Part way through S9 and thoughts on writing... · 12:24am Jul 5th, 2019
If I had to sum up most of season 9 so far it would be... Satisfying. With only a little exception I feel like it has been a very solid season, wrapping things up in as best a way as they can, having some fun along the way, making *very* hard topics as light as they can, I am actually really amazed at what a fine job they have done of threading that needle.
There have also been some fun little things coming from EQG and Rainbow Roadtrip... while really just an two part episode, was very good. I wish the Movie had been as solid. Both could have been vastly more epic/exciting/challenging/rewarding, but for coming from a different animation studio, it actually felt much much closer to our wonderful little show, and I liked it.
My little thought on writing is inspired by all these great things... Like the show, writing in general can be looked at a few ways creatively.Start with not much to go on, some good premises, characters, the start of a world, and build, go crazy... Or start with a wealth of material, a far more enriched world, characters with lots of (sometimes conflicted) history, lore to spare and thread a needle into that beautiful patchwork and make something your own...
What I mean to say is, sometimes it is easier to write much less and expand on it, like a simple writing prompt or the old saying a picture's worth a thousand words. It is easier at times to write when we only had a season or two of MLP, it is easier to write still if we simply select a point we want to jump off at and go from there.
All the same, it is sometimes easier to write something that adds to that world and builds on it when we know so much more about it already... I can write a vastly more grounded StarTrix ship now than I could a few seasons ago and so on. Creating an AU that plays with and plays homage to all of this amazing content is also more fun.
At any rate, thats my thoughts for today,
