OC spotlight: Sammy/Sammy Gearings

It's the OG OC, guys! Or at the very least, the first OC that actually has their name out there beyond just friends and family. I've got a few more hangin' around that haven't seen the light of day for a while.

Anyway, Sammy Gearings is a bit of a mishmash character I made in middle school alongside Zoey, Caleb, Brody and Lisa for the script-formatted OG Wielder of the Orb. Just like pretty much every other character I made from this time period, Sammy was based mostly on myself, with occasional traits pulled in from other people I knew at the time.

Canonically in my stories, he's a middle-school-age boy (who could've known?) with a distinct love for technology (again, who could've known???). Funny thing is, he's also actually a bit of a holdover from an even older time period in my life, when I was somewhere between the "casual fan" and "fanfic writer" stages of the Pokemon fandom.

Short to say, Sammy was originally a self-insert Pichu gijinka OC.

Yup, you read that right.

In fact, my Minecraft skin is still Sammy! Outside of adding a grey jacket (which I proceeded to lose IRL in seventh grade) to the skin, Sammy's completely unchanged.

Anyway, back to Sammy himself. Depending on whether you're looking at the Pichu gijinka or the techhead geek, he has either dirty-yellow or very dark-brown hair. He likes striped shirts too, just like I still do, because obvious self-insert is obvious. He doesn't wear any glasses, 'cause I only got mine in seventh grade, and he wears blue jeans because I didn't bother much with the pants on my Minecraft skin and just left it mostly as-is. I don't really wear jeans much in real life.

As for whatever else there might've been about the Pichu gijinka Sammy, there really isn't much other than the fact that the entire reason why he existed was because of a weird dream I had at the beginning of middle school.

So, let's take a closer look at Sammy Gearings now, shall we? If I remember correctly, I actually wrote him to have some kind of familial relationship with DanTDM because I was a little hecker back in middle school that didn't know what "copyright infringement" meant. Why do I say this when I'm talking about a character who ultimately showed up in a fanfic?

Oh, because... y'know, the whole script-formatted OG Wielder of the Orb was something that I legit wanted to publish in bookstores.

And make a movie about.

Heck.

Oh, and also the last name was literally only tacked on as an afterthought because I needed him to have a last name for something I don't remember anymore.

Thing is, there's an even older set of characters I've got, for a completely different fandom. But that's for another time.

Yeah, I already knew I had no chance in hell of getting published, but I still axed the actual self-insert for lore reasons and at this point a majority of Area Negative Zero has no meaningful ties to things that belong to other people (Daybreaker and Acid are legitimately untied, Kinnegan is someone else's OC but deliberately avoids any hint of the fandom she's from as a security question, so that just leaves my namesake Mega Man Battle Network OC and the D&D-derived equine with outright lampshading of how poorly she would fit in MLP despite said equinity)
