    Twilight the 没用

Yesterday, a fellow named SoothingBell asked if they could translate Twilight the Useless to Chinese, and no way was I gonna say no. :D

And they turned it around in 24 hours, amazing!

    Idle musing

so-called because that's what led me to the realization

What is so compelling about the idea of "warrior woman runs afoul of a wizard and is flung centuries into the future" that I made it happen twice?

...And with slightly more musing, I also realize, in a roundabout way, it was with the same wizard. >_> Huh.

Fic recs, March 8th: Top Ten of 2023!

Whaaaaat, two review blogs in a row?

Well hell yes, because I have done much better with the top ten this year and I am inordinately pleased with myself! :3 here's the explanation of the setup, for all that it has never adequately explained what's going on to like, literally anyone:

Does anyone care about Fallout: Equestria anymore? · 10:50pm Jul 8th, 2019

Spoilers, I'm reading Duck and Cover right now, and as always happens when I get balls-deep back into the 'verse, I start thinking about my own planned contributions to it. Well, except that D&C is such good satire, I'm kind of regretting having dropping the hundred or so bucks for that one piece of cover art back in the day. c.c;

Point is, we're in season nine, the show's coming to a close, and what are people even reading right now? The only reason I'm asking this -- because I'm sure someone's going to think, "Just write what you want to!" -- is that FoE stories naturally take a lot more effort than most of the things I write. And I've been ready and unwilling to write them for so long... has the audience dried up? I know there are still fans out there, but I don't want to spent all that time and work just so a handful of people can go, "Oh, neat."

I mean, I'll probably still write the parody, because hundred dollar cover art commission. >.< But it may very well not be worth it. And that would be a shame.

I still see new spin offs of it being made, old spin offs being updated, readings being done, people trying to animate it, and the game is still being updated. So yes, I would assume so.

FoE: Dead Tree has gotten so popular that it's been put into legitimate book form and has been legally authorized for full distribution and sale rights from hasbro

I do! And good to see you're enjoying Duck and Cover, it really is a fantastic story and the story behind the update schedule is impressive. The sequel, Make Love Not War, is even better and benefits greatly from the author taking a bit more time in between chapters.

But yes, I would absolutely read an FO:E parodyfic from ya!

I'm reading a lot of SoL, HiE and PoE. (em-oh-yoo-ess-ee). Admiral Bisquit, Celefin... that sort. Never read any FO:E except the original.

I care in general but am not a particularly active reader at the moment.

Short Answer: No.
Long Answer: Never have.

Yeah, and I still don't get why the author went to all that trouble and expenditure...

*record scratch*

Hasbro has acknowledged FoE??!?!

It's not that I don't care. It's just that I know that the bombs fell, all of our beloved ponies died out (Mane 6, Princess Celestia and Luna). I am not really sure if would be able to care for an OC in the wasteland if I don't find them interesting.

I’d have to have read the author first before committing to an FoE fic. So in your case... bring it.

The problem with FO:E stories is that they take so much effort to write that they have an even worse completion average than other fics... which already only half of stories published are ever completed. For that reason I don't even bother starting FO:E stories anymore until they're done.

I certainly won't publish anything until it's at least fully written.

5086030
Wait, really? Wonder if the author gets any money for it?

Last FO:E I read was The Chrysalis, although Wanderer D is doing Fallout again in TSC.
I wouldn't say dead and I'll still check out any interesting ones but it has been milked pretty hard.

I still like FO:E, so I'd be game.

(I'm just picky on what stories I read from that verse. The original is still one of my favorite crossover fanfics of all time despite the amount of people bitching about it. Hell, it actually made me jump into the Fallout universe, which is what a good crossover should do.)

I admit, I never cared about it.
I feel like MLP itself is coming to a close, so I dunno if 100 bucks on that is worth it.

It happened like five years ago, it's too late. D:

Are there any FO:E stories where they just install a bunch of dumb mods? Those are the ones I want to read.

Not that I know.

I plan on having a character who's exploiting console commands, though...

I'll always care. It was the first ponyfic I loved.

I dunno'... Since a bunch of what I do is stupid shout outs to very limited audiences, I'd say go for it. Make if the most entertaining thing you can for those few, and ride their happiness to your own!

5086172
Even better! :pinkiehappy:

I care, especially if there's a chance the story will be completed, which is the main problem with FOE fics.
Still collecting FOE art, animations and audio-efforts.

5086056
Yeah... [citation needed] :duck:

Never have, never will.

You're going to need to elaborate, given that Hasbro doesn't own one of the properties involved and thus cannot actually authorize anything to do with it.

Yep, I found this site due to various FOE’s, after finishing all the largest ones I could find, I’ve moved to smaller (relatively) ones or more modern ones like Morality of Property, Change, Frozen Skies, Homelands, Speak, Wasteland Economics, Hooves of Fate among others, but as people have said the pace of them is slowing down a bit, and I now wait and see for consistent or sizeable updates to newer FOE’s so I know they haven’t been abandoned before I start them- I would absolutely read your take on FOE, or DND, if you were to publish one.

I really enjoyed Duck and Cover for the humour and the interesting UK setting, something I had not seen in FOE before, and the sequel is also still pretty good but I miss the rocketing pace and setting when it moved to a more US / Equestrian location.

I think it's more that the author got it legally acknowledged as parody, and thus able to be sold or something.

You’re not that alone ^^’
My case has more to do with no home WiFi (for stupid reason I regret >.>) but I’ve also noticed a massive slow down in chapters of my favorite stories being updated

The only legal recognition would require winning a court case, and I suspect that would make more news than an offhand comment in fimfic thread, so I'm still asking for more details.

Especially since it would involve winning a court case involving both Hasbro and Bethesda, companies known to be extremely protective of their IP and in possession of effectively unlimited funds to drag out legal action.

(Goddamn being in 3 FoE groups makes finding shit hard...)

This contains all the info I have on the topic. This is the thread to which I refer in my comment on that thread.

5086287

Yeah, and I can't find any other references on the internet to what would be a pretty groundbreaking legal precedent, so I'm inclined to be skeptical.

The only thing I -can- find is the version on the author's website with what, by the layout and lack of UPC is most likely a vanity press cover, and which uses Bethesda's trade dress for the Fallout name without any attempt at parody or modification. Call me suspicious, but that doesn't strike me as kosher.

Edit: It's also bugging me that her description bears zero resemblance to how parody legally works in the US at all, and a bit of googling hasn't come up with anything to suggest it works that way anywhere -else- either...

Oof. I hadn't considered that...

Frankly, I'd like for this to be a lie, because I've felt like this was a slap in the face of fanfiction everywhere. Like, this is gonna make it harder for everyone, not just the people trying to sell books at Bronycon this year.

5086294

At the very least it seems like if things actually worked that way, Disney would be lobbying hard against it given their whole strategy of 'do a take on a public domain property then sue anyone doing anything remotely similar into the ground' as a business model.

Edit: it won't stop bugging me. Why would you need to serve the companies by mail when presumably their legal teams are already present in the courtroom?

Absolutely Everything and Ministry of Image both have highly active communities so .. yeah, obviously people still care about Fallout: Equestria and are willing to spend exorbitant amounts of dollars for muh merch. Can't say much about new stories, tho. Speak is fairly popular rn, and so is Homelands.

I just finished one, and have 2 in my que. Though I am going to read some humor for a bit to off set the foe.
