Favorite moments of cinema: (500) Days of Summer · 2:20am Jun 7th, 2019

It seems unbelievable, but Summer turns 10 years old; true feminine figure of empowerment, who emerged before the theories of commercial-social tendencies were established, and that in the end, gave meaning not only to the so unjustly demonized woman, but also to that new version of sentimental man in a very own Millennial generation film that defined the role swap within the relationships of couples.

A breakthrough in romantic comedy, the 500 days caused an atypical effect that extended outside of his narrative towards society, pigeonholed Zooey Deschanel into that "nameless" character that every man knows, free, unattached and without the basic rules of love of the habitual male, a creature from which even songs had already been written and which every man vulgarly referred to as heartbreaker or maneater. That demonic as well as angelic creature finally has a name and pop culture we didn't wait to assign it to its dictionary: "Summer".

A brilliant achievement by Marc Webb, the film plays with its chronology to achieve a pacing that, like the same emotions of its protagonist, leads to a leap of emotions ranging from pure pity, to disappointment and depression after relationship, that leave the poor architect Tom stranded in bitterness and without the stability to understand the modus vivendi of this big, beautiful-eyed creature that has twisted his heart. Summer, on the other hand, as a supporting role, not only comes to name that "unnameable" entity that leaves aside the relational oppression of the male, but also narratively speaking, is the victim of two perceptions of audience, villain or heroine, depending on sex, ideology or more complex, sentimental situation in which the viewer in question is at the time of watching.

Extremely fun and even with a final turn that from the dramatic tone impacts in equal measure to his agile treatment and romantic tragedy, there is no doubt that everything went well for this film, including part of its fast and growing cult within pop culture that will continue to make it effective both in this and the generations to come.

I recognize myself a lot in Tom. Love at first sight is nonsense... you fall in love with the idea of someone and then it's impossible to let go of that image and see the person for whom they really are, see that they are wrong for you. Lots of people hate this movie simply because they refuse to see the reality, they rather the expectations and its lovely nice ending.

Happy anniversary Summer! At almost 3,650 days with you.
