Friendship is Card Games: Kenbucky Roller Derby #2 & #3

We return to the cutthroat world of G5 roller derby, where Sunny’s trying her darndest to prove she’s more than just a casual skater… and has assembled one of the most ragtag teams of misfits this side of the Mighty Ducks in the process. Let’s see how the story’s developed from there.

No, not mine. The Barcast's. The last call is currently under way, and if you want to hear my part in the grand interview lightning round, you can tune in at 4:20 Eastern/1:20 Pacific (about an hour from this posting.)

Yes, 4:20 on 4/20. No, I do not partake. Sorry to disappoint. :derpytongue2:

    Pest List

Just something I whipped together for fun one day, set to a possibly recognizable tune, all intended in good fun. And hey, given that I derived my Fimfic handle from a misremembered detail of the Mikado, it's only appropriate. :derpytongue2:

Friendship is Card Games: d20 Pony, Ch. 9, Pt. 1

Goodness, it’s been almost two years since I last checked in on Trailblazer’s adventures. IDW putting out comics almost as quickly as I could review them will do that, especially given all of the G5 video media coming out concurrently.

    Conflicted Crossroads

I have an interesting dilemma with an upcoming story, and thus I turn to the Fimfic public (or that portion of it that sees these blogs) for its wisdom.

Frankenstag's Monstrosity · 10:53am Oct 28th, 2019

This one may require a bit of background. Bear with me for a moment, please.

I dropped the Gameloft MLP mobile game after several months. They were slowly rolling out new content—this was shortly after the minecart minigame released—but the overall experience was frustratingly repetitive and the "game" design, such as it was, was transparently intended to encourage the purchase of premium currency. Of course, these problems are endemic to many mobile games, which is why these days I get most of my cell phone-based entertainment from webcomics and Fimfiction.

That said, I still kept tabs on the Gameloft game via Derpibooru, which has at least kept appraised of the characters they add and the memes it engenders (Costs Real Money, the infinite Octavia glitch, Wow! Glimmer, and so forth.) So I know they've never been afraid to add characters who only show up in the comics. I figured they'd get around to the Shadow Play story arc at some point, with its antagonist who could make fiction reality.

But I never expected them to go full Shelley.

Well played, Gameloft. Well played.

Is this a different Nyx than Past Sins Nyx?

Speaking of, If I plug my Nightmare Nyx story, will you read it? Considering I feel it's one of my most underated shitfics and also I actually put effort into the cover art.

I've been thinking of compiling a list of good mobile games that aren't moneygrabs (ie. no ads, no in-app purchases). There are still people who make games out of love, they're just hard to find these days.

I’ve played the gameloft pony game since it came out with no cash spent. I did play a lot of commercials though.

I would entirely support you in this endeavour. I'd even be happy to mention a few particularly good ones that I've found (while sorting through a lot of the IAP-ridden dreck). I'm happy to recommend something that's free-to-try with an IAP or two to unlock the full gameplay. It's the slimy oceaon of "games" that are clearly designed to maximise revenue at the expense of gameplay that really annoy me, so working together to point at the handful of gems hidden in the slime has to be a good thing.

There was the actually-free version Amazon released, but it was far behind the original in getting updates and for all I know it eventually just stopped updating entirely.

I played and actually enjoyed the game for a long time (and even spent a bit of money here and there)... until it got so decayed it just plain stopped loading, or the save got corrupted and restarted from scratch with nothing to show for the months I'd put into it :ajbemused:

As for Frankenstag... Who knew the secret to creating life was "pay 50 gems"? :rainbowderp: It is the work of a mad scientist.

I'm an anomaly these days in that I refuse to own a smartphone (I stick to the archaic flip-phone TYVM), so I do all of my gaming on my Playstation. The whole micro-transaction thing is just as bad in a lot of the mainstream games (i.e. anything put out by Activision-Blizzard, EA, 2K, Ubisoft, Warner Bros, or Bethesda), but with the added kick in the sensitive-bits of charging you for the game in the first place. It genuinely saddens me that a medium I enjoy so much has become so awful because of "easy money" manipulations.

"Knowledge is knowing the Frankenstein isn't the monster.
Wisdom is knowing that Frankenstein IS the monster."

Exactly.

Yeah, I'm one of those micro-transaction idiots that totally falls for the scam. I've already finished that LTQ and am just sticking around for the community prize now. :twilightsheepish:

Except the challenges part of this one is actually kind of fun instead of just hitting the 'do it' button every [x] hours.

I stopped counting how many comic characters they added around the 30 mark.

But I do remember that they already added Shadowlock months ago.

Also the arc's unofficial title was From The Shadows.

Still you stuck with it more than I did. Played the game for like 2 months, got all the Mane 6 except Dash and all the Elements except Magic, but because of the absurd gem costs and drop rates I wasn't even halfway done with the initial story. That's obscene.

#yes frankenstein's monster is an actual magic card #the dark was weird

Fun fact: it's not the flavor that's the weird part of the card, either; gaze upon the face of insanity.

I've been playing the game for years and I still haven't gotten tired of it. It's (obviously) still repetitive but at least not as much as a lot of other "build your town" games feel to me, and the moneygrab thing is a lot less bad than it used to be unless you're someone who needs to have every randomized name character that comes out.

Fun fact: the best way to get lots of gems are the plundervines that pop up in the four main areas once a day, so you can buy make lots of friends as long as you leave the Tree of Harmony in an eternal state of half-dead, vine-ridden limbo.

(Also perhaps most importantly, they finally installed a cloud save feature)

I ceased the Gameloft game when I realized that progress wasn't really progress and it was actually a treadmill.

Is that... it's been a while, but that looks like they
quoted (ponified) the book? Not just copied from one of the films? Impressive!
(Or is there some adaptation out there where the "monster", as in the book, is quite possibly the most well-spoken character in the story?)

Yeah, turns out that if you abandon your child at birth, and then on top of that later break a deal with them, by destroying their prospective companion (in front of them, though not intentionally, as I recall), they might just turn out a little maladjusted and angry at the world in general and you in particular, for some strange reason.
But how could poor Victor have ever guessed that would go wrong?!

(But yeah, seriously.
A: "Well, I was abandoned by my creator, and most people are horrified by the sight of me, but I know there is good in humanity, for this blind man is my friend, and I have learned to read and so have learned much of the world that will not let me in. Alas, even that ended, when the blind man's family in their ignorant fear drove me away. I appear to be cursed to loneliness, able to see camaraderie and society only from afar. If only I had a companion, even just one, though if I could raise a family, that would be even better; we could go to some remote place and live in peace there, and I will be able to use my terrific strength to build and defend, but not seek to strike against others. But I'm not there yet, Creator, and I don't really trust you for obvious reasons, so I will use violence if you will not do at least this one thing for me, and make me a companion."
V: "Okay."
[makes companion, getting nearly finished]
V: "Wait, what if this is a ploy to breed an army and wipe out humanity!"
[smashes companion]
A: "...You couldn't even just have said no? You had to give me hope, and show me my dreams in the flesh, and then destroy them?
...Well, congratulations to you, I suppose. You have won, and crushed my spirits, and denied me any chance of being more than the horrific brute you so tragically and inexplicably have seen me as from the moment of my ill-done creation. Fine. GUESS HOW I'M GOING TO START?!"
V: "I think perhaps I have made some mistakes."

(Been a while since I read the book, but I'm pretty sure that's basically how it went.))

Hello, fellow actively-no-smartphone-haver!

5146838
Considering it was his surname, Frankenstein was the monster because Frankenstein wasn't the monster, or in other words the doctor refused to be a parent to what was for all intents and purposes his child. (Although the wording I use is "Doctor Frankenstein was far more of a monster than the flesh golem he created")

5146840
The Nyx in question are a species of dream crafters who live on the moon in Nightmare Moon's FIENDship is Magic issue. She corrupted them into the Nightmare Forces seen in the Nightmare Rarity arc... I think. There's a bit of a chicken-and-egg confusion, and the whole concept doesn't really gel with Luna as dream guardian.

You'll be doing the world a service.

I'm glad you're all enjoying it. It just wasn't for me.

Hey, grave robbers don't come cheap. And even if you're reanimating in an area where you don't need to rely on a timely lightning storm, you still need to think about the power bill.

5146907
It's still absurd that Frankenstein's Monster is legal in more formats than Twilight Sparkle.

5147094

Or is there some adaptation out there where the "monster", as in the book, is quite possibly the most well-spoken character in the story?

The monster accounted for himself quite well in the comic, at least until his pyrophobia kicked in.

Horrible as his actions were, I do have to appreciate how Victor's attitude managed to predict the dangers of far more malicious artificial intelligences and zombies. Being wrong genre savvy when that genre doesn't exist yet is pretty impressive. Imagine if he worked at Cyberdyne.

5147247
So if Frankenstein was able to animate his creation without a manual of flesh golems, does that mean he wrote the book on the subject?

5147337
According to Young Frankenstein, he did. >_>

5147337
Heh. :)

Hah, okay, good point, I suppose, though I still don't think I'd trust him not to mess it up on his own. Might be useful as part of a team, though.
