest, nobody wants their channel marked as 'for kids' do they?

That being said, the ones this change will affect will be people like Logan Paul -so hooray there- as he does have 'back-in' ads aimed and kids and I think we can all safely say he's NOT for kids really.

Youtube could actually lose a lot of money this way because now it can't blast ad after ad on certain weird channels with nursery rhymes. Good riddance.

Also, I heard one comment on how Youtube is as bad as Bethesda now. This sums up my reaction pretty well.

Bethesda is banning people outright who try and help with Bug fixes... I think Youtube has a bit of a ways to go before they reach that.

Look, I'm just so... done with Outrage Culture -ooh, more buzzwords- in general. Is it really worth it guys, like is it really?

Well what if you're channel has content that's not meant for kids specifically, but it's something that they can still sit through?

Well, not much you can do there. It's more often than not the parent's fault for not keeping an eye on their kids innit?

5155443
Yes, but what should I set it to?

5155444
Just set it to "Not for Kids'.

5155447
Realized there's a setting where you can individually set each video. Already did it with the three public videos that I have posted.

For what I understand and on what I research, the COPPA rule that recently been updated by the FTC, doesn't want sites like Youtube collecting data from minors. But Youtube have been in breach of the rule since always, since it's not possible to implemented a sure way to avoid it without severely authoritarian measures.

What has people up and uproar is that Youtube, with their new TOS, is essentially putting the responsibility they cannot uphold to it's users.

The problem is that 'for kids' and 'not for kids' can vary insanely region by region.

5155442
I just went over it.
I think, if a kid would be safe watching the thing, start to finish, you could stand to mark it as 'Made For Kids'. But if you've doubts, best mark it as 'Not for Kids' then 'Not just for over 18s'.
Also keep in mind what people might say in the comments.

Well, I agree it is rather lazy.
But on the other hand, it is a site that houses more videos than one can count so I think this could also be very time-effective.
Either that, or Youtube's company schedule could end up full for the next half-decade with all the inconvenience that would cause not only to them but to users, especially in view of the recent accidental lockdowns on accounts.
The choice to make everyone responsible for their own ratings is, I think, a fair one.
Has its problems.
But could be much worse.

By the way, thank you for putting this up regardless.
It's good that you're willing to hear them out and understand the problem from the other end. Essential for the argument.
Not everyone does that, I find. Makes it very difficult.
You've done the right thing. You've realised where it has and could still go wrong but you're willing to simply that point out to both parties and advise mindfulness and preparation rather than panic and rage at slights not yet inflicted.
Very mature of you. Keep it up.:twilightsmile::raritywink:

I do agree, but they are still some issues with how Youtube is enforcing their new TOS. Apparently if you don't mark your content as suitable for children, because you deem it not appropriate for them, but Youtube deem it it is, you'll get punish regardless of your good faith.

And the punishment is either a heavy fine, the deletion of your channel or both. How can people accept the consequence of a risk that is bound to happen? Announcing your channel is 18+ want stop a minor to watch it. The mature filter, personally, I know two to three ways how to bypass it without an account and their easy to find, so a minor would have no problem and I ain't speaking how you can just create an account with a fake age.

5155615
Yeeeeeeeah, so many people are ranting and raving over what's basically a minor issue in the grand scheme of things. It's ludicrous. I am just so DONE with outrage culture.

5155636
Well, it's early days and they do seem aware the system is imperfect.
If there are problems, really I'd say the best thing to do is send your concerns to Youtube HQ or just someone on the site who can bring news of the problem or just the potential problem to those who can remedy it.

The reason people are freaking out is because since the FTC's requirements are so vague on what counts as "for kids" and "not for kids", it makes the situation more concerning.

For example, if a video has cartoon characters, and the video is "for kids" what does that mean? Do anime count as cartoon characters? What about live action or CGI characters? How old do the kids need to be for cartoon characters to be counted as okay in a video? Does this include original character drawings?

You see how there are many possibilities but the statement is not specific to the point where everyone understands what to do? That is why people are freaking out. It also doesn't help that adults like cartoon characters too, so that makes the statement even more confusing.

So let's say your channel is for kids, but an adult watches your video without knowing the video is "for kids" - because seriously, when would the public look at a video to see if it's "for kids" on a channels features? Let alone the public knowing who the video is targeting- well then congradulations! The creator gets fined 42,530 dollars because an adult accidentally watched their "for kids" video. And most people don't have 42,530 dollars to pay a fine. So all the changes make every video a possible risk of a fine or otherwise.

... I'm sorry, how on earth is that fair, let alone a good idea?! It also doesn't help that YouTube's bot and the FTC could have different ideas for what is "for kids" and "not for kids", so just based on different opinions, if they disagree, they could fine you too.

On top of this, the creators who make kids content get all features turned off and get treated as if they themselves are kids, regardless of age .... Um excuse me, WHAT?! .... and on top of that, if the public has no idea what videos are labeled - since the videos are not shown unless you go to a channel's features, as explained above- then it is very easy gor a channel to get into trouble they have no control over.

That's why people are freaking out. The FTC guidelines are vague and be easily mislead, YouTube done Messed Up Big Time, and as always, the creators get the punishment.
Sounds right huh? NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPEEEEEE!!!

At the time I made this post, that particular piece of information hadn't exactly come out. See, if we had known that then, then yes I would be a bit more annoyed. Thing is though, we all know how the internet reacts to censorship and such, like the last COPA law. With any luck, it'll get reverted. This is pretty damn close to unconstitutional.
