If written well, like say, God Empress of Ponykind, or, Fallout Equestria, or the like, they can be good

Both those abominations are about as grimdark as a story can get.
No i don't think they are dumb if they are done right.
the Show itself has Pretty dark stuff. remember the Episode About the swampfever? or the three suicide episodes. There was also the extinction timeline in the Season 5 finale.
MLP isnt just a Kids tv Show. Its a Fantasy Show, and can include dark stuff just as much as zelda can.

I believe it was, in Pinkie's case, based on the fact that she wasn't all there in the first few seasons, know what I mean? She's gotten better as a character, but in the beginning, she was a co dependent wreck of a mare.
Its edgy garbage written for edgy garbage readers. Its not even good torture porn. Headless Rainbow does good writing in that regard, though I think he or she has actual talent and could do some gut punching stuff if they would get out of their niche. But ah well...
As for Giftgiver... okay, its not a bad story, by any stretch. And its not something that really leaves you questioning the authors sanity. It was just viscerally unsettling. So, I guess it did what it set out to do, but the fact that it makes me pause speaks volumes.
The only other fictional media that upset me that much was the God Hand scene from Berserk

Grimdark can work if done well, but too often it's used by fourteen year olds who try way too hard to come off as dark and edgy and deep. But done right, it can absolutely work.
