Sweet and Smokey - Episode Reaction · 1:01pm May 26th, 2019
It’s that time again, time to watch another new episode of this last season! I haven’t kept up with the early releases in other countries, just sticking with the original schedule as it seems like people are kind enough to not spread out spoilers all over the place. Very nice.
Anyways, let’s get on with the show!
S P O I L E R S ! !
As the title made me hope, this seems to be a Smolder episode!
Gosh dernit, Fluttershy, stop being so cute!
Also dragons breed and hatch in seasons, confirmed.
Memeface.
... oh geebs, I know Fluttershy is purely going due to her love for babies, but how is her phobia for adult dragons doing? Was it cured the first time or by meeting other dragons like Smolder and alike? I mean, she’ll still risk running into the hugeass ones... I’ll stop overthinking now and just go back to watching.
A dragon with a sensitive side... Smolder are you just projecting your own issues about admitting you like to be cute now and again?
Dat face when she sniffs in the sulfur stink XDD
Aaaaand they split the party.
I do like the canon that Spike knits among things.
Huh, dragons hold shared nesting grounds? Also... pony walks off to just fly right up to a bunch of eggs of a very aggressive species, this can only go well.
Oh, good, I was getting worried. With Ember around Fluttershy might not get eaten for trespassing after all, phew.
Ouch, assumptions, Fluttershy.
Sooo... dragons just dump their eggs and leave the egg watching to the current dragon lord in charge? ... and her dad refuses to tell how to do her job? Wow...
Garble enters scene!
Huuuuuuuh....
Huh.
Heh... “Oh brother..”
Heh, I like Smolder. She’s showing a good mix of trying to offer what she has learned about friendship while tough enough to not let the others mock her, right here.
Heh “*Gulp* maybe later...”
Heh, Gar Gar.
Going about as one would expect.
OoOoooooh, Fluttershy...
Her powers work on dragons too!
Oh my gosh, Fluttershy XD
I like how Ember still appears awkward about Spike hugging her but not rejective either. So cute.
Guess Fluttershy is completely over her old fear of dragons.
Heh, Garble is a beatnik.
That IS a bit of a bad rep to get, being the ones causing a whole generation of dragons to stay unhatched. Dang.
... yer seriously that blind, Smolder?
“For a pony without a horn, she sure got a point.”
- Smolder, s9e9
Kinda cool, kinda cringey.
Gotta say it’s a neat concept that the dragon flame change colour based on the levels of heat created, caused by the dragon’s mood. Neat.
BABIES!!
Yeeah, but Smolder, it was the fact that others made fun of him, that saved the day, soooo... kinda misplaced time for that morale I think.
Think they hafta search Fluttershy for any baby dragons she’ll be trying to smuggle back home with her.
So many albinos among the newly hatched. Huh. I know it’s just repeated use of same dragon, like they used to do with most background ponies. But still. Looks like Fizzle’s been busy.
Another cute episode. Not a fave, it felt a bit all over the place in some ways, maybe I just didn’t had my head proper in the game or something. Was still a fun watch, and interesting concepts used like Garble’s issues of actually being the one mocked for once instead of the usual gang leader. His relationship with Smolder as his sister was neat too, she’s a good mix of both worlds of appreciating friendship and “soft” pony values while still holding respect among the dragons. And the whole issue with the dragon eggs and Ember being forced to go through the whole thing without pointers from her dad to figure out how to save the eggs in time.
Wasn’t easy to really predict anything in this one because of the way it was built up. What made Garble “sensitive” was first truly shown much later in the episode, and he and Spike never did become actual friends. The dragon eggs issue was due to temperature and not other kinds of possible influences as Fluttershy first seemed to think. Plenty of surprises, even though it brought a return of the slapstick on Spike cringe as usual.
It’s a mixed bag for me, but overall positive. A cute episode, great in its own way, but not one I’ll consider rewatching too much.
Thanks for reading.
