The Bridge: Amalgam 'Lost Project' Universe Timeline · 10:01pm Apr 9th, 2019

An alternate timeline to The Bridge I created with input and help from Tarbtano. The idea is to take the many Lost Projects and make a timeline out of the...less insane ones.

Original Timeline can be found here: https://www.fimfiction.net/blog/345509/the-bridge-kaiju-amalgam-universe-timeline

All events prior to the beginning can be assumed to have happened fairly the same to the original timeline.

1984: A strange earthquake near Attu Island occurs and a strange dragon-like creature is sighted emerging from a pillar of red light. Those witnessing it also reporting a second Godzilla rising from the sea with a roar soon after. A second sea monster-like kaiju appears at Lake Suwa, with a third ape-like monster soon sighted. The second Godzilla soon begins destroying ships at sea, while the other creature battles with the military and emerges victorious. During this, it's discovered that the three are in fact a single kaiju capable of transforming. Chinese myths and simularities to them result in them being given the names Doragon, Enjin, and Mizu, with the base entity being called 'Bakan' from an incomplete text.

Meanwhile, a scientist named Dr. Inamura discovers a new substance he dubbed Reikanium, but fears its potential usage as a nuclear weapon even more dangerous than existing ones.

Godzilla comes ashore and fights the mysterious kaiju, but loses the initial fight, being knocked unconscious into the sea as the creature continues its warpath. After attacking and being recharged at a nuclear plant, the fully empowered Godzilla confronts Bakan again, engaging in a fierce battle and ultimately forcing it to assume a towering chimera of its different forms. Godzilla ultimately emerges victorious by ripping some kind of core from Bakan's body and obliterating it, the corpse disappearing into nothing. Rampaging across Japan, Godzilla is defeated and by a Reikanium weapon. Inamura would continue his research, with Reikanium showing potential as a grand new futuristic energy source.

1988: Signs begin to point towards Godzilla's survival and that he may be returning. Considering many prospects, biotechnology is rejected and robotics is instead the route taken. A highly advanced computer system made with Mysterian technology, named Kyron5, is created and placed in charge of a robot called the Asuka Fortress (as it is intended to act as a mobile fortress), made via a mix of Mysterian mecha technology and human tech. While rudimentary in construction, it is more advanced than the Mysterians' Moguera.

However, a revolt occurs within the government, with the Asuka Fortress being commandeered by them. A task force lead by Goro Gondo would manage to infiltrate the fortress and kill the insurrectionists, however in the crossfire Kyron5 is damaged and goes rogue. Commandeering construction materials, Kyron5 begins to construct an army of machines.

Meanwhile, Godzilla emerges and goes on the rampage. Seeing an opportunity to destroy one or both monsters, the JDF lures Godzilla towards Kyron5. After destroying its defenses, Godzilla battles the Asuka Fortress. Despite nearly winning by injecting Godzilla with a large amount of cadmium, Godzilla ultimately wins. The monster King would then collapse in the sea and vanish beneath the waves.

1990: Visitors from the future arrive and claim that Godzilla would return a year later to destroy the Japan. Engaging in a time travel plan to undo the monster's existence, they would teleport the dinosaur that would become Godzilla to the Bering Sea, believing the 1884 and 1954 beasts were the same creature. In doing so they would ironically create Godzilla themselves. At the same time, a huge larva emerges and begins heading towards Japan. A pair of tiny women named Moll and Lora warn Miki Saegusa that the future people are not to be trusted and have created an abomination.

This was a false plan all along, however, as their true intent was to remove Godzilla from existence, as he'd one day become Japan's greatest defense. In his place they left a genetically engineered 'Fairy Mothra' on the island, which was mutated by the tests into grotesque insectiod monster that laid dormant until summoned to cripple Japan. Having based the creature off of a creature logged in their history as 'Mothra', the same creature Moll and Lora act as heralds for, and be their 'guardian' of the world the way they see fit. Realizing the true Mothra is active, the Futurians name the creature Gigamoth and set her loose on Japan.

Despite being told by the twins that Mothra will stop the mutant, the government attempts to create a new Godzilla from the dinosaur, only to further empower him. With Mothra and Gigamoth metamorphosing into their imago forms, the two engage first each other and then the arriving Godzilla in a three way battle. Gigamoth is mortally wounded and the remaining evil Futurians killed by Godzilla when teleported into the fray, but Mothra manages to defeat the weakened Godzilla and drive him back into the sea. She then purifies Gigamoth, recognizing the creature was a tool of evil men and not evil itself, allowing her to die a Mothra-like being who Mothra buries at sea.

1993 :Seeking a way to defend themselves against Godzilla, humanity dredges up Gigamoth's corpse and rebuilds it as a cyborg dubbed MechaMothra for use against Godzilla. In the frozen North, Mothra's dark twin Battra and his herald Belvera awaken, and seek to destroy humanity. Belvera conveys to humanity that Battra is furious that the dead Gigamoth's grave was disturbed and a mockery of himself and Mothra created from her corpse. This ultimately leads to a three way battle between Battra and MechaMothra with Mothra ultimately joining in to try and reason with him. Godzilla, possessed by a dark presence, goes on the war path, resulting in MechaMothra being diverted to face him. Eventually Mothra convinces Battra to help stop Godzilla, leading to all three facing Godzilla. In the process, Gigamoth's mind briefly asserts herself and controls her cyborg body to take a critical blow intended for Mothra and dying in the process, allowing Godzilla to be defeated and the dark presence exercised. However, in the process of carrying Godzilla to sea, Battra is killed, causing Mothra to take his place traveling into space to destroy a meteor that could destroy Earth.

1993:

An egg is discovered on Adonoa Island which hatches into a baby Godzillasaur which is raised by Azusa Gojo. A giant pteranadon named Radon is also present, but seemingly killed by Godzilla.

What appears to be a meteorite crash lands on Earth. C.C.I. examines it, discovering it to be some kind of alien space craft of ancient origin. Indications suggest it was sent off course towards the planet at some point from a distant galaxy. Mysterians recognize aspects of the data recovered as being similar to a race called the Simians. However, before this find can be exploited, a strange technology, named Berserek after the ship's computer's data, goes on the rampage. It quickly assimilates all G-Force weaponry sent to fight it, changing forms as it does so with its initial form vaguely resembling Godzilla but gradually becoming more and more like him as it heads to the nearest source of metal and technology to assimilate.

Coming up with a bold plan, the baby is intended to be used to lure Godzilla to Berserek in hopes one or both may be killed in the battle. However, Radon survived and attacks a passing nuclear sub to mutate into more powerful white form and arrives to rescue the baby. However, Berserek makes his way directly to Godzilla, seeming drawn to him, beginning a three way battle with Rodan knocked unconscious and mortally wounded. Berserk eventually assimilates a large portion of the city, becoming a 300 meter tall leviathan and begins overpowering Godzilla, ultimately impaling him on a mechanical spear through his spinal brain and beginning to assimilate him as well. The baby Godzilla gives off a distress call, resulting in Radon sacrificing himself to revive Godzilla. Godzilla blows Berserek back by discharging his revitalized power into it before obliterating large potions of its body with a red spiral beam, including its core, finally crippling and destroying the machine.

At Azusa's request, the baby departs with Godzilla into the sea, the two being renamed Godzilla Senior and Godzilla Junior.

A UN space craft is destroyed and all members declared killed. Unknown to everyone, an astronaut named Takegami, survived, infected with an unknown alien virus.

1994: Berserek's remains are salvaged are used to create a powerful robot, dubbed Union Mechagodzilla, to protect Japan. The machine can split into two vehicles and is controlled via a more primitive AI that needs pilots to operate, in hopes to prevent the rampancy present in Berserek. However, Mothra's heralds return to warn of an incoming threat. When Mothra went into space, she carried Godzilla's cells with it, which ultimately merged with a cryogenic organism to become a twin tailed, winged, albino Godzilla clone dubbed AstroGodzilla (later renamed Xenilla). AstroGodzilla arrives on Earth, Trapping the now 30 meter Junior in an ice barrier to goad Godzilla Senior into fighting him. The kaiju departs to a nearby city and turns it into an ice fortress, the intense cold driving the humans out. Union Mechagodzilla is deployed and battles AstroGodzilla for several hours before Senior arrives. The two team up to face the space monster, with Union Mechagodzilla critically damaged in the process of gravely wounding AstroGodzilla. Before Senior can kill him, the space monster retreats into space under cover of an explosion and is believed dead for years.

1995: Head of C.C.I. Katagiri would approach Dr. Genshiro Shiragami with a proposition of creating several bio-engineered monsters to combat Godzilla. Among these is a humanoid creature called the Biomonster, but nicknamed Frankenstein after the creature of the same name. Despite its hulking appearance, it is a kind creature that gets along well with Miki Saegusa. In secret, however, Katagiri would have cells he gathered from Junior used by Shiragami to create two kaiju, based off ancient creatures of legend called Anguirus and Baragon. Shiragami would splice Junior's cells into a rose that he previously spliced his deceased daughter Erika's cells into in hopes of making it immortal.

Birth Island, home of Godzilla and his son, is found destroyed in a huge explosion. Shortly there after, a dead deep sea monster washes ashore, highly radioactive and killed almost certainly by Godzilla. Katagiri would covertly have cells from this monster incorporated into Baragon. His pact with Katagiri complete, Shiragami would leave with his rose to leave in secret.

However, Godzilla soon appears, the incident having sent him into a supercharged meltdown state and Junior into a teenager, with the former potentially taking the entire world with him when he can't contain the increasing energy. At the same time, the grave of the original Godzilla is disturbed, resulting in manifestations of the specter appearing throughout Japan and causing destruction. Junior senses the trouble, alerted by Miki, heads to Japan and confronts the spirit of his grandfather, who is revealed to have been resurrected and driven by the vengeful dead of WWII. In its still forming state, Junior manages to defeat the spectral Godzilla and seemingly destroy it, though is badly injured in the process.

Senior arrives and attempts to spend his last few hours with his son. However, Katagiri, enraged at the JDF refusing to deploy Frankenstein to kill Godzilla for fear of triggering his meltdown, secretly has Anguirus and Baragon deployed to kill him, passing them off as natural monsters. The two put up a fight, but are ultimately no match for Godzilla and Junior. However, the Godzillas' atomic rays would have an abnormal effect on their cells, resulting in them mutating and melding together into a single hybrid monster called Baraguirus. The hybrid continues the fight, proving a formidable foe, but is ultimately mortally wounded.

However, the revenant Godzilla reveals itself to still be alive and possesses the dying kaiju, becoming a heavily mutated and supercharged Godzilla-like beast only vaguely resembling the original. Senior and Junior attempt to fight it, but are overpowered until Frankenstein is deployed, ironically to back them up. Despite this, they are still on the backfoot with Junior being mortally wounded until a man named Isayama chooses to awaken the guardian monsters Baragon, Gamera, and Anguirus, who arrive to help. In light of this, Katagiri's Baragon and Anguirus are renamed to Anguirus Hound and Sea Baragon.

As they begin to gain the upperhand, Godzilla's meltdown begins. The kaiju, realizing his death is about to happen, drags himself over to his mortally wounded sound, with Frankenstein nobly sacrificing himself to prevent Ghost Godzilla from interfering. Merging his essence with Junior, Senior not only prevents his self destruction, but mutates Junior into a full grown adult who assaults Ghost Godzilla alongside Gamera, Baragon, and Anguirus, ultimately killing him.

Junior collapses from the strain of his sudden mutation, with Katagiri attempting to have G-Force move in to finish him off. However, the Guardian Beasts stand in their way, preventing attack until Junior recovers and retreats into the sea. After which, the Guardian Beasts would peacefully depart.

1996: Mothra returns after destroying the asteroid and returns to Earth, laying an egg on Infant Island. Belvera, driven by rage and revenge, releases DesGhidorah on the world, who would go on the rampage. During this, Belvera finds him possessed by a dark force that drives him to more rapidly attempt to exterminate life on the planet. Mothra and her newly hatched larvae Lea attempt to fight the demonic dragon, but are overwelmed until Gamera arrives, still healing from injuries sustained in the Ghost Godzilla battle. While weakened and unable to turn the tide outright, he is strong enough to help them retreat while the senior Mothra collapses on Infant Island to rest. Lea cocoons and transforms into her incredibly powerful Imago form, returning to defeat DesGhidorah, exercising the presence and sealing him back away.

1997: Dagahra, a malfunctioning First Civilization creation, appears alongside the lost Mu Island Chain. Lea, her mother still recovering, faces Dagahra and ultimately manages to defeat him after receiving a power up and aquatic form. However, during the battle the dark presence would again appear, this time in a shade of Mizu, and mutate one of Dagahra's starfish into a monster named Hitodah who nearly turns the tables in Dagahra's favor until one of the Guardian Beasts, Manda, awakens and assists, killing the mutant.

1998: A meteorite crashes to Earth somewhere in Utah and bizarre occurrences begin to happen with animal mutilations and strange attacks. A Godzilla-like kaiju emerges in the Philippines and makes her way towards the US coast. Despite Mothra's fairies warning she is benevolent, the US military opens fire on the creature, who refuses to fight back even when attacked by a mecha called the Gotengo and, with apparent reluctance, retreats back into the sea.

Meanwhile, a creature initially mistaken for Godzilla, later dubbed 'Zilla' appears and attacks New York.

It is discovered the Philippines creature is one of the Guardian Beasts named Raiga, and that she was awakened to counter the incoming threat of a doomsday beast called the Gryphon. The Mysterians recognize the name as a type of probe used by a certain invading alien race to prepare worlds for them to invade, and if not stopped it could be the end of life on Earth. The Gryphon emerges and makes its way to New York, Raiga following close behind by sea. In New York, American military lure Zilla to the Gryphon, leading to a battle between the two.

While much, much weaker than Godzilla or the Gryphon, Zilla manages to use her speed and agility combined with the narrow maze of buildings to keep pace and hold her own against the Gryphon for quite some time and even inflicts serious damage multiple times. However, the Gryphon's superior healing factor wins out in the end and it outlasts Zilla, ultimately killing her. Despite this, Zilla's battle with the Gryphon managed to keep it busy long enough for Raiga to arrive.

The two engage in a fierce, back and forth battle. Finally, the Gryphon manages to assimilate some of Raiga's DNA, gaining the ability to fire lightning from its wings which it bombards her with from the air. However, when the smoke clears this turns out to be a serious mistake, with Raiga having absorbed the electricity and sending it right back as a bolt of crimson lightning, flash frying and obliterating the Gryphon.

Zilla's offspring are all seemingly wiped out, but a sole surviving egg hatches as a much more powerful adult, who would fight mutations and a dormant alien ship world wide alongside the H.E.A.T. team.

However, throughout the year Earth benevolent kaiju would be kept busy fighting many strange creatures spawned by the dark presence's growing influence, including a red dragon-like creature called Mogu. Also during this time, a creature named Redmoon awakens on the lunar surface with space satellites detecting an image similar to Doragon in the area. Meanwhile, on Habu Island, an image similar to Enjin is sighted as a second monster named Erabus emerges. The two kaiju converge in Okinawa and, while expected to fight, turn out to be male and female of the same species with drastic sexual dimorphism. Mating, they have a child name Hafun. While not aggressive at first, Hafun is kidnapped by an entrepreneur seeking to take advantage of the creature, sending the parents into a berserk rampage, with a dark presence overtaking the two and increasing their power immensely, Redmoon gaining powerful wind powers and Erebus gaining powers based off of land. However, during the fight, Miki Saegusa conveys the situation, with the two struggling to restrain the possessed and empowered kaiju. This continues until King Caesar rescues the infant, who likely would've died had it not been the case. Returning them to his parents, the two calm down and manage to exercise the malevolent presences. The two depart peacefully and take up residence in the Mu Island chain with their child.

This would come to a head when the ancient monster King Ghidorah arrives and began a rampage, ravaging cities and kidnaps thousands of children on which to feed.

Mothra Lea, her mother, and the newly awakened Godzilla Junior would intercept and confront Ghidorah, with their amassed allies in tow. However, the battle would be cut extremely short when an immensely powerful and evil force emerges on Attu Island. Revealing itself to be the dark presence, as well as the true identity of 'Bakan', Bagan, the God of Extinction, begins its own rampage. Despite being only at a minuscule percentage of its full might, Bagan proves nigh unstoppable to anything in its path and proves capable of annihilating all life on Earth in short order if not stopped.

In a shocking development, King Ghidorah ceases his offensive and reluctantly agrees to fight against Bagan, an ancient enemy whom he despises more than any of his opponents combined. Freeing his brother DesGhidorah, all of Earth's benevolent kaiju unite against Bagan with the military joining in with everything they've got. Unexpected help comes in the form of an ancient super species that would come to be called Gojira.

Despite power and numbers, Bagan's immense power proves formidable. In a long, grueling, and exhausting battle, several kaiju are killed by the evil god, including DesGhidorah when Bagan rips his core out of his chest and crushes it while his brother is seemingly mortally wounded, Gojira is ultimately slain, and Mothra Senior sacrifices her life to protect her daughter from one of Bagan's beams, giving all her remaining energy to Lea in the process.

The tide finally begins to turn when Gamera sacrifices himself, self destructing in a gigantic explosion, wounding Bagan, but the God of Extinction still proves implacable despite being vastly out numbered. Finally, Ghidorah re-enters the fray and wraps his necks around a distracted Bagan, seeming to laugh manically even as Bagan rips one of his heads off trying to escape, before the King of Terror unloads all of his power in one shot with enough force to level a continent at point blank range into the wound Gamera opened up, killing himself in the process.

Junior stumbles across a near dead Bagan in the ruins, who grabs his neck and unloads thoughts and memories into him. The psychics present capable of handling it imply this was a dying taught or request that the young Godzilla could easily become like it in the future, as Bagan was once benevolent itself. Despite this, the 4 billion year old god shows fear of death in its final moments and Junior stays with it as it dies.

1999: C.C.I. uncovers a dormant alien ship on the ocean floor and raise it to the surface. Fearing the possibility of a repeat of the Berserek incident, Katagiri orders it destroyed immediately. With its defenses lowered, the ship is nearly destroyed but manages to fight back until Junior emerges from the ocean and ultimately destroys the craft with his heat ray.

Katagiri and Junior have a face off, but the kaiju disappears beneath the wave without further incident. Meanwhile, a C.C.I. facility sees a breakout occur, with a strange creature named Barubaroi escaping and running rampent until it's burned to cinders. However, pieces escape and make their way out, absorbing insects in the South Sea and gaining flight. As it moves, it begins assimilating more and more animal life, ultimately growing into a massive, multiheaded abomination.

As it arrives in Tokyo, Katagiri's illegal experiments are exposed when Barubaroi absorbs Junior's cells kept in the C.C.I. headquarters to grow to a size larger than even Godzilla, with Barubaroi revealed as a genetic abomination he had created alongside Anguirus Hound and Sea Baragon but deemed to dangerous to be used. When it escaped, it merged with tissue samples of the Gryphon and gained an out of control version of the Gryphon's assimilation ability. Junior is given a free pass into Tokyo to battle Barubaroi, and after a ferocious battle manages to kill it by incinerating it. Katagiri falls to his death after a staredown with Godzilla, the reasons unknown to this day.

2001: Takegami, preserved by the strange alien virus, is finally found dormant in an escape pod and returned to Earth. Unknown to all, this virus, brought to Earth's system by Berserek, would finally become active in Earth's environment, leading to Takegami mutating into a gigantic humanoid monster named M. Due to his own understandable terror at his situation and mishaps, he would be mistaken from an evil monster and attacked by the military, accidentally causing more damage due to not understanding his powers, which are toxic and acidic in nature.

Junior arrives to confront M, who, due to his long time in space, mistakes him for his more aggressive father and attacks him, more aggressively once he sees his daughter in the area. After a long fight, Takegami's daughter would stand between the two, telling Junior, who she understands as a benevolent monster, her father's plight. Junior understands and calms M down. The two would find a kindred spirit in the other, both knowing what it's like to have a loved one they're now too dangerous to be near.

M would go on to make his home in the wilderness of Japan, but ultimately become an extremely close ally to Junior. The two seeing one another as kindred spirits, with M, a father and mature man, understanding Junior's plight as a teenager who lost his father, as that is the situation his daughter ultimately ended up in. In many ways, M would become like a father to Junior, and prove beneficial, with both helping the other learn how to use their powers to protect and minimize the damage. M would convey this to Miki Saegusa in conversation.

2002: Several ancient, bat-like kaiju, the 'Gyaos' awaken on a remote island. Filled in on the situation by Raiga that they are malfunctioning Guardian Beasts, he and the Guardians would hunt them down. According to Miki, Junior would dedicate himself to this task as it was originally one given to Gamera, and he blamed himself for not being strong enough to prevent his sacrifice.

During this, Junior happens on an egg left behind when Gamera self destructed, a failsafe included in his creation. From the egg hatches a baby Gamera, who would be affectionately nicknamed Toto by many children, but officially dubbed Gamera Jr. Junior would raise the infant who would eventually join Junior and his allies in defending the world when old enough.

2006: Junior is drawn to a remote location to find Dr. Shiragami's rose has grown into a giant, reptilian/plant hybrid creature known as Biollante, who had been living with the doctor ever sense. Recognizing her as blood (and by appearance, as despite her plant nature she is noticeably reptilian) Junior befriends his 'daughter' and visits her frequently.

2007:

A swarm of alien locust-like creatures, having followed Gryphon to Earth from a distant star, devour all plant life on an island Junior is sleeping on, before forming into a kaiju named Deathla. Beginning multiple battles, the two would finally make their way to Las Vegas. Biollante, sensing Godzilla's plight, would disperse into spores and arrive to assist him in the resulting battle. While badly hurt, Biollante succeeds in helping her brother slay the kaiju.

Breaking apart into spores, Biollante would arrive on Birth Island, reviving the island and being joined by her father Dr. Shiragami to live in peace.

A conglomerate of alien races would invade Earth with an army of monsters, including a second Gryphon and a MechaGodzilla constructed by the Simians.

During the battle, M would arrive and face off with Hedorah, his own toxic powers making him immune to the Smog Monster's toxic nature and making him a perfect counter. Biollante would arrive, now in a much more monstrous and reptilian form. Due to multiple alien threats, Union Mechagodzilla was repaired and sent into battle, ultimately facing off alongside Anguirus with the Simian Mechagodzilla, which they would destroy.

During a battle between Junior and a mysterious kaiju named Monster X, a crustacean organism called Destroyah would emerge, disturbed by the fight at the bottom of Tokyo Bay where the Oxygen Destroyer had created her. Lashing out at everything around her until reaching her final form, she would enter the fray against Monster X and Junior, seeing them as the clearest threat. Destroyah is ultimately seemingly killed, but a piece of her survived, and would later be revived by Xenilla. The alien invasion is ultimately bested and retreats back into space. The even would be dubbed 'Final War'.

2010: A portal to an alien realm called the Anteverse would open on the sea floor, seeing an alien invasion from the other side via genetically engineered kaiju.

The first attempted kaiju named Trespasser would be savagely mauled by Junior when it attempted to harm a brave Azusa Gojo who was drew its attention to protect an ambulance, with M assisting in evacuating the civilians. Meeting Azusa for the first time, M would later convey via psychics that she'd raised her son well and he saw where he got his bravery from.

2011: This invasion would see a new revolution in mecha, with the Asuka Fortress being rebuilt and serving as a prototype for the Jaeger program, with other new kaiju being constructed, including a giant mechanical gorilla based off one of the Defender's occasional allies, King Kong, dubbed Mechanikong.

Late 2013: Among Earth's kaiju, Godzilla Junior and Mothra's faction would be dubbed Terra Defenders while the returning Xenilla's would be dubbed the Mutations.

An ally out battle would occur on the Defender's islands of Sogell when Xenilla launched an invasion. During this Dimension Tide would be fired, with Godzilla Junior, Biollante, M, Toto, Xenilla, and Destroyah vanishing into its void...

No Queen Bitch? 0/10

In all seriousness, it's nice to see so many scrap room guys get a moment.

BE PROUD. *HUGS*

This is a concept I call exquisite

It's almost like a linear alternate version of The Bridge's events!

5041764
Well it's entirely possible Zilla Jr. fought her off screen at some point.

But glad you like it!

5041768
I'm glad you like it!

5041782
Kinda intentional. Glad you like it!

I must say, I appreciate the work you did with all of this.

I'm surprised Ghidorah was the one to land the killing blow on Bagan. And poor DesGhidorah, even in alternate timelines, he can hardly catch a break. And I'm also surprised you didn't go with Berserek being 1km tall. Anywhere, where does M come from & what would you say differs this Xen from the main iteration aside from appearance?

5044151
I have plans in Multiverse for the 1KM Berserek actually...

And M comes from another Lost Project, Godzilla vs M.

As for this Xen, I imagine him being perhaps a bit more stoic externally, given his ice theme, and also perhaps a bit more on the cold calculating side from the outside, but on the inside being somewhat similar.
