    2023 Year in Review

2023. What a year. I keep getting this feeling... this thought that, "Okay, once I get through this, then I can settle down. I just need to make it to the weekend. I just need to finish this busy end-of-the-month. Once I get through this quarter. Oh, it's 2024 already..? Fuck."

I requested a story about how Twilight's Ponyville friends celebrated the holiday the year before she arrived.

My Weekend with B_25 · 9:09pm Jul 11th, 2019

This blog is a few days late coming with a busy week already. But here it is.

My weekend with B_25

After several cancellations and reschedules, this past weekend, B decided to come down from Canada to my place for a few days and nights. Blitz was supposed to join us, but sadly the timing of the trip had him in Germany. So Friday rolls around, and B is working instead of taking the day off. He gets out, and messages me.

Going to sleep. Gonna plan on leaving here at 1am.

Okay. that is until 11pm that same evening.

Still awake.

Needless to say, he was a little late getting going. Normally I wouldn't care. But I was very firm about him being punctual because after several sunny weekends, the Saturday he decided to travel was going to be rainy. Normally not a problem. But he was on a motorcycle. As long as he left by 1AM he would be able to beat the rain. It should only have been a 6-8 hour ride.

But since he left late, the rain caught up to him shortly after he crossed over into the US. He waited out the first band of rain under a highway overpass. And then the next rain band in a bus stop shelter. And rain or not, it was still one of the busiest travel weekends. That meant that the roads were not only wet, but also very busy. Two things you do not want on a motorcycle. And a trip that should have only taken 8 hours lasted nearly 20.

By the time B arrived, it was 1AM Sunday morning. I had already pulled out the couch bed and once he parked in my garage and unpacked, he pretty much went straight to sleep. I went to my bedroom and did the same.

The next morning, I woke up fairly early by habit. B woke up a while later after such a long trip. We were treated to wonderful breakfast courtesy of Mrs. Shakes: Hash browns, scrambled eggs, toast, and sausage. Had B arrived earlier the previous evening, we would have needed such a meal for the hangover we were planing to have by then.

We spent Sunday doing a bit of cooperative writing, and chatting and just hanging out. At least until noon. And then we started drinking in my bar, and getting ready for the live stream. We had a few ideas for what to do during the stream, as far as what to have on the screen. It turned out that B had never seen any of DWK's stuff. So I figured we could watch that and see his live reactions to it.

Well, if you watched THE STREAM, you know it didn't quite go that way. For not the least of the reasons, we had been pre-gaming pretty hard by the time we hit 'play'.

Oh sure, DWK was on the screen but we were barely paying attention to it. Mostly we were talking with the chat room, giving each other shit, and generally talking about whatever. Mrs. Shakes made us some baller chicken dip, and pizza. To be honest, I barely remember most of it. All I know is at the end, I got way WAY too high, and needed to lay down. So that was the end of the stream.

After the stream was over, my wife and I had our girlfriend come over and meet B. I was still buzzing pretty hard but we did play Unstable Unicorns for a bit. By then it was getting pretty late. (At least for me. B might be a vampire or something.)

Monday, we spent more time outdoors. Down the street from my house is the lake with a beach. So we went there for a bit. Afterwards, we went to Best Buy, because B insisted that I have a mechanical keyboard. But Best Buy didn't have one. And as much as it appealed to me, I didn't want to order one online without trying it first.

In the same plaza was a Barnes & Nobel. So of course we went there. I picked up a couple books that had been on my 'must buy' list for far too long. I got B started on the Dresden Files. So he got Storm Front, by Jim Butcher. I recommend it to everyone.

While we were out, we hit up the liquor store for more booze and a couple cigars. And we gathered up as much flammable stuff as we could and piled it up in the fire pit in my back yard. Once the fire was going, we set up a couple of chairs, cracked some beers, and lit up our smokes. While it was still light out, Mrs. Shakes decided it would be a good time to get a picture of us, since neither of us had taken any the entire time. B leaned over and threw his arm around my shoulders.

Today was a good day.

We smoked and drank and talked by the fire late into the night until there was nothing left to burn.

Tuesday got a late start. We spent most of it on the couch. B introduced me to Trailer Park Boys, on Netflix. I had been aware of the show, but I had never watched it before. B made a point of telling me how it was such a big deal in Canada. So we binge-watched that all day and talked more. For dinner, I made pancakes with beer instead of water.

And around 2AM Wednesday morning, B left to ride back to Canada.

To be honest, I wasn't exactly sure about 'what' exactly we were going to do once he got here. And I wasn't disappointed with how we spent our time. If only for the fact that we really had so little of it. I would say that the live-stream was the highlight. But really, it was all the little moments. The quiet hours of sitting across from one another clicking away on our keyboards. The deep conversations while doing nothing. Sitting by the crackling fire with a cigar and just enjoying the moment itself.

A lot of people who know B online, know that he has a sort of bombastic, abrasive brand of comedy that can get a bit grating if you are new to it. And when I invited him over, I wasn't sure if it was just going to be two type-A personalities butting heads for three days until one of us killed the other. But that wasn't the case at all. Much to both our surprises, we were each just... pretty chill. It just goes to show how different people can be on and offline. Sure, we give each other shit online and in our streams. But we know it's all in good fun, with good people.

Mrs. Shakes and our girlfriend both agree. B is good people. And we'd have him as a guest again any time.

Well that's just downright adorable.

And now the wait for BC just got worse.

People having fun is... Fun?

All's well that ends well :raritywink:

Sounds like y'all had a grand ol' time. I'm sorry I missed the stream.

The only typewriter you need. Azio Retro Classic. I own one. Loud as all hell. Perfect for smash typists. Requires actual typing skill to use well.

Do a little Googling and see if it is right for you. They cost about 200 bucks or so. Heavy. Like, several pounds of steel and leather. Bash in a zombie's brain with one and then go back to typing. Did I mention that they are bloody loud? But they are beautiful and functional.

I learned to type on actual typewriters in school, and I destroy keyboards because I am a smash typist. I can kill a keyboard in a year. This thing hasn't worn down at all.

There is nothing better to type on, in my opinion.

5087551
Because we can't crack one of those right now. Gotta wait another 3 weeks.

5087556
I'll bear that in mind.

5087561
We gotta make sure this BC goes out with a bang. The party to end all parties.

5087543
Yeah, I've started watching it but it doesn't compare to watching live and getting to chat with everyone.

I learned to type on actual typewriters in school,...

Me too! I had to take a "Typing and Office Skills" class before I could take "Intro to Data Processing and Programming". Once I got into IDPP we had these marvellous IBM Model M keyboards to bash away on. Solid as a tank and there's one manufacturer still making them; Unicomp.

That sounds like a very fun weekend.
I feel so happy for you and your friends.

Thanks to MLP, good friendships have been possible ^_^

Nice. I had a weekend with my bros a few months ago. It was awesome. Something I'm a little confused about, however, is the girlfriend. Who is she? Are you in a polygamous relationship or something?

Mrs. Shakes and our girlfriend both agree. B is good people. And we'd have him as a guest again any time.

5087671
Polyamorous, yes. I'm a straight male with two bisexual female partners. A three-way relationship. The colloquial term is a throuple, as opposed to a couple.

We actually wanted to run an Ask A Throuple panel at BronyCon, similar to the Ask A Couple panel at BronyCon'16 with Spike and Rarity. But sadly, it wasn't selected. We would have been cosplaying as Shining, Cadance, and Chrysalis.

All three of us will still be at BronyCon'19.

5087748:pinkiegasp:Damn, and here I was thinking that kind of thing only happens in fanfiction. How'd you get them to agree to the arrangement?

5087785

How'd you get them to agree to the arrangement?

Real talk though, it wasn't something I had to 'get anyone to agree to'. It was something that all parties were interested in. Mrs. Shakes enjoys the company of a woman as much as a man, and she is grateful for the extra help with my *ahem* exceptionally-high libido.

We talked about it and agreed that neither one of us wanted to cheat on the other, but we still wanted these extra needs met. That was when Mrs. Shakes and I agreed to bring a third person to our relationship. Everything was openly discussed so there was no secrets, or lying, or betrayal of trust. That, more than unfaithful sex, is why cheating kills relationships. If you don't have trust, you don't have a relationship.

Our girlfriend enjoys a passionate man that can keep up with her drive, as well as the intimacy that only comes from another female partner. Plus we are are just very good friends with many shared interests. Even during 'particular weeks' when sex would be- eh... messy, we still just enjoy our friendship hanging out doing platonic activities like watching TV, playing tabletop games, and going to the mall.

The key is communication. A polyamorous relationship is rewarding but comes with its own challenges. And it is certainly not for everyone.

5087800
Aggressively this.

5087912
I would encourage that. Poly comes in all shapes and sizes, but there are some very key elements like trust, honesty, and communication that everyone, including monogamous people, could stand to learn. Also, there are some poly misconceptions that would be good to clear up on this site.
I've gotten some... weird statements.

5087912
From our discussion of it during the bonfire you were able to illuminate a lot on the subject, give answers to strange questions, and ultimately, render the very idea of it relatable even to someone who wouldn't think to do it. So yeah. Write that blog post man. It'll be a good one.
