Equestria Girls Blog 6: “Spring Breakdown” · 3:12pm Jun 25th, 2019

Okay, I know that this post is over a month overdue, going by the YouTube release dates, but between studying and an upcoming move, I just haven’t found the time to write about it. I did like it more than “Rollercoaster of Friendship,” but ugh! :facehoof: I still had a pretty hard time enjoying it. I mean, I spent most of the special being SUPER ANNOYED with Rainbow Dash. :ajbemused: I mean, she’s at the bottom of my best main cast list as both a human and a pony, but this special just pushed how well I can tolerate her antics.

One, she had no chill whatsoever. I mean, I get that her life took a turn for the cool when she got her powers, and she absolutely loves it, but there’s nothing wrong with wanting to take a break from it. Maybe I’m just being hard on her because I was under more stress than usual when I saw the special. :ajsleepy: You know, a huge test was coming up and all. On top of that, I’m a med student, so my life has been kinda crazy for the last two years. :applejackconfused: Also, the last time I had a spring break was in 2018, and I had to spend half of it studying because I had either a midterm or a final, I don’t really remember, scheduled the next week. Yeah. :ajbemused: Look, I don’t hate my life; I just know how it feels to want a break from it. If I had been chained to someone as no-chill about studying as Dash was about fighting monsters during my test prep time, I would have punched this person in the face before breaking down crying from the additional stress. :ajbemused:

Two, the difference between superheroes and Rainbow Dash is that superheroes fight evil bad guys out of necessity. Dash just wants to fight bad guys because she’s an attention-seeking, braggart adrenaline junkie. Yes, I know that superheroes and adrenaline junkies aren’t mutually exclusive, but let’s just say that Rainbow Dash could use a few lessons from Spider-man on responsibility.

Speaking of responsibility, my gosh! :facehoof: I know that Sci-Twi wanted a break from the craziness and that Dash felt bad about getting in the way of that break, but you don’t just randomly ditch your friends in the middle of an emergency situation without telling them, especially if the emergency situation is taking place on a stranded boat in the middle of the ocean in the middle of a storm. Good gravy, if you’re going to chill, DO IT RESPONSIBLY! :flutterrage:

I’ll admit that the plot doesn’t feel as forced as “Rollercoaster of Friendship,” and the lack of an actual antagonist was a nice change. I just wish that the plot hadn’t been so dependent on Rainbow Dash (and later, Sci-Twi and Sunset) making irresponsible decisions.:ajbemused: I mean, I know they’re teenagers in this universe, and teens are notorious for being irresponsible, but gosh, I wanted to jump into the screen and give those three, mostly Rainbow Dash, a good tongue lashing. Man, I MUST be slowly turning into my parents if my tolerance for irresponsible behavior has gone down. :twilightsheepish:

If anything this just proves that no one wants to be responsible for anything these days and that is not good. The world is forgetting that moral responsibility is important for a functioning society and this special is a very poor example of that as it will encourage young children that it's okay to be irresponsible when it's not and that we need to owe up to our mistakes even if we don't want to. When you mention Spiderman's most powerful quote I've notice that it's missing in the new Marvel movies and I don't know if that's a copyright thing or that the producers refuse to use for what strange reason, I don't know. And to me that further proves that we're telling kids to behave poorly when no we shouldn't. In our case we're getting wiser on what is being taught to the younger generation and that we need to act responsibly on their behalf.

Yeah, I realized I just went on a rant there and I apologize for that. :twilightsheepish:

I can tell you why we haven't heard the "Great power comes great responsibility" line., its because at this point the phrase and its meaning is ubiquitous in the superhero genre. Also a lot of the people who see these film have been down that road back in 2002, and it has been engrained in our culture sense then it kind of goes without saying when you have Spider-Man in a film.

It showed up a little bit in Into the Spider-verse, but that was made and distributed by Sony. Also, I have seen Spider-man: Homecoming, and even though that quote was strangely absent from the movie, Peter's whole arc does involve him learning what it means to be responsible. He also does start taking the lesson to heart after getting one tongue lashing each from Tony Stark and Aunt May. Yeah, that quote's absence could just be a copyright thing.

Ah, okay that makes sense, I've only seen clips from Homecoming so I don't exactly get to see that growth that Peter goes through. Hopefully though that we get more movies like this to help the next generation.

Yeah, Rainbow can be especially annoying at times, especially when she was looking for problems when there weren’t any. Though she was right about how the girls were heroes, that doesn’t mean she needs to go looking for danger.

I think most people don’t enjoy this special because the advertising made it look like the main plot was the girls going to Equestria, when in the actual special that was actually only a few minutes.

By the way, have you seen the I’m on a Yacht music video? I honestly don’t know if it is canon to this special, or where it would fit if it was.

I saw "I'm on a Yacht." It was the music video that reminded me that I hated rap. :ajbemused:
