Detective Pikachu - Thoughts · 2:06am May 13th, 2019
Without a doubt, this is the first legitimately great movie adaptation of a video game. If you love Pokemon, you'll love the movie. If you don't care for Pokemon, the movie is still entertaining, heartwarming, and action-packed in all the right ways to be enjoyable to pure casuals as well without requiring prior knowledge of Pokemon lore. Just check out any of the countless reviews out there if you want more detail.
I went to see the movie both on Thursday and today. I was actually among the first people in America to see the movie during the pre-release preview screenings, being in EST and having gone to see the 4:00 showing (the first one of the day) and even right out of the gate the theater I was at had a substantial number of people attending. Today the theater was about three-fourths or so full, so the movie is clearly going strong in its opening weekend. I'm not predicting it'll make a billion at the box office, but I'm positive it'll make a profit.
I believe this is the start of an upward trend, my friends (excluding the Sonic movie *shudder*), for video game movies. Let us bask in the glory of the golden age that is upon us!
While I thoroughly enjoyed it, I know i'm not the target audience, or it wouldn't have been so predictable. I'm not necessarily sure I'd like to see another detective pikachu movie, but something built about that world I would like to see.
It was definitely a homage to Who Framed Roger Rabbit, which was a fantastic movie.

It bears many similarities, but it’s based on the Detective Pikachu spinoff game, so it’s a coincidence.
