Feghoot Contest · 7:38am Jun 15th, 2019

I'm one of the judges for Super Trampoline's Feghoot Contest!

The contest runs from June 14th to July 14th, and has a $100 prize!

Wondering what a feghoot is?

A feghoot is a story which ends in a pun, often a very groanworthy one that is a play on some common idiom, or which manages to lead up to some sort of recontextualized idiom. My dad loves them, and I think I inherited that from him. The Legend of Falling Rocks, Buffalo Brave was inspired by a feghoot he told me on a camping trip long ago.

The best feghoot that I've read this year wasn't even a pony fic, but a work of original fiction: The Proverbial Murder Mystery.

More examples of short feghoots can be seen here.

But it can't just be a pun at the end; you need to grab your reader's attention and hold it throughout the story, which is much more of a trick when you're required to make your story long enough to actually qualify as one by FIMFiction's standards. My dad's belief was that these sorts of jokes became progressively funnier the longer they went on, because it made the pun at the end all the more anticlimactic, but I'm not sure if I hold with that point of view; still, one of the best ways to pull off a feghoot is to make the audience forget that they're reading one, so that when you pull out the punchline, they're still surprised by it and try to give you a playful punch in the shoulder or make that giggle-snort-groan sound we all so adore.

Thanks for the plug! Just want to note that the minimum word length for this contest is 100. Stories under 1000 words just need to be in an anthology or something.

Feghoots seem HARD to do. I mean owls don't even like figs.

SSC link! Bless you, TD.
