Concerning story length. · 4:36am Mar 22nd, 2019
So, I've been talking with a lot of people about my stories for a while, now, and there's one thing that seems to be a detractor for many of them. If you read this blog's title, you'd know. It's the length of each story. So, I just wanted to give a little bit of an explanation.
Yes, these stories are long. Intentionally so, even. But they're also something a little different from many of the other multi-chapter stories I've seen here on FIMfiction, or anywhere else for that matter.
Most of the stories I've seen tend to go for one solid story arc and narrative that follows events in a manner akin to that of what you'd expect from a novel. This makes sense, as it's the format we write by on this site, and it allows us to vividly imagine everything in a nice little flow. Then you take a look at my first season with that in mind, and then you see that it's 57 chapters long.
I can understand why that would spark some concern.
So I want to let you know that, while I do have an overarching narrative in each of my seasons, it's also not something you need to take all in one gulp to fully enjoy. Why is this? Because, even with the overall narrative and story arc(s), there's a certain philosophy I try to keep to.
I want to make it as much like the show as I can, and in that regard, I keep to an episodic nature. Each chapter flows together in the overall story, yes. However, they also are written to be their own little contained stories that wrap up in one or two chapters. There are actually a lot of times where I forget to call them "chapters" instead of "episodes". Part of me thinks that doing it this way makes my work a little more easy to digest, but I can't tell for sure, because I'm the one doing the writing.
So, tell me. Is the episodic nature of my chapters easier to handle than the way most writers go about it? I'd like to hope so!
