My TV Show Review on The Spooktacular New Adventures of Casper · 2:35pm Nov 12th, 2019

Hello there, my good friends.

This is your friendly film, TV show, and episode reporter here with another review.

And today, for my 16th TV show review, I'll be reviewing "The Spooktacular Adventures of Casper".

Here's the summary:

A sequel to the live-action Casper film, the series chronicles the misadventures of Casper the friendly ghost, whether it's having to put-up with his uncouth uncles (Stretch, Stinkie, and Fatso) or simply spending time with his human housemates, the Harveys.

I wasn't originally intending on reviewing this show right away. But, after seeing full episodes of the series available on YouTube, I figured that it wouldn't hurt to go ahead.

To be honest, though, I wasn't exactly impressed with this program. Less than how I felt towards the film, might I add.

The show does have its positives, which is what I'd like to start with.

The performances of the show's vocal ensemble was something that I found to be really top-notch. I admired how much the performers were throwing themselves into their roles, and the amount of personality they gave their characters. They were able to make any moment they were given count, and that's what I'm giving them a thumbs up for.

The animation was also impressive. It may not be able to compete with the styles and accomplished cartoons of today, but as a product of its time, it was visually fun.

In spite of these positives, though, the series as a whole was extremely dull.

The characters definitely have great personality, but the character development was largely lacking. In contrast to its cinematic predecessor, the series provided the characters with little to no buildup, not even emotionally. They were rather flatly written.

The writing and direction of the series was lacking as well. Among its many problems, the stories had zero moral. They didn't provide the characters and viewers with anything to learn or live by, which is important if you want to make the writing compelling. There wasn't any emotional impact or meaning in the writing either.

Finally, the overall comedy wasn't as laughable or entertaining compared to the movie. The fourth wall breaking jokes and pop culture references certainly stood out in terms of the two categories I mentioned, but they also felt a little jarring and got more annoying overtime. The jokes outside of that, sadly, were a lot more flat and heartless than anything else in terms of execution. At times, it even felt like the production team was overdoing it with the comedy, and not in the best way either.

In the end, while the vocal performances and animation certainly were top-notch, the series as a whole was more dull than fun due to the rather flat comedy and storytelling, and the lack of meaningful buildup for the characters.

So, I rate "The Spooktacular New Adventures of Casper" two out of five stars.

That’s okay. There’s nothing wrong with you or anyone else liking this series. I’m just not a fan of it.

What’d you think of my review, though? Was it reasonable?
