A couple of words on Article 13 · 1:54pm Mar 30th, 2019
You people are freaking out over nothing.
First off, this is not a regulation, it's a directive. What that means is that it only establishes the results it wants to achieve, but leaves how it should be achieved up to member states. I've seen people say things like "this is a bad law, because it doesn't establish how things should ba handled," and I'm baffled by how someone could try to give their opinion on this when they don't even understand what they're talking about. Most people seem to have simply heard about it online and then jumped on the bandwagon without doing any actual research.
Second:
this Directive shall leave intact and shall in no way affect existing rules laid down in the Directives currently in force in this area
Everything that was allowed and specifically protected by existing laws will not be harmed by this. Stuff like criticism or parody is not affected by this.
Third, has any of you actually bothered with reading Article 13? I have. It does not say any of the shit people are acting like it says. People are acting like this will somehow give rightholders the ability to wipe away everything they don't like ad it just doesn't. The agreements the article talks about will still need to follow existing laws, all this does is harm those sites that flat-out ignored the redistribution of unaltered copyrighted material. Not only that, but it specifies the need for a way for users to dispute the claims, so no, stuff will not just be removed without you being able to do anything about it.
We have yet to see how the Directive will actually be implemented by each state. I perfectly understand the concerns some people might have, because yes, the article could be interpreted in a certain way. But that doesn't mean it will be interpreted that way. Have a little trust in the people who'll have to make those decisions for once, and don't start screaming like it's the End of the World when nothing has actually happened yet, please. You're fucking annoying when you do that.
