So, how many fics do we think this episode is going to spawn, that are basically various characters ranting/yelling/lecturing to Scootaloo's parents that they are negligent and horrible?

It was a good episode with a good moral, I just wish they had used a more creative story to tell it.

5074579
Who knows? My dad's rarely around thanks to his job.

It’s relieving to know that Scootaloo wasn’t an orphan all this time: and boy was it a lot of time:twilightoops:.

Ironically though I hope this was the last CMC-centered episode because since we’re pretty much already at the halfway mark to the series finale, there really isn’t much room left for filler episodes by recurring-class characters. Also that the trio have pretty much fulfilled their purpose already by getting their cutie marks and figuring out their destiny.

It’s about time now that the writers should focus more on preparing Twilight, her friends, the princesses, and even the Pillars for one final showdown against Grogar and his minions.

If there have to be a few more filler episodes, they should be focused on tying up loose ends like with Celestia and Luna’s origins, and maybe even the fate of Pear Butter and Bright Mac. Indeed it has been implied that they died, but it was never hinted how. Sure it’s a dark theme to tackle for a kids show, but even young children need to learn that they might lose their parents earlier than expected one day so they should cherish every moment with them. You’ll never know if you’ll even get the chance to say goodbye, or even get another one:ajsleepy::applecry:.

Of course I could be wrong about my theory of this being the last CMC episode since they’re still beloved characters and indeed have an important role in the show. I just figured that Michelle, Claire, and Maddy would by now be focusing their attention on new acting gigs, school, or any other endeavor they might have in mind after FiM concludes. Who knows: all three of them might have new characters to voice for G5:moustache:.

Welp, there's a lot of headcanons that just got shot down...

Oh well. Great Episode!

A parent's first duty is to their children, not their work. Bad parents:twilightangry2:

5074579 I think those are pretty much inevitable.

As an epica fan, last crusade has a different meaning to me.

How couldn’t we approve of her having lesbian aunts? Watching GSRM rights grow and grow each and every month just... it makes me smile.

I have no idea how supporting LGBT rights gets me four downvotes. I’m now incredibly confused.

5074588
Their jobs simply required them to travel farther outside of Equestria resulting in them being unable to interact with her as much as they’d like to. Even real-life parents have to go through that sort of thing from time to time.

5074596
I realize this, but to me the situation they presented here seemed very selfish.

5074585
This was EXACTLY why I didn't want to finish my Hearth's Warming eve story; I had a feeling the writers were going to finally introduce Scootaloo's parents and her two aunts. Though I was partial to the idea that Scootaloo was an orphan and would get adopted by Bo and Windy to be Rainbow dash's little sister at the end of this season. Still, a very touching episode.

Okay, who let those two talk to each other?

I'm most excited for this episode to see the death of certain headcanons.

5074602
Princess Cadence: "Hehehehehe~"

5074603
Considering most of us have known of this for about 1-2 weeks....yeah the headcanons that have been destroyed are a large amount of laughable!

5074584

filler episodes

ffs.

5074584
Madeleine Peters already has quite a VA career under her belt, Claire Corlett has been in other stuff (such as the Bob the Builder reboot), and Michelle Creber's been pretty busy too. Still, I imagine the roles of Scootaloo, Sweetie Belle and Apple Bloom are ones for which they will be fondly remembered.

Scootaloo’s parents are probably used to being able to curse, drink and screw anytime of the day. Snap Shutter is Australian, so you know he wants at least one of those. Then one day Mane told him how that would have to be managed from now on with Scootaloo around, and Snap was just: “....Dangit.”

First Impression: I like this episode. 7/10

The wait to see Scootaloo's parents was well worth it. They seem like a nice couple, and they certainly explain a few things about Scootaloo, like where her thrill for dangerous activities comes from. I really like how they understood that like their jobs, Scootaloo's is important too and that she needs to remain with her friends that are also her team.

The cameos from everypony that the CMC helped was a delight. Gabby and Terramar seem to have hit it off pretty well, just like another griffon and hippogriff we know. The different creature friendships are spreading! :pinkiehappy:

5074584

If there have to be a few more filler episodes, they should be focused on tying up loose ends like with Celestia and Luna’s origins

This isn't a loose end, because it doesn't matter. Also, we know basically what it was: Star Swirl found them shortly after the founding of Equestria, trained them in magic, they got their cutie marks when the managed the celestial bodies for the first time, etc. That's all in Horse Play, at least as far as Celestia's concerned, and we can presume Luna's script is similar. There's no mystery here, and it's not terribly interesting.

and maybe even the fate of Pear Butter and Bright Mac.

They dead. Who cares how? Also, it doesn't matter.

Y'know what does matter? Giving the extended cast each their own episode and neglecting buildup to the finale. Just like FiM has always done.

5074579 Because nothing says negligent like having trusted family members and authority figures watch their daughter from time to time to make sure she's okay. At least they have a justification for being away, why are Sweetie Belle's parents always dumping her onto Rarity just to go on vacation?

And while many headcanons were destroyed today, I can safely say mine weren't. Because I always knew Scoot wasn't an orphan. :scootangel:

This episode was quite beautiful. It's nice to see Scootaloo's family after all this time, and the explanation of why her parents weren't around does make sense. This is another time where the moral makes as much sense for adults as it does for kids. You shouldn't force your children to do what you think is best just because you're the parent. Ask them how they feel. I know you can't really apply that moral to every situation, but it's still important to understand that. And I applaud the writers for bringing this to light. :moustache:

Honestly, I wasn't a huge fan of this episode, mainly because they kinda screwed up the moral IMO. Realizing that yes, sometimes change (as in Scoots moving) does happen, but at the same time, them planning it without talking to her first was also kind of a dick move.
Happy they finally introduced the aunts and the fact that she has parents at all, though, so it's not that I don't like it.
I say 6/10, but that's just me.

On a sidenote: now that we've seen Terramar and Gabby not only in a scene together, but interacting in a friendly manner, can we expect some romance stories between the two?

Aw man, I fully expected Rainbow Dash to adopt Scoots at the end there.

5074626
People dont care.

Especially fandoms once they've set their minds to something.

5074594
I think that alone is funny as is. She has lesbian aunts, and her biggest role model is a Rainbow.

If this episode has demonstrated one thing it's that the new style of writing MLP does have some merit when the writers respect the characters enough to portray them accurately instead of using them as mouthpieces for their agenda, even in episodes which feature an openly homosexual couple. 10/10

A VERY solid episode! End of an era. So sad to see these three amazing fillies have their last hurrah, but obviously that's only in the show. Who said WE fanfic writers had to stop writing for them? :unsuresweetie: Scootaloos parents were awesome! I see where Scootaloo gets her spunk from. Despite all this though, there is one more thing. Are they going to explain why Scootaloo can't fly or are we left to always wonder? That's like the ONLY missing puzzle piece to her character left at this point.
I know it's probably just me but didn't her lesbian aunts feel a little forced to anyone? I don't know. I mean there are CLEARLY more mares in this world so i'm guessing they can't catch EVERY stallion out there cause they'll run out LOL :rainbowlaugh: At least THAT part makes since to me.

Overall, very wonderful episode with a great moral.

5074632 Probably. I mean, it's pretty much a blank slate for how they might connect. Might even be like another GallusStream sort of thing.

I liked the episode and how the parents were based off Steve and Terrie Irwin now that was unexpected

I heard something in the distance... Like thousands of headcannons screaming and burning...

Scootallo has some negligent parents.

5074579
Sadly, I could see more than a few spawning, considering there were fics in the past that had Twi’s parents being utter asses to Twi just to put Celestia over as a better parent to her.

Halira #37 · Jun 15th, 2019 · · 2 ·

Sweetie Belle's parents. "We're leaving her with you for the weekend."---- never seen again except for one holiday. She is seen effectively living full time with Rarity.

Diamond Tiara's mother.

Applejack, Big Mac, and Applebloom wish they even had parents.

I think that Scootaloo's parents at least being clear what they are doing and having planned out guardians for Scootaloo puts them above Sweetie Belle's parents who can't even bother to be honest that they are dumping her on Rarity so they can go off and have fun. It isn't even work, it's just fun for them.

Scootaloo's parents are miles better than Diamond Tiara's mother.

Applejack and siblings would happily take having parents that were away but we're at least out there somewhere.

Scootaloo has worst parents ever is only said by those not paying attention to the show. Out of the CMC she's the best off in terms of parents.

5074625
Was genuinely about to upvote a post of yours for once but of course as I get further through you just drop the ball.

It goes without saying, but do Scootaloo's parents remind anyone of Arnold's parents from Hey Arnold?

I am kinda happy that the orphan Scootaloo headcanon has finally been destroyed after all these years, and this is coming from someone who accepted it himself.

Not to mention Scoot's lesbian aunts and all the folks the CMC helped over the years. This was a really good wrap-up episode for them (Unless there's gonna be another in the latter half of Season 9.).

5074626
Although what DOES say negligent is Scootaloo's mom explicitly saying that her passion for her job is more important than watching her still very young daughter grow up. This was a miserably written episode with an extremely warped moral, if it even had one besides just congratulating the CMC for existing.

5074669 She not only promised to stay in touch but also come back and visit. And as others have pointed out, she is leagues above parents like Spoiled Rich or Cookie Crumbles who either treat their child poorly or just unload said child onto others because they can.

I'm disappointed. I thought that the show was using "Parental Glideance" as a way to resolve Scootaloo's seeming orphan status. The episode introduced a married couple whose only child had already moved out. Bow Hothoof and Windy Whistles already got along great with Scootaloo thanks to their shared fanaticism of Rainbow Dash. Given the way they were cheering her on at the end of that episode, I was sure that they were going to adopt Scootaloo. Not only would that give Scootaloo a home, it would officially make Rainbow Dash her sister. It was so perfect, I thought that had to be the show's intention!

Plus, there was the following exchange from that episode:

Scootaloo: You know, some ponies would dream of having parents like that.
Rainbow Dash: Yeah, right! Name one!
Scootaloo: Me. Growing up, I never thought I'd be the best at anything, because nopony ever told me.

Doesn't that sound like the writers were dancing around the fact that Scootaloo was an orphan?

Now, while it still fits that Scootaloo's parents never told her that she'd be the best at anything (because as this episode demonstrated, they are terrible at knowing anything about their daughter's life), this means that whoever had been taking care of her for all of these years also never gave her any support. So now Scootaloo's aunts are jerks, too.

And ultimately, there was no reason for this episode to exist other than to make canon whether Scootaloo does or doesn't have living parents. Snap Shutter and Mane Allgood are never going to be seen again in the series. This episode didn't develop the CMCs as characters in any way whatsoever. And what was the moral supposed to be -- that everything will always work out perfectly for kids?

I would have respected the decision to give Scootaloo parents if the producers had had the guts to do anything with it. It's the final season -- they could have written Scootaloo out of the show. Teach the audience that while it sucks when your friend has to move away, you can still be friends from afar. Instead, we got an episode that tried to cram in too much for a story that accomplished nothing.

If this is all they were going to do with it, then it would have been better to just leave the question of Scootaloo's parents unanswered.

5074674

Not only do Scootaloo's aunts come off as bad, but according to the episode basically everyone in Ponyville was rotating Scootaloo-Babysitting duties. So the entirety of Ponyville comes off as unsupportive. Rarity was also name-checked as one of these ponies who occasionally moves in to watch her.

The idea of just having Scootaloo's parents "come home" is incredibly stupid, just in general. "We were busy for 9 years" is an awful plot device, and while maybe Hasbro nixed the idea of them being genuine deadbeats who finally came home to claim their daughter after all these years or having been lost/kidnapped at some point (it would be REALLY intense for the purposefully-family-friendly MLP) that doesn't make the end-product any better. It's a dumb concept at its core, and the execution is flimsy at best.

Hell they had to go out of their way to nix the comic/book canon of Scootaloo living with Aunt Holiday and Aunt Lofty just to make this work... only to at the end establish exactly the same foster-parent relationship they had in the other media, just so that they could somehow strongarm this nonsense of a story into being. I'm glad to see the aunts represented in the show (I really never thought it would happen), but Goddamn did they deserve to come in on a better episode.

My thoughts...

Yes! At long last! After all this time, Scootaloo's parents finally show up! :yay: :yay: :yay:

Snap Shutter and Mane Allgood? Scoot Irwin confirmed! ^3^

Looks like it's time to finally dump all those silly Orphan Scootaloo and Scootabuse fanfics into the incinerator!

Anyway, this episode was pretty fun. But the highlight of it was Scootaloo's parents. Call it a hunch or a 6th Sense, I choked on my freaking root beer when I realized what was going on and had a mini heart attack.

Oh, and Scootaloo's dad better stay the heck away from those damn stingrays.

My other thoughts...

Oh no, here comes a tsunami of fanfics and fan art.

No! It's not yet been a week! Leave poor Mane Allgood alone! Sure she's a milf, but come on!

I hope there won't be any of those fanfics were Scootaloo's actual parents die or worse. It'll break my poor unhealthy heart!

My final thoughts...

After so long... my life is finally complete! ^3^

This was...a mixed bag.

Yay, Scootaloo's parents being Jane Goodall & Crocodile Dundee, and having Holiday & Lofty rescued from the comics

Not too happy about the fact Scoots' parents have been out of her life for four years (going off Hearth's Warming Episodes)
Unless they met offscreen?

Still, they never instilled in Scootaloo the confidence that she eventually got on her own through her friends that her wings weren't important, so...

I did like that the townsponies all take turns making sure Scootaloo has a place to stay - even Dash is on that list, as limited as their interactions have been recently

And Scootaloo still loves her parents, so all the fics that have ponies yelling at Scoots' parents and taking her away from them are going to be extremely OOC

5074683

And Scootaloo still loves her parents, so all the fics that have ponies yelling at Scoots' parents and taking her away from them are going to be extremely OOC

Well, even if they SAY they love Scootaloo, what's on display here is an almost awe-inspiring level of child-neglect, so they're still not GOOD PARENTS, even if the episode wants to try to pretend they are just because they don't beat her or something.

5074674
I have to agree on that point of yours; I thought the "parental glidance" episode was a set-up for Scoots getting adopted; that would have brought me to such tears of joy seeing her become Dashie's new little sister. She loves and admires Dash and her parents so much, I thought it was a forgone conclusion too. But the episode cleared things up and set the record straight. I only wised they had done this sooner rather then later. Oh well, it was still a touching episode.

5074599
It's a matter of where you draw your lines. They could have put a little more time into selling how her parents work benefits all of Equestria; I think they pretty much just claimed that it does and left it like that.

My first thought is that they search for new medicines, but your more likely to find that in a rare fungus than you are in a cryptozoological discovery.

5074640
If I recall, Scootaloo's aunts were first introduced in Ponyville Mysteries: Riddle of the Rusty Horseshoe which came out in October 3, 2017, and were shown in the comic of the same name in July 18, 2018.
This was just one of those rare moments in the show that canonizes elements from the extra material.

Mane Allgood = Jane Goodall

Pun confirmed.
