So, apparently Cozy Glow being tossed in prison and not redeemed is a drama thing · 6:29pm Aug 27th, 2019

I know I'm late to this.
But I only realized that after coming back.
I don't fucking get it.

I mean for one thing literally every redeemed villain has in common is remorse:
Luna, after her friendship blast, feels awful about what she did and later its revealed that she fuckin tortures herself because she feels that bad about it.
Sunset, after her friendship blast, also feels awful about what she did and works to actively make up for it.
Trixie seems genuinely apologetic
Discord has remorse when Fluttershy was sick of his shit and declared they weren't friends.
Gilda realizes she's been a bitch.
Starlight sees that she's destroying Equestria with her time fuckery and instantly realizes she's fucked up.
etc etc

Cozy never felt it.
Cozy Glow has every opportunity to feel it. Not only did she go to a school where she had to study literally everything that Twilight would have said to her to try to get her to reform but she was apparently a model student of all those lessons too.

Remorse for manipulating the student 6 into fighting when she sees them start? Nope.
Remorse for almost trapping the main six in hell for the rest of their lives? Nope.
Remorse or pushing Starlight into the magic vacuum and almost sending her and the student six into another dimension with the magic? HA, she planned that from the start.
The only one she wasn't there in person to see was the main 6 in big bad monster jail but that was so well planned out that she understood the implications.
She wasn't misguided, she wasn't unaware of her actions, void Tirek wasn't even manipulating her into doing it she just bounced ideas off of him.
Her response to why? "Lol power." No opening up about a deeper issue, no opportunity to get in to try to redeem her. Thus, punishment.
Kids are tossed in Juvie for far less than what she did.

Imagine a kid intentionally causing power outages across the entire country not feeling bad about it and people just shrugging and saying, "welp, its just a kid no punishment deserved."
Magic is apparently used for food preservation in Equestria, going by Pinkie. How many ponies would go hungry? Magic in medicine? It probably is used to some degree. How fucked would the weather be once pegasi lost their inherent magical abilities of weather control?

Is the whole thing of bitching about her not being redeemed just an extension of "think of the children" reflected back on a single child?
Children aren't innocent blank slates waiting for a good person to mold them. They can come out as bad seeds inherently, being pre-focused toward manipulation and harming others. There is no nature vs nurture, its both and sometimes nature plays a bigger role. Sucks.

Sociopaths don't exclusively come from abuse or some direct causal factor you can point to, they can come from normal loving homes. They might just be born and not made sometimes.

Yeah, yeah. Tell me more about how doctors don't diagnose kids with anti-social personality disorder because personalities change.
Sure they do change, but they're never fucking 180 shifts. If a kid tortures cats or constantly manipulates the people around them treating them like their toys, its a safe bet that they'll stay to some degree or another pretty questionable individuals at the least.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

The problem is not that she was punished, it's HOW she was punished. If a child stole something from you and the parent took away a privilege as a response you'd (presumably) be okay with it. If the parents beat them senseless with an extension cord you'd (presumably) NOT be okay with it.
Tartarus was too far-a juvenile prison would have been fine.

You are correct.
But.
If that child intentionally and knowingly knocked out the power for the entire country, the closest equivalent to sucking up the magic in the real world, I would be fine with the child being treated like a terrorist and locked away forever.

We'd best throw Starlight and Tempest in there with her hadn't we?

I'd have several questions if that scenario occurred.

1. How did the child obtain access to all this? Did someone help them?

2. Why was security so poor that a child figured out how to access it?

3. Does the child suffer from some sort of mental illness that affects their thoughts and behaviors? IE, Are they morally culpable?

Yep.
I was annoyed when they got off the hook with zero punishment. They should have been punished.
But it is an easier pill to swallow for them, cause they actually repented and felt remorse for their actions.

1. Easy cyber attack. Every kid has access to a computer these days.
2. US doesn't take cyber security seriously.
3.

intentionally and knowingly

Those points are...mildly terrifying. But that's off topic.

The problem, I think, is the show is not equipped to deal with these topics. A child villain is always going to evoke sympathy and these dark themes don't work on a show where there are very few non-redeemable characters and it has a light and soft vibe. As my ma would put it they done got too big for their britches. An episode where Rarity gets raped and has to deal with it would be fascinating, but not for this show. The world they've constructed isn't set up for these themes.

But for me the biggest problem with putting her in Tartarus was that Tartarus was said to be for dangerous creatures. It's like putting a bank robber in the zoo. It makes no sense.
