    Update

Hey, I wanted to give you all a heads up.

So this next chapter is a pretty major one for the story - on the level of the Gourd Fest, Twilight and Starlight in the snow, and the final cluster of 4-6.

As such, I've been taking my time and am 7k words in and I know it's going to be more than double that.

So I watched the last several episodes...

It was such a cute ending. Very nostalgic-feeling. Didn't cry, but it made me reflect on the show that has been a constant in my life since spring of 2012.

If you've heard any controversy about it, don't heed it any concern. It's the squalling of children unhappy that the story isn't what they wanted it to be - as it has been every season.

    It's the endgame, y'all

That was a killer premiere. Honestly, Grogar has this gravitas to him, this insight and perspective that's already established him, in my mind, as a terrifying MLP villain. Being the source of everything evil, all the monsters we've seen, it's all on him. And that voice and the design? Oh! I love this villain.

Last chapter of act 4 is finally finished

At 44K words and 103 single-spaced pages on gdocs, the next chapter of 'The Broken Bond' is at last finished, and ho boy, a lot happens. I just need to edit it - expect it Saturday if not tomorrow. Thank you all for being patient with me.

And it's great, at long last, to finally have set in stone Gen 4's primary antagonist. Grogar. What a great villain already, and he's not even done much. Just his existence and what he's demonstrated spells good things for this season.

I have not seen the premier yet, but after reading this, all i can say is that i am intrigued.

This seemed to focus more on pumping up what's to come than trying to be a legitimate promise to end the world with the opening villain. Even with how much crap went wrong for the Mane 6, Grogar reassures us in the beginning that Sombra is going to fail. Which I'm GLAD for. I only saw the first trailer for this special, and I was really worried that they were going to try and pass Sombra off as the ultimate threat. Because even though I like the season 3 opener, Sombra as a person is a complete throwaway. I was praying that his involvement in Season 9 was going to be some kind of joke. But I never expected to be CORRECT! He's more like the ending boss to just the first level, when you're still learning the game mechanics. Part of Sombra's charm is his massive ego, so certain that he IS the big bad. Of course it's made possible by the fantastic flair of Alvin Sanders... who was also the voice of FlutterGuy in S4!

This was the biggest departure from this show's style of openers; at first, each would be it's own self-contained milestone events trying to cram as much awe in as it could. Then the season openers and closers joined together to become something worth watching back-to-back (with maybe some episodes required seeing in between).

What makes Grogar most terrifying, to me, is I went into season 9 expecting the FINALE to be what the opening is: villains destroys the Elements, it's the most dire it's ever been, and the girls realize that they themselves are the Elements and defeat the bad guys. All is well.

But since that's the opening, it makes me wonder how it could possibly get worse.

Instead of what I thought, Grogar used this as a demonstration. He knew the Elements were just a means to an end, and that the key to success is breaking the girls apart. That has to be it, there's no other way and he knows it.

As for Sombra, while in a meta sense he was a brilliant joke, in the show's world he's definitely a smart and formidable foe which all around makes him one of the show's best written antagonists.

It's a hauntingly beautiful illustration of what Grogar's rule was like. I couldn't NOT use it with a name like Apex Sovereign.

I've got great hopes for what they will do with Grogar, while we don't know much about him, what we know is enough to make us afraid of what he can do, and while I'm disappointed Sombra didn't do that much, him destroying the Tree of Harmony and the Elements, which also made the Everfree free(er) shows that the bad guys are not joking around. Though I'm really wondering if they'll do something with the Everfree or just make Starswirl magic it better.

Grogar is extremely powerful he only needed to give Tirek a little bit of his magic to power Tirek to a state that took him stealing several ponies full magic.

I liked Sombra here too. He was a little less threatening and more hammy, but he was still powerful and even smart too. Him faking his defeat to find the tree of Harmony was a good plan. I wonder if Grogar is going to bring him back since he did tell Sombra to submit to him when he fails again.

We’re going to get at least one episode dedicated to the villains before the finale and I’m glad because the villains have a really good dynamic with each other.

What if the ending just throws it back into Gen 1?
