A JD Review: MLP Season 9 Episode 13 - "Between Dark and Dawn" · 8:03pm Jun 22nd, 2019

The one where Celestia and Luna become characters.

We got more plot than expected.

OOOOOOOOOOOkay. This was a fun one before the hiatus apparently (this is news to me). What a great way to return to the two sisters after their official "retirement" from ruling Equestria. Turns out, they became friendly neighborhood vigilantes and bother everypony with their menial setbacks and attempting to help save the day. They're the heroes we don't need, but definitely the ones we deserve. With everypony annoyed with them finally helping, Twilight and the gang suggest they all take a vacation. And they do... while leaving Twilight and the others in charge of Equestria...

Good God, what could wrong?

This episode was a blast! Aside from Fancy Pants not stating early on that the princesses relied on the Canterlot Gala Committee to set up parties and events (which would have caused the entire conflict with Twilight and the gang to not even happen), this episode was great. Every scene with Celestia and Luna having a sister vacation is pure gold. Twilight and the gang have some pretty funny antics, but I would have rather much preferred to see more of the sisters. Even the lesson between Celestia and Luna at the end was heartfelt.

Yeah, so, really enjoyed this one. 9/10. What were your thoughts (did you like the plot, too... if you know what I mean ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) )?

An episode truly deserving of the Royal Sisters!

So we’re the princesses stalking the ponies to wait and stop some disaster happening?

Really fun episode, but I will admit that I liked a Royal problem a little better. Twilight’s side of the episode wasn’t as fun as the princesses, but I do appreciate that it gave the Canterlot ponies a role in Canterlot besides being snobs. They actually do have a role to play in the city.

Though if they run the galas than it must have really hurt to have Celestia say that the galas were bring and having the mane six and Discord destroy the gala.

for once, I 100% agree here. this was another great episode(two outta 13 is bad though for Season 9)
only thing I have to add is didnt we kinda do this sorta thing with the sisters already when Starlight switched their cutie marks?

This was a pretty good episode indeed, we also got a Cameo from Capper XD

One of those vacations in their retirement would be planting potatoes on a garden and cooking soup in a straw house... because they're not the Pony Without Fear... next thing you know, they'll hide in their secret bunker, and...

In a way, this was more of a Royal Sisters episode than a Mane Six episode because without that plot device of the Mane Six running the kingdom in their absence it wouldn't have been a big loss. We get to see the princesses show their desire to have more excitement outside of sitting on their thrones all day. But then we start to see their differences later on, one sister preferring some exciting adventures and the other just wanting to enjoy the more 'mundane' aspects of life to at least relax. I'll have more to say in regards to the episode overall in my next review, but for now in spite of how weird some moments were I still had fun watching this episode. I look forward to what the second half of the season has in store.

5078177 A Royal Problem was better, honestly.

5078245 Yep, but that episode was a little better than this one.

5078585 This was quite a weird episode, wasn't it? :derpytongue2:

For me, it was 'weird' in a 'good' way. If the princesses had remained their prim and proper selves throughout the whole episode, I don't know if it would be enjoyable or boring. So in a way, I see why the writers wanted a 'different' direction with the princesses.
