Live Life and Love · 5:51pm Mar 29th, 2019

So it turns that my Alabama community is facing an environmental crisis likely worse than Flint, Michigan's. You know it's bad when you attend an official meeting and one of the panel of experts actually uses the term "holocaust". Three generations are essentially poisoned, including myself. I'm relatively fine for now, but will likely develop serious health problems later in life. Both my father and uncle seem to have only recently been affected by weird symptoms in their older ages.

Now, I'm not writing this blog to gain sympathy or even to get political (*cough* Jeff Sessions might be involved, though *cough*). I'm putting this up as a reminder to enjoy life no matter what pops up. As I type this, I'm relaxing on my porch. The breeze feels nice. Birds are chirping all around. I'm mentally debating on what tasty meal I'm about to have for lunch. Equestria Girls: Spring Breakdown is coming out tomorrow and I'm super excited for it. I'm going to continue enjoying life as long as I can. Whether you are better or worse off than me, live life and love. It's all us human beings can do.

*happy snuzzles for Nico*

Truer words have never been spoken.

Oh goodness. Probably the best attitude to have about something like this.

environmental crisis

What else is fucking new in the human race?

We just gotta make the world a brighter place, not adding to the darkness. And we don't even have to do grand gestures, either, but be pleasant to those who desperately need someone like that. It's all we can do, but it's appreciated, and that is how our souls survive.

Thanks for reminding me about the special, man. Forgot it was coming out soon, and the last season is right around the corner.

America, amirite?

I’m glad you’re handling it okay. Still, pretty damn shitty, though. Makes me glad I lost that job in Decatur after only a few months.

Difference is America is ostensibly a first world country.

We should be better than this.

Damn good attitude to all of this Nico.

Sorry to hear that. We live a ways south of Flint and that's all we heard on the news for a long time. Can't imagine what you all are going through. Hope the special tomorrow can lift your spirits a bit. Take care.

Brexit has been a disaster on almost every level, but I don't see the relevance here.

No country is perfect. They all have their issues and dark sides

5035011
Sure, but I felt the original point was more about _environmental_ negligence or contamination.

...although, since I'm not you or Dustcan, that's not my determination to make.

5035033
Its ignorant to pin it all on America when it is the result of centuries of global human ignorance

5035092
I know America is far from the only country to have made environmental mistakes. Asbestos was used all over the world, for example.
I just don't think Brexit is the right comparison.

5035116
You are correct! I wasn't using Brexit to make an accurate comparison, however. I'm just saying that the world's problems are bigger and more complex than simple American arrogance and greed and to sit back and go "lol usa sucks amirite?" is no bueno

Mmm...Google is silent on that. This sounds like the kind of news that would be readily available nowadays. How sure are you that the info is legitimate?

It hasn't made the national news yet as far as I know. We were told to stop drinking our water two years ago. The meeting that I mentioned where they fully explained our health state to us was just the night before I posted this. It might get a mention if the lawsuits go well.

Here's a good local news article on the situation: https://wqad.com/2018/09/27/i-wouldnt-put-my-toe-in-these-alabama-residents-blame-drinking-water-for-illnesses-deaths/

Somebody even made a Wikipedia page for it (literally just found this lol): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_contamination_in_Lawrence_and_Morgan_Counties,_Alabama

Huh, what a way to learn just how close you are. By the way, hello from the regional bastion of liberal heathen, now available inannexing a county near you!

Yeah, that's... not as surprising as it should be, unfortunately. I knew about 3M's presence (my grandfather worked there), but I guess I never completed that thought and realized the implications.
That it was in the name of those lovely waterproofing sprays for fabrics is similarly unsurprising.

I'd also warn you about an aluminium refinery, but asbestos doesn't poison the water table. Correction: it gets into the water, but it probably isn't super harmful there.

But hey, it's been a mild-weathered spring up here so far (jinxed it!), so that's nice.

Wise words for us all.
