Music to make you Misty · 3:55am Apr 25th, 2019
Yeah, I know that's an album cover for Jackie Gleason, but I'm troubled.
I'm not all that up on the happenings of the internet, social media, and the like. There has been one thing, though, that's been a god send for me when either my turntable was out of commission, I couldn't find a specific record I owned, or hell, if I didn't own it.
If you at all follow my... lets call it my "special project" fic, An Even Worse Insert, then you know that I use the videos from MusicProf78 extensively.
Well, today I discovered his channel was gone. Poof. Finished.
Youtube nuked him and all his musical glory.
Not sure, some of you might just say "oh, well you can still find the music elsewhere." That might be true for most music, but Professor 78 as I called him, had a knack for posting unique versions, or even lost songs, that you don't find anymore. I do this myself, although to a much milder extent, having only three songs on my youtube.
When I first found his channel some odd years ago, I was ecstatic, because every single one of his videos showed you, the viewer, the record label. Like, the actual label for that song, for it's single debut. Not only that, but he did his research on the songs. Listing off their positions on the popularity charts when they were released, their release dates, and other interesting factoids about the song, composer, writer, whoever was of interest. It was more than just a song, it was a learning experience. It was... history.
Sure, a lot of his recordings were technically from CD's, but he managed to find those which were authentic, even having the record crackles and pops mixed in. Even fresh, new records did this, don't let anyone fool you in saying they were always crisp and clean (78's were more noctorious for this, where as vinyls could be very clean, but I digress because this is about the best my favorite format). He specialized in the 78's, the big band and swing music, as well as some of the real early classical and jazz, pre-1920's and so on.
I think, however, his downfall was the latest trend. He'd started to expand into the 50's vinyls, the 45 rpm market, which a lot of those songs are still quite popular, and even the artists are still around.
With the 78 rpm records, plausible deniability could be used, I guess, because they were all, sadly, long gone by now. It's depressing, that I'll never get to see a live performance of Benny Goodman, but I have live album recordings of them. They're a real treat, let me tell you, the Glenn Miller ones especially so.
I'm rambling, anyway, back to Professor 78. For the last several years, I've relied on his content for ease of use when my turntable would crap out, or I was just expertly lazy and didn't feel like getting up from my computer. His music libraries were authentic, real, and would give me the same feelings as if I was listening to my very own records. He had several library tabs, broken down to top hits of a particular year (1941, 1942, and 1944 were the best ones), by artists, and others that I hadn't started diving into yet.
And now it's gone.
I don't know what's happening, because going back to my lack in social media, I've never tracked him, or if it's a her for that matter (I'm old school sexist so sue me), via anything, so I don't even know what's going on. Is he fighting it? Is it a lost battle? For the mass amounts of media he held, I don't foresee a return, as much as I want it. *EDIT* I've found his facebook, and he's talked a bit about it, so I wish him the best, but none the less this leaves a hole in my heart, and a spot on my liver.
https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Just-For-Fun/Musicprof78-689903871053047/ is the facebook page thingie, so if you enjoyed my music links, and his song library, please go show him some support.
Thanks, Professor 78, and keep that record spinning. I'd link one of your music videos to send this off, but since they're gone, I'll share the first song that I found shared by you, which lead me to your channel as a whole. There's something about Glenn Miller that just... makes your eyes misty at times.
Sorry to hear that. :(
At least there’s nothing like some good old big band classics like Glenn Miller to put some pep in your step...
rip
Damn, that sucks. :(
Oh, heck! He's gone! I knew that guy. I've got a rather eclectic bunch of vinyl albums digitized that I downloaded off UseNet newsfeeds around the turn of the millennia. (Ex. I have a month of Christmas albums. I could theoretically start playing them on Thanksgiving and not be done til New Years Day. So many Jingle Bells....)
Sorry to hear it. I know that music's important to you.
