A JD Review: MLP Season 9 Episode 17 - "The Summer Sun Setback" · 11:29pm Aug 24th, 2019

The one where the season found its groove again.

This marks the beginning of the end... not counting the premiere.

OOOOKAAY! What an episode this turned out to be! Not only do we get a return of our favorite Legion of Doom, but we learn that this next Summer Sun Celebration is going to be the last one because Celestia and Luna are finally retiring. Twilight is finally taking control and ruling Equestria very, very soon. And what do you know, Twilight doesn't even have a freak-out session because of this. Character growth, people. Character growth (Discord even made a joke about it, so we can emphasize it at this point). Where the hell was THIS Twilight through the second half of the season?

As for the Legion of Doom, they find themselves searching the Canterlot Archives as a way to learn how to control Grogar's Bell without the goat even knowing. All the while spreading some chaos along the way. Turns out, they're very good at causing a split between the ponies. Perhaps that may come up in the finale? Only one way to find out!

Absolutely phenomenal episode! 10/10! What were your thoughts?

First :

This marks the beginning of the end... not counting the finale.

End Episodes titles spoilers : This sentence is VERY well thought since the end of the series will be named "the end of the end" or something like that , i hate spoiling myself but I am so curious that I my brain made me watch that article on the end episodes title ...

Second : "Doom Legion" makes me unable to imagine the 3 of them being anything but Doom demons , I should really stop playing this game and reading lore about it .

Third : REVIEW !

So this episode is , has always , out since a long time (Chinesse leak and all , I mean , those guys managed to leak ALL episodes until the 21th one !) so I don't remember everything about it . Don't kill me if I forget something please .

Now , I have to say that even if I don't remember everything , I can safelly say that I really enjoyed the episode , the fact that it throws at you the "oh , they are retiring for good now , DEAL WITH IT !" really makes you realise that ... We are in the Endgame now (sorry , I had to do it)

Also , it's nice to have the POV of both the ManeSix and the Doom Legion (still having trouble with that name) and even more to see them being developed has vilains and has persons with rational thoughts and all that jazz , Kudos for the writers for doing such a good job !

I would also add that even tho it was FREAKING DRASTIC , the total change in personality of Star-butt (Twilight for the ones not familiar) is enjoyable , and has I said in the last review , it really contrasts with the last episode where she went batchat crazy , guess she finally learnt her Lesson Zero ? Only took 9 seasons and a whole generation !

Now , I would like to continue but has always I am tired (it's 2AM in France right now , don't worry , when school starts again , I won't post that late) so let's get to the point everybody likes :

Cutness Ladder : Well this episode , like the majority of them doesn't countain a lot of cute moments but the simple fact that Cozy Glow is in it gets the ladder up , yes she is totally crazy but she is cute when she isn't having a mental breakdown over an ice cream ! There are also some noticable moments that I don't have in mind that where somewhat cute but I don't remember them enough to say what and where they where precisly . And those two facts make this episode get a generous 7/10 on my Cuteness Ladder !

Overall , this episode was very good , I will definitly watch it again from time to time and you can clearly tell that this episode was there to say "We are halfway throught people , you better accept some of the things that happen or you won't be ready for the End" . They really want us to be ready for it ... Let's just hope that all this Hype they are building won't be for nothing but I am confident since the Start of the season was very good and honestly , I wouldn't be too disapointed if the end is has good has the start of the season ! And for all those reasons , this episode gets a solid 19/20 ! It is not perfect , nothing is , but it is clearly an episode to be remembered !

PS: Nothing to do with the review but I wanted to ask something : Some days ago , while reading a Fic , I was thinking about starting my own FanFic on FIMfic , I don't have any idea on what to do it (Maybe Pacific Rim but that's stretching it) and I don't even think it would be good if I ever did one (by now , you should know that my self esteam is negative) . So this leads to me asking : Should I start writing a fic if I ever get an idea for one ? It could (and probably will) lead to nothing since I suck at imagining things but if I get an idea , should I write it ?

(Sorry for the wall of text , bad habit that I got from Youtube long ago , even the review itself is long AF)

watched it, and my first thoughts were "WHERE THE HELL WAS THIS TWILIGHT THE PAST EPISODE?" seriously, she REALLY grew the fuck up, and Im glad, cause last week was a terrible episode for her... as was the one before with what I said her being the reason the episode happened in the first place. But this was a Season 9 villains episode, so this of course had to be good, with what the last one said. Sombra shoulda stuck around, these guys are an AMAZING trio. And watching Twilight put everything back together without a freak out was amazing. Even Discord, in his own way, agreed!

This was a fantastic episode! Twilight no longer freaking out and the Legion of Doom getting the instructions for Grogar’s bell really set the stage for the finale.

That last line exchange Cozy and Chrysalis has me a bit concerned though. Last time the three pony tribes turned against each other, it brought about the Windigos.

After 2 episodes that were pretty mixed, we get an episode that’s very very good.

Twilight shows she has grown from these 9 seasons, our evil trio are still great and pretty competent with their schemes, and Discord is still an entertaining troll.

I will say seeing the synopsis of this episode I didn’t think it was going to be much, but seeing it I’m glad to be proven to be wrong. Way more interesting then the synopsis would make you think.

With the villains realizing how easy it is to get the ponies to fight each other I guess we know how the wendigoes show up in that season 9 trailer.

I doubt Grogar is fooled by the trio. He wouldn’t give up on his bell for a new magical artifact. I think he’s going to get the trio to attack Equestria to wear down the heroes and then swoop in to finish them while they are tired.

Though it is weird to have this episode where Twilight is very calm and ready to rule right after last episode wear she went bonkers.

Twilight: Why did you girls hire these problems with me.
RD: Twi you literally went nuts at a trivia game last week.

Character growth, foreshadowing, and our favorite band of idiots actually pulling something off. What's not to like?

Episode Seventeen, where have you been all this season!? For some time, we've seen nothing but Twilight Sparkle freak out and obsess over every single thing and if I were in her friends' place I wouldn't believe that she actually had the character development to finally be calm in the face on what could've been a night where anything and everything goes wrong (Leave it to Discord to throw in a joke about character development). But sure enough, it was her friends who learned that lesson when things were going wrong from right under their muzzles, not knowing of a certain trio's involvement, that not only was it wrong to hide the truth that they couldn't fix these issues but that it was wrong not to believe when their friend says they truly have changed. In a way, I am slowly starting to see why the princesses wanted Twilight Sparkle to be that leader knowing she just needed that chance to prove she is more than just the pony who freaks out or the pony obsessed with organization or the pony who wants to do things the way the princesses did. Sure the villains were successful in temporarily causing a rift amongst friends and sure they have the secret of how to control the bell, but the ponies still managed to make Celestia & Luna's final 'Summer Sun Celebration' a night worth remembering.

As for the villains in general, I still have some doubt that Grogar is that 'blissfully' unaware that these minions are hiding the bell from under his gaze. Sure he 'claims' that he found an alternative means to ensure power to take over Equestria, but I'd like to believe since he truly doesn't 'trust anyone' that he's only saying that just to give the trio some false sense of security that they truly are a step ahead of Grogar. Sure it's one thing to be ahead of 'every pony', but Grogar is NOT a pony... Is he? (Don't answer that)

Anyways, this was truly a heartfelt breath of fresh air we so desperately needed after some episodes that were rather... What's the nice way to say it? 'Questionable' at best. I really hope the show continues to be this strong during this second half of the season. Who knows? We may get a few surprises we didn't expect to see.

1. Oh no! It's the Legion of Doom! Looks like this is a job for The Earth's Mightiest Heroes! The Av-

Wait! Wrong franchise. Where's Supes when you need him.

2. Now Twi shows her inner Peter Parker within her and to celebrate this great character development within her...

"With great power, comes great responsibility"

3. How will you retcon Twilight becoming Ruler of Equestria being connected to the nightmare that is The Decimation five years ago?

4. So, Grogar wasn't fooled, reminds me of this line.

I know. I was disappointed not because you didn't find it. But because you found it. And you lied.

You're strong. Me.
You're generous. Me.
But I didn't teach you to lie. That's why you're so bad at it.

5110962 If you ever have the bug to write a fanfic, then go for it! That's how I started! :pinkiehappy:

5110981 Kinda wish we still had Sombra, too. His interactions with the other villains could've been really good. But yeah, great episode! :yay:

5110997 That must explain the Windigos we saw in the last trailer! :pinkiegasp:

5111039 Exactly! Grogar has to know that they're trying to deceive him. If he ended up betraying them, that would be a great twist! :moustache:

5111125 Phenomenal episode!

5111177 I want the rest of the season to stay this strong to the very end!

5111212 Season 9 doesn't really happen for Infinity Era. At least, it might... in a different way. :ajsmug:

5111235
Well , I kind of knew you would come up with that answer , thanks a lot anyway !

And btw , I can imagine both Grogar and the Doom Legion (still a weird name for those 3 ...) betraying each other at the same time :

"And now ! With my full power I shall kill you all !"

"Well , actually we knew and we where ready"

"So , that's a double betrayal ?"

"yeah ..."

(It sounded funnier in my head)

5111235
maybe? I still dont care for his new voice though.

It looked like there were windigoes in season finale trailer so maybe Legion of Doom did trick ponies again..... Also yeah I'm 100% sure Grogar knows his 'assisstants' or whatever are planning to betray him but he is prepared.... I mean couldn't he also been watching them through his globe or whatever the whole time as well.....
