Tumbleweed vs. Daring Doubt · 2:00am Sep 22nd, 2019
Once again, I am remiss. I haven't been keeping up with new episodes and/or leaks, so ... yeah. Part of it is 'cause I've been fairly busy, and part of it's 'cause I'm subconsciously hoarding random pony eps to randomly watch on Netflix so they'll at least be New-To-Me. Like, I'm pretty sure there's a handful of random episodes from seasons 7 & 8 I still haven't touched yet.
BUT.
This week, it's a Daring Do episode! And the LAST Daring Do episode! Seeing as of how I am a pretentious hack who can't resist talking about writing, I was ALL ABOUT this bidness.
And really, my main takeaway here is that Equestria apparently has rather lax copyright laws, if any rando can just come along and publish a Daring Do novel. I'm vaguely reminded of the various people who wrote (totally unauthorized) "sequels" to Cervantes' Don Quixote, which kind of means fanfic was there from the beginning of the modern novel, but I digress. Also all that is Spanish so go poke Aragon with a stick to write a blog about it sometime so he can stop talking about his butt or whatever. That man is a degenerate.
Annnnyway, pony show!
Unsurprisingly, the next twenty minutes of magical horse cartoon don't center on the nuances of fiction, but instead go into yet another pulpy adventure pastiche. Which is fine. It was entertaining enough, and they shoehorned in a "listen to people" moral lesson. And, y'know, we also got Fluttershy Wearing A Hat which is bound to be a porny derpibooru tag any minute now. Oh! And some vaguely anti-colonialist bidness with the Guardian Spirit Guy (like shit I'm going to try to spell his name. I'm on my third beer here).
But hey, at least the Truth-Telling-Amulet was used for some pretty fun gags. I hope HenchPony #3 has a promising opera career.
This ep also reminds me I kind of want to write at least one more silly little Daring Do fic, but I've got a bunch of other stuff imma work on first. Sorry to disappoint, friends. In the meanwhile I guess you can just go read A Matter of Provenance because it is quite silly.
All the best fics are.
Thought on the copyright thing. For centuries pretty much since the invention of the printing press made them necessary the standard for copyright protection was 20ish years. The extension of copyright into perpetuity was basically created by Disney in modern times.
Equestria has no Disney. Simplest explanation is that over 20 years has passed since the first book and the character is now public domain.
Bold of you to assume an essay on Don Quixote fanfic will make Aragón any less of a degenerate.
Also, Ahuizotl.

I mean, Equestria definitely has a Disney going by the comics, but those are only canon until proven otherwise.
It's darn near impossible to keep up with new episodes and avoid leaks, as I've been trying to do. It's getting where I can't even log into YouTube without seeing a spoilery screenshot.
Anyway, this episode made me want to write a Daring Do x Caballeron ship fic. Although, me being me, I want to throw in Somnambula as a matchmaker/meddler.
