Friendship is Card Games: Kenbucky Roller Derby #2 & #3

We return to the cutthroat world of G5 roller derby, where Sunny’s trying her darndest to prove she’s more than just a casual skater… and has assembled one of the most ragtag teams of misfits this side of the Mighty Ducks in the process. Let’s see how the story’s developed from there.

No, not mine. The Barcast's. The last call is currently under way, and if you want to hear my part in the grand interview lightning round, you can tune in at 4:20 Eastern/1:20 Pacific (about an hour from this posting.)

Just something I whipped together for fun one day, set to a possibly recognizable tune, all intended in good fun. And hey, given that I derived my Fimfic handle from a misremembered detail of the Mikado, it's only appropriate. :derpytongue2:

Friendship is Card Games: d20 Pony, Ch. 9, Pt. 1

Goodness, it’s been almost two years since I last checked in on Trailblazer’s adventures. IDW putting out comics almost as quickly as I could review them will do that, especially given all of the G5 video media coming out concurrently.

Friendship is Card Games: Twilight's Seven · 11:13am Apr 21st, 2019

The two hundredth episode! Such wonder! Such promise!

Of course I had to go get my car’s brakes replaced that morning!

Thankfully, that means that I can do a quasi-liveblog of an episode compiled from what the main voice actresses wish their characters got to do and haven’t yet. Given the kind of stuff I’ve seen Tabitha St. Germain come up with, including an adventure featuring a heroic, parallel universe version of Best Pony, I was definitely looking forward to this one.

I quite like Starlight and Twilight echoing Raven and Celestia. And the giant hoofprint signatures that obscure half of what Twilight’s signing. :rainbowlaugh:

Now, a lot of people have commented on the following discrepancy:

Season 2: “We never had a single fight.”
Season 9: “We competed over everything!

Speaking as a younger sibling, there’s no contradiction here. Friendly competition and fights are two very different things between brother and sister (and that’s putting aside any nostalgia goggles Twilight might have been wearing during that musical number.) Though I will note that I’ve posited something similar in the Shinespark siblings’ relationship. (Trigger warning: Flashlight.)

Aww, tiny baby Spike!

Good to see the parents channeled that competitive spirit positively. Those two truly are the unsung heroes of Equestria… though making their kids compete for affection and praise does explain how Twilight ended up so… Twilit.

So was Spike ever actually in the running for Sibling Supreme? Also, point in the “they’re siblings” column.

Today, the fluctuating spacetime of Equestria puts Canterlot within easy flying distance of Ponyville, even for Spike. Good to know.

Shining moved out after winning the crown? Funny and entirely understandable, but still kind a jerk move.

Double heh. More than one sibling rivalry this episode. And I do appreciate how Luna wants to actually accomplish things without help from the protagonists for once. That said, behave you two. We’ll get Starlight to switch your cutie marks again if we need to.
Also, I can only imagine how the current captain of the Guard feels about Shining getting called in to do their job.

Shinespark sibling wargames? All of my yes!

Wow. “Green Really Isn’t Your Color” echoes to this day. Forever…

Awfully presumptuous of you to assume you can assume Twilight Velvet’s authority, Celestia. At this point, I trust her more than you.

Add grumpy Luna horse noises to the list of why this episode is great. I get the feeling it’s going to be a long one by the time it’s done.

>anti-magic throne stone
>Star Swirl hauls it around telekinetically.
Okay, then. I mean, they get points for using an incredibly valuable strategic resource in a very wise way, but lose them for logical consistency. (And there’s the question of whether the exception for changeling magic will come into play further down the line…)

Also, I’m sure Star Swirl’s smirking to himself. If they’d just stuck to his original design for the castle, they wouldn’t need to heighten security. Take that, Mistmane!

Turning off the updraft fans seems easy. Just inform Fluttershy that they exist. Given the danger to the local birds, her reaction should see the guards shut them down out of self-preservation.

Sealing the tunnels seems advisable… but you have to wonder why said tunnels exist in the first place. And what strategic options they’re sacrificing by sealing them off.

:pinkiegasp: Crystal geese are canon!

People may criticize Shining for explaining the defenses, but this is actually a great way to maximize the effectiveness of the testing. After all, this simulates the worst-case scenario, when the enemy has perfect intel on those defenses and can prepare to overcome them… assuming he mentioned everything.

Ha! Twilight made more dioramas.

Ah, the perils of facing your sibling. They already know how you think. Also, nice to see that they’ve kept in touch enough that he can predict how she’d implement her Ponyville friends.

Okay… why has Rarity been practicing that speech? How long has she anticipated this sibling showdown?

Ooh, haven’t seen Rarity break out a full-immersion illusion like this since “Suited for Success.”
Or this is an imagine spot. Not sure.

Super Pinkio Galaxy is one of my favorite entries in the franchise.

Ah, we finally get to see baby Apple Bloom in a flashback.
Also, we’ve found a disguise even flimsier than Superman’s. At least Clark’s glasses break up the lines of his face.

… I’m legitimately unsure if Apple Chord was actually a thing that happened.

Fluttershy would make for an excellent infiltrator.

Huh. The crown really is made of aluminum foil. That’s what it looked like at first, but I wasn’t sure.

I see Applejack took lessons from cousin Orchard Blossom when it came to disguising her voice.

Wait, wait, wait, Dash got the Wonderbolts to do aerial recon of the castle grounds? I guess they really do have an interservice rivalry with the royal guard. The fact that this makes We Don’t Talk About Captain Thunderhoof slightly more canon disturbs me.

Okay, Twilight acting as a conspicuous distraction is actually brilliant.

Don’t worry, Pinkie. We’ve tried sending you into space. It didn’t go well.
Also, I’m concerned about how airtight that fishbowl is given how the spit isn’t dripping out… or I would be if I thought Pinkie actually needed oxygen.

… I have nothing to add to the information shakedown. That was just brilliant madness.

I guess hair care didn’t work out for Zephyr after all. A shame. Hopefully the girls can encourage him to give it another try.

Ah, the return of the dangerous mission outfit.
Also, I kind of wanted Spike to eat that circle of glass, though it’s probably the draconic equivalent of a dry rice cake. Though given how it vanishes…

Everypony senses Twilight’s doubt. And knows exactly where to look to indicate that.

Oh. Wow. That’s not exactly the kind of callback I enjoy.

Oh man. Sudden unexpected trip into deep emotional issues. And having to endure Zephyr Breeze for years. Which, of course, engenders deep emotional issues.

Wow, Twilight. Wow. Just break his heart into a million pieces. Hope the crown’s worth it.

:facehoof: The best security in the world doesn’t matter if your troops are this undisciplined.

Nice use of Maud. No one said Twilight was limited to just the Bearers.

I want a gif of Luna stroking that goose, and I want it yesterday. Derpibooru delivers.

The true moral of the story? Trust no one, at least when it comes to security.

And we have explicit confirmation of the three siblings’ relationship. Outstanding. (Not entirely in line with “Father Knows Beast,” but outstanding. This episode’s claims to the contrary, Twilight and Spike’s bond has never been easy to define.)

The episode as a whole was fantastic as well. On top of all of the individual shenanigans and meme-fodder facial expressions, we even got to see the guard actually do something! They don’t exactly get to show a lot of competence, granted, but at least they’re trying.

Now, on to something I know I do better than my sister:

This was a wonderful episode in so many ways. Plus I love a good genre pastiche to begin with and this episode was packed full of them.

I have a theory about the incompetence of the guards: notice how at the start of the episode Shining Armor says he doubled the patrols. That probably meant they had to take in a bunch of recruits they would normally have rejected. Like Zephyr Breeze, who might be doing this as a side job to get some extra cash. "What about this next guy? Eh, he's tall and slim, that's good enough for now, just give him something mind-numbingly easy to do."

You can understand how Shining would have missed the hole in the defenses. He was a fresh recruit and he was given the simplest job there is: stand in front of this bricked-up wall. How was Shining supposed to know that he would be easily lured away from his post by... um... okay, actually the honey pot is counterintelligence risk management 101. Why do I suddenly feel like Cadance's absence from this episode is more meaningful than it might appear? Perhaps she's remaining neutral in this :duck:

Speaking as a younger sibling, there’s no contradiction here. Friendly competition and fights are two very different things between brother and sister

EXACTLY! And yes, baby Spike being along with them for this was SOOOO adorable.

though making their kids compete for affection and praise does explain how Twilight ended up so… Twilit.

.... huh.... that.... that does explain a lot.

Okay, then. I mean, they get points for using an incredibly valuable strategic resource in a very wise way, but lose them for logical consistency.

Well, the overall mass was lower then the actual throne, maybe there are some kind of... other things at play, like the chest shielded them, or they have to be set up in a certain way. The way they talked about it, and what we've seen, I think all they were meant to do was block teleporting into the castle.

Sealing the tunnels seems advisable… but you have to wonder why said tunnels exist in the first place.

To give Celestia plenty of options to sneak out of the castle for a cake run.

The best security in the world doesn’t matter if your troops are this undisciplined.

Firebrand is going to have SOOO much fun with this. Best case, they were told to fall for it to get the Mane 6 over confident and in position for Shining to spring his trap.

This episode’s claims to the contrary, Twilight and Spike’s bond has never been easy to define

.
Eh, always came off as 'older sibling who helped raise a younger one' to me.

This ep was utterly insane in the best possible way. Oh and they revealed whose ideas where what.

Tara-The Twilight/Shining rivalry
Cathy- The Twi-Spike relationship exploration
Andrea- Pinkie Pie IN SPACE! and return of Flutterspy
Ashleigh- The RD-Zephyr scene and Apple Chord
Tabitha- Was the one responsible for this being a heist story.

5047511

That probably meant they had to take in a bunch of recruits they would normally have rejected. Like Zephyr Breeze,

Could work, my thought was Shining specifically brought him in as tactical RD and Fluttershy repellent, knowing how little either of them really want to interact with him. He just didn't understand quite how incompetent Zephyr was, even compared to your average guard.

Oh, I'm pretty sure Zephyr's talk about how guarding is his true calling is just an attempt to try and impress Rainbow Dash. "She's a Wonderbolt, I bet she likes soldier guys!"

But yeah, this episode was kinda silly, but very fun, and having Spike and Luna be the big winners was a really nice touch!

5047559
5047547
Luna brought him in, specifically because she knew he'd mess up.

I feel bad for him. We know he feels like a failure waiting to happen, especially compared to his self-assured, talented older sister, and then he only gets this new job because his boss is banking on his failure and throws him out right after.

And I do wonder what Fluttershy meant when she said Zephyr could learn about being a little brother from Spike. That line confused me a bit.

Rarity's proposition reminded me of the Red vs. Blue strategem.

"We're not Felix. Felix is smart. The Feds won't be expecting dumb. Look, we keep trying to strategize, and use codenames, and act like we're real soldiers. But we're not! We haven't been from the beginning. So why are we trying now? So I say we get in there, and do what we do best."

"Uhh, which is?"

"I have no idea! But, whatever it is, it's worked for us before."

Meanwhile, Applejack apparently lived the Mr. Hyunh story.

5047563
Probably that Zephyr could try making an effort to earn something like Spike has been (desperately) trying this entire series, instead of being a freeloader.

I see Applejack took lessons from cousin Orchard Blossom when it came to disguising her voice.

Are you kidding? It's probably the other way around:

5047563
As said, less 'little brother' and more brother in general, and not being a self centered, self absorbed, lazy, useless parasite.

I like how there's a fairly even split between male and female guards now.

Luna and Celestia's bickering was a delight, as always. I really like how despite their reconciliation and Luna coming off her superpowered evil kick, they still grate on each other's nerves so easily. They really are siblings.

Twilight and Spike's relationship strikes me as similar to Lilo and Nani's from Lilo and Stitch. Outwardly a sibling relationship, but with heavy parental shades and not truly only one or the other.

5047571
5047568
Thing is, he wasn't freeloading in this episode. He took a job and he messed up. He didn't throw in the towel like he did with his other jobs before, he simply failed. Oh, and honestly, if Spike had been called to guard something and Rarity came along to distract him, he'd fail too, so yeah.

That's what is confusing, because what you say feels more like what viewers want to say to Zephyr than what the episode establishes. It's not what happened and it's not what would make sense from the context in which Fluttershy said it.

5047577
Fluttershy didn't know any of that at the time, nor was she talking about that in the first place. But does have many, many years of dealing with Zephyr being Zephyr. She wasn't talking about a myopic, single episode issue, but Zephyr's whole life that she's had to suffer through.

5047574

I like how there's a fairly even split between male and female guards now.

Not only that but there is some decent variety when it comes to looks. So much for the headcanon that they use a spell to make them all look alike.

5047591
I think that, if anything, the appearance of female guards and of more varied appearances actually synergizes well with the old spell headcanon. For most of the show's run, spellwork or enchanted armor or whatever else made all the guards look alike. Now, for whichever internal reason, the standards are being relaxed and more individuality is creeping in in the guards' appearance. If nothing else, this explains why there's been a sudden increase in variety in the guards' appearance in the last few seasons without having to assume that the Princesses only recruited identical stallions beforehand.

The goose part does not seem well thought out. Especially when they have to run a court.

Admittedly, yes, it would also be funny if some noble stepped up to share some foolish idea, only to be drowned out by the sound of all the honking, but it would also mean that serious issues and conversations were being disrupted.

Okay… why has Rarity been practicing that speech? How long has she anticipated this sibling showdown?

I imagine she rehearses all sorts of drama routines.

… I’m legitimately unsure if Apple Chord was actually a thing that happened.

Considering the Liarjack expression after being called on it, I imagine most if not all of that backstory was made up.

People may criticize Shining for explaining the defenses, but this is actually a great way to maximize the effectiveness of the testing. After all, this simulates the worst-case scenario, when the enemy has perfect intel on those defenses and can prepare to overcome them… assuming he mentioned everything.

Plus, he knows Twilight. The test wasn’t “Can you defeat these five things” it was “Can you defeat these five things without doing what I expect you to do.”

I guess hair care didn’t work out for Zephyr after all. A shame. Hopefully the girls can encourage him to give it another try.

Hopefully its more that there were so many ads in the paper to be a guard that he thought he could sidejob it for some quick bits while doing his hair stuff. Considering how many fresh faces there are they probably had a recruitment drive.

I want a gif of Luna stroking that goose, and I want it yesterday.

This episode was great with the expressions. But great with the subtly too. Like in the flashback you could see spike drawing stars on the wall when they were putting up gold stars on the board. But also if you go back and watch when Shining was explaining the traps you see Celestia’s expression looking off screen presumably at Spike and Luna talking

And we have explicit confirmation of the three siblings’ relationship

I loved his episode, because “Shining and Spike interacting / Spike being called a little brother” was one of those ‘things the show will never do’. But in this episode we got both and some valuable flashbacks of showing Spike being there with the family.

Far past the Season 1 assumption of being just a smart pet. No, he’s a family member. Night Light and Velvet changed his diapers and raised him along side with their family. All good stuff and answers that question of “Wow Celestia gave a 7 year old a dragon and was like. Good luck!”

Imagine all the Spike-abuse fics we would have been spared if this episode came out in like season 3

Though this does have unfortunate implications for Sci-Twi and her pet dog. But lets leave that can of worms alone x_x

Overall I am happy with a fandom mystery solved. Sure it’s not a huge fanservice wild ride like the 100th . But sometimes the those moments are saved for unexpected. I remember being on stream for The Last Round Up when the first line of that episode was “Watch it, Derpy!” That chat blew up.

I keep my fingers crossed for the middle of an episode where Twilight turns to the mirror and says “Let me ask Sunset.”

5047581
Point. Too bad then he seems to be trying to be better but nopony notices.

5047776
He took a job that seems to have been taken primarily for the "ohhh mare's dig a chick in uniform' angle, and the praise and love he thinks it'll get him, rather then anything involved with what the job is. Massively screws up his ONE JOB, and then refuses to even admit he screwed up, blaming someone else for not having explicitly made clear what you'd have to be a freaking moron to need spelled out to you.

I haven't had this much fun watching an episode since "Road to Friendship." And I think Twilight's relationship with Spike is similar to Applejack and Apple Bloom, and Rarity and Sweetie Belle. They're older sisters, but they mother their younger siblings because of the age difference.

>anti-magic throne stone
>Star Swirl hauls it around telekinetically.
Okay, then. I mean, they get points for using an incredibly valuable strategic resource in a very wise way, but lose them for logical consistency.

IIRC, Shining specifically says that the anti-magic stone blocks spells that would be used to get inside – presumably telekinesis doesn't count as a spell, but teleportation does. And it wouldn't make sense to have something that suppresses telekinesis when there are two alicorns and probably dozens of unicorns living there. This does raise the question of how the anti-magic throne was modified, however. Maybe it had something to do with it being broken into pieces – your guess is as good as mine.

5047511
Bringing in recruits so green they count as elves certainly explains some of the more dubious actions of the guard. As for Dash's successful seduction, Shining may not have complete dossiers on every aspect of the Bearers' lives, whereas Luna has access to the dirty laundry of literally everything that sleeps.

Why do I suddenly feel like Cadance's absence from this episode is more meaningful than it might appear? Perhaps she's remaining neutral in this :duck:

She's been around this family long enough that she knows better than to get involved in matters of the Sibling Supreme. I highly doubt she's trying to ship Zephbow.

5047547
Thanks for the breakdown of who wanted what. Great to get context on what the episode writers started from.

5047570
Excellent point. I'd forgotten about that short.

5047574 5047591
I'd argue that the sudden appearance of female guards supports uniform spells that have recently been phased out, or at least relaxed. The mares were always there; they just looked like stallions.

5047612
There are a lot of impracticalities and potential for more harm than good in the plan. As just one example, all those turbines are going to play merry havoc on pegasi who are trying to get into or just around the castle on legitimate business.

5047652
Here's the thing. Dash's precise line was as follows:

:rainbowhuh: "Wait. Did you make all that up, or did that actually happen?"

It's clear that whatever would next come out of Applejack's mouth would be a lie, but the way the question is phrased, it's not clear whether it would be a "Yup, definitely didn't make that up just now" or a "Don't be ridiculous, I sure as heck didn't just spill my old secret identity by accident."

5047658
It was indeed great to see Twilight's brothers finally have some meaningful interaction with one another. Also, fully agreed with you on the spoiler-blocked text. Incredibly unlikely, but we can dream.

Though this does have unfortunate implications for Sci-Twi and her pet dog. But lets leave that can of worms alone x_x

Given that said dog is still a puppy, he definitely doesn't have the same deep history with his Twilight and Shining Armor.

5047814

This does raise the question of how the anti-magic throne was modified, however. Maybe it had something to do with it being broken into pieces – your guess is as good as mine.

There definitely seems to be less of it in the chest then there was in the throne, and continuous crystal structure could be just as important as total mass of the mineral, if not more so. Heck, it may even explain why Maud was so easily on hoof; they called in a rocktor of geology to help process the stuff.

Wonderful as always darling.
It's also nice after nine years to get confirmation if sorts on "Twilight Velvet is a slightly abusive Tiger Mom"

5047870
Remember, the ponies could use magic as soon as the throne exploded. There had to be plenty of rocks lying around right there.

5047866

I'd argue that the sudden appearance of female guards supports uniform spells that have recently been phased out, or at least relaxed. The mares were always there; they just looked like stallions.

Or Luna has increasing say over security and wants more than eye-candy out of the guard... or different kinds...

5047784
Either that, or he took it because he wanted to impress Rainbow Dash specifically. In fact, I wouldn't put it past Luna to bait him with that from the start.

5047866

She's been around this family long enough that she knows better than to get involved in matters of the Sibling Supreme. I highly doubt she's trying to ship Zephbow.

Oh by the way: Apprently, it was RD's voice actress who wanted more interaction between Rainbow and Zephyr Breeze. So maybe Cadance doesn't ship it, but Ashleigh Ball might! :rainbowlaugh:

Yay, this was a delightful episode. Love your analysis as usual.

Filch is awesome, but seems undercosted. Perfectly curved for casting your stolen three-drop next turn. Looks very strong.

Enhanced Interrogation sent me off on a mental tangent: In our world, it's rubber-hose cryptanalysis. In the HPMOR-verse, it's lead-pipe Legilimency. What's the Equestria equivalent? Obviously we're not going to get a *canon* answer, but surely fandom can offer something.

5048347
Officially nonexistent agents who have been fully briefed on Twilight's exploits just call their methods "Sunset's Touch." Whether they're referring to telepathic memory reading or sledgehammer diplomacy, they're right.

You know, I just love these blogs to death... but they make me feel so old.

So very old.

I've decks with Ice Age and Homelands cards lying around somewhere. I liked Homelands back in the day, and Ice Age, and Mirage, and when I first saw Mirrodin, I thought the devs must've gone insane with power creep.

So... so... old.

Heh, I just pictured Celestia picking up the Equestrian version of MtG with her literally hundreds of years old cards.

To be fair, the devs did go insane with power creep in Mirrodin Block. Artifact-focused blocks don't have a good track record in general, and they were only just figuring out how good Equipment was. (Spoiler: Better than they thought.) And I truly do not know why anyone thought printing affinity and artifact lands in the same set was a good idea.

That said, you may be pleased to know that Karn, Teferi, and Jaya Ballard are still relevant cards and characters. To say nothing of Nicol Bolas.

And if you think Celestia's cards are old, imagine the ancient binders full of Luna's collection hidden somewhere in the Castle of the Two Sisters!

The number of stories popping up on this very site is a testiment to Bolas's popularity^^ Ah, good old Teferi.

And if you think Celestia's cards are old, imagine the ancient binders full of Luna's collection hidden somewhere in the Castle of the Two Sisters!

Oh my God, you're right! Luna is the avid player! And she doesn't have many opponents because who wants to play a princess? Plus she's a sore loser. Celestia has, like, two or three decks mostly to bond with Luna over. Contrary to what might be expected, her favourite isn't the White but a Blue/Red Burn/Control deck. Some of Luna's older cards are printed on magic-treated wood and you need to speak Old Ponish to understand the flavour text.

Would the Equestrian version have just five colours, or six? In line with the Elements of Harmony/the Virtues of the Pillars? White already uses a sun symbol, one awfully close to Celestia's Cutie Mark. What would Luna's Mark come to represent? Black? Another colour? A Blue/Black mix powered by deepwoods or underground caverns? Would Purple become a colour, with an emphasis on Auras and synergy and settlements as its land type? Represented with a star?:twilightoops:
