A JD Review: MLP Season 9 Episode 19 - "Dragon Dropped" · 8:25pm Sep 7th, 2019

The one where Sparity is dead.

And the new ship, Spabby, is born.

Well, well, well... okay. Getting closer every day to the grand finale, and it's about time we finally cut off every loose end. Clip every branch, as a certain Captain America once said. This branch just happened to be a ship that should've been dealt with earlier, but better late than never. Yep, it's a final Sparity episode. Only this time, we see that Rarity is the one that can't seem to let Spike grow up and move on and make new friends. She wants to have her same little Spikey-Wikey by her side just like back in the day. Only... time changes us. Gotta move on. Gotta accept that friends can make new friends, but that they still won't forget about you.

I really did enjoy this one. It shows us that Spike isn't just subjugated to Rarity's beck and call. And yeah, Rarity was a little out of line here and there, but that was just her unable to accept that Spike was growing up. She learned her lesson and Gabby was still as awesome as ever.

Loved this one. 9/10. What were your thoughts?

I'm sorry, but I still support Sparity. I'm still a Sparity fan. This is a change that I don't want to see let go. I'm fine with SpikexEmber in fanfics. Also the moment with Twilight Sparkle on the fainting couch was funny!

Side note, your comment in the season 9 premiere about Celestia and Luna retiring, I agree with you. They should NEVER NEVER NEVER RETIRE!!!!

I'm sorry for asking but do you you think you can inform commenters and authors about my blogs? I'll appreciate it very much.

as someone who never liked the ship to begin with, its good to watch it sink... I think thats what happened anyway... most of the episode I spent listening to my uncle and grandma talk 30 times louder then the TV so I had to spend most of a 21 minute episode rewinding and pausing every few seconds cause some people are just rude as hell. Then near the end my uncle hit me on the head with his plate so now i have a headache because of him..

I didn't really see it as a Sparity ship torpedo or something.

But I still like this episode and enjoyed seeing Spike make a new "friend"

I use the friend loosely because of...

...yup.

You saying that Spike is no longer in love with Rarity or something else?

Because I honestly still see him being in love with her.

This was a fun episode.

The ending kinda leaves it a bit open ended on Spike’s feelings for Rarity. He is clearly not as obsessed with her as he was in earlier seasons, but he clearly still cares about her.

Personally, even though I think Spike seems cute with either Gabby or Rarity my personal favorite ship for him is still with Ember.

It's review time ! (I wonder why I never thought of using that sentence to start a review ...)

Well , first thing I would say about that episode is that it was very good ! An episode to conclude the story about those two was almost a necesity so that's no wonder they made one but the fact that it's acually good and original is the thing that surprised me the most ! Kudos to the writers !

Second , the fact that they took Gabby , a character that a lot of people (including me , I mean , she was fun !) liked and expected to return to semi-officially ship with spike (The only thing that makes it unable to say that they are more than friends is the fact that they don't say it in the episode) was a clever idea that only a few people would have guessed so again , Kudos to the writers !

Third , the fact that it's Rarity that wants to keep Spike for her and that Spike officialy turned the page and now only concider her has a friend and not a crush shows just how much the characters have grown since the first season : Rarity saw Spike almost like her personal servant at first but now , she sees him has one of her closest friend and has problems not having him by his side . And Spike , has said earlier , has turned the page and doesn't see Rarity has his crush but has one of his closest friend and nothing else (in yo faces , shippers ! I hate shipping anyway XD) .

Fourth , small point but the fact that one of the activities that Rarity and Spike did together was going to a convention about the Power Rangers Ponies a nice thing to point out that he still likes the same things . (Hard to point out what I am trying to say with this , sry...)

And now , the moment you all are waiting for (probably) : The Cuteness Ladder !

Well , for starters , Gabby was in the episode and since she is a cuteness bomb , my calculator almost overloaded but that's not it ! Some other various moments where also cute in there own ways (Rarity reciting her excuse speech and then saluting spike is both very fun and somewhat cute , especially since it happened two times) . And that is why this episode gets a 9/10 on my Cuteness Ladder !

Overall , this episode was very good and original (for me at least) and while it is not perfect (again , for me) , I will definitly watch it again (since my plans to watch the full season got scrapped after I saw that the end episodes where only in dutch , not for the worst now that I think about it) and so should you , if you liked it of course !
And for all the reasons I cited higher , I give this episode the totally normal note of 18/20 ! I wanted to give it 17 but I realised that it doesn't have any real flaw that I can cite and was a genuinely good episode so , bonus point I guess ?

Side note : now that I think about it , almost all episodes near and after the start of the second half are endings to some character arcs , which is both wonderful and absolutly terrifying ...

PS: Has said higher , my plans to watch the whole season in one go got scrapped , so don't worry about me spoilling even by mistake since I didn't watch em !

Yes it was good character development for Spike even if it felt like a fanfic plot in some moments.

But with finale leaks already polluting the internet, I totally forgot about this one.

It was going to happen eventually: We were waiting to see how this 'Sparity' ordeal was playing out, but it seems there might be a few clarifications. I will admit I had the plot all wrong, I figured Spike was strangely giving Rarity some space and she's wondering why he's suddenly uninterested in her. Turns out I was only partially right, Spike ended up maturing and started seeing other ladies while it turns out Rarity is the pony who is worried that he's growing up to fast and wants the old times back. Now this episode doesn't really jump the question as to whether Rarity is finally aware how much Spike truly liked her or not, as it seems she was mainly acknowledging how he was always there for her to handle her business ordeals. Still, of all the characters I expected Spike to start hanging with, I actually did not expect that cute Griffin (Although I'm starting to see some common traits).

Anyways, apart from a few nitpicks, I rather enjoyed this episode.

5117573 lol the princesses don't deserve to retire. :trollestia:

5117579 Well damn. Hope you're okay. :rainbowderp:

5117580 Oh, that was my favorite scene. :moustache:

5117589 I'm sure he still is, but just that he's trying to branch out and make new friends. It's more so Rarity finally realizing how much Spike means to her.

5117603 Yeah, I kinda like the Ember ship, too, but she seems a little too old for him. So is Rarity, but Ember's a dragon.

5117605 Oh, but the ships are so beautiful! You must love the ships! :rainbowkiss:

5117671 Staying as far away from the finale leaks as possible. Want to go into it blind.

5117765 Yeah, didn't expect Gabby either, but she's always a welcome treat!

Yup, all the more reason that shipping is not my in for a fanbase. One reason is simple: it's ridiculous and selfish.

At least in my opinion.

Nope JD. Not into shipping. Don't care, couldn't care less. Goodbye Sparity. End of story. No hard feelings.

I hope you have a say in it, because it's my opinion. If a like is enough, then it's enough.

Gotta admit, Gab is one fluffy chick (baby bird, not a gal) on talons and cat's butt.

Oh yeah, Gabby is a barrel of fun. The more I think about it: Gabby and Spike's little union does make sense. They both came from a race that typically didn't believe in Friendship, both were sore thumbs amongst their own group, but with ponies they were free to be whomever they want. Plus, that whole ordeal with the postage deal... Yeah, they definitely have that in common.

5117858
Yeah... Thanks for sharing that, Paulli.

I love this episode it shows the characters growing up, for 1 Spike shopped seeing Rarity as a crush but a very close friend, same with Rarity seeing Spike from a helpful assisstant to a very close friend, and seeing her jealous really shows how much she came to appreciate Spike, though she didn't show to be in love like how Spike used to be she still was a very close friend
2 Gabby...... I'm sorta half surprised they used her, I mean I'm not really a shipper but before this episode I liked some of the Spabby fanfics (this ship existed WAY before this episode), she and Spike technically sorta have a lot in common, though they very really acknowledge they are dating or anything they still showed to be very good friends, and writers used her to make Rarity jealous which to me actual was a perfect role for Gabby in this episode
3......... Idk why but the scene in post office with Rarity pushing huge box and Muffins Ditzy Doo (Derpy) (I made that my headcannon Derpy's full real name.... With her nickname still Derpy) closes the window was very funny to me for some reason, she was like nope I ain't dealing with that crap

Spabby has been one of my crack ships for ages, so nice to see it becoming canon.

A little late but very fun nonetheless !
