When the Wind Blows · 5:23am Oct 16th, 2019
I'm really late to the party seeing this movie, since its almost as old as I am, but I just saw When the Wind Blows and dear god I feel... caught between agony, pity, and inspiration.
A lot of my European friends have told me about it, and recommended it. I know now why they refused to say much about the film. It tore my heart out and showed it to me. It starts slow, but it gets darker, and darker, and somehow when you think it can't get any more depressing it does it, and goes the extra mile. By the end I was sitting there slack jawed, knowing full well how it was going to end but couldn't stop watching.
If you haven't seen it, find it. The writing and voice acting is excellent, and the mix of stop motion and animation is a little weird but if you like sad stories you'll love this story. It didn't make me bawl like a baby like Mary and Max but it left me feeling heart aching sorrow for the married couple. I was around for the ass-end of the cold war, I remember a lot of the talk of fallout and nuclear warheads. Hard to believe the governments passed out those useless pamphlets to keep people calm...
If you feel like you've got too much joy in your life, I highly recommend this film.

Ah yeah that one. You know it's going to be something when a bunch of people are saying
"Oh man you gotta watch this movie!"
"What's it about?"
*dead silence from everyone*
"...ah shit it's one of those aint it"

Exactly.
Then again I enjoy a good depressing movie. Its almost like it makes the world seem bright and cheerful by comparison. and yeah, these are the same friends who recommended Plague Dogs, Mary and Max, Felidae, and Chirin's Bell.
