Meh, I don't know.

Granted, the trailer did tug my Heartstrings, but after Season 8, my expectations are really low. I actually enjoy the Equestrian Girls shorts more than 80 percent of Season 8.

I hope they've gotten their shit back together and give it a worthy send-off.

Yeah, true. I will admit though, the idea that Celestia is retiring does bother me a bit since she's barely done anything on screen for her to make such a statement. The one time she actually did something or at least tried to was when she fought Chrysalis. She kind of reminds me of Odin from Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thor's father sat on the throne for every movie, acting like a feeble old man. The only times he actually did something was during the beginning of the Thor trilogy, during the second movie when all he did was shoot some energy out of his staff and that was it. In the 3rd movie he just withered and turned to dust.

And I'm just not sure how this will work. Twilight runs a school, is the Princess of Friendship, runs off to fight evil every time the map calls out to her and her friends, and now she's going to run an entire kingdom.

I feel like the writers are pushing too hard to make a solid conclusion to this series.

One thing I have to say about post Season 5, even though Season 7 is my second to favorite, is that the episodes are becoming more and more like fanfictions than early Gen 4 MLP. This makes sense, since most, if not all, of the staff has been replaced.

I also have a feeling that the new staff isn't well-versed in writing antagonists. Most of the finales and premieres in recent seasons either didn't have one at all, or they just dropped the ball when they made their own, like with Cozy Glow and Neighsay.

That's probably why they brought Sombra back. People liked the return of Chrysalis, so they probably hoped to get the same effect.

But these are just speculations. I'm really looking forward to it and hope they will finally manage to keep the overarching theme of the season up, unlike with 8.

That was a big mistake. Like you said, earlier stories felt more solid than these stories we have now. I think a good chunk of that comes from the fact that this series was based off of a comic so the story they needed was already there, there was no need to think to hard on what each season should have been like, but now it appears that the seasons have caught up and now the writers are forced to think of new material.

For me, it bothered me on how Luna is retiring since she only returned back to ruling since a few years at most.
It just felt like theres this huge imbalance here.

What are your thoughts on the finale by the way?

I never thought of that. It didn't make sense for Luna to retire since she was sealed in the moon for over a thousand years while Celestia ruled Equestria, so when Celestia retired, Luna should have taken the mantle.

It was.. okay I guess, but it could have been better. The entire episode was about Twilight talking about her friends in a past tense as if they all passed away and only Spike remained and we don't know how the other characters are doing.

Like, how old is Flurry Heart now? What about Shining Armor and Princess Cadence? I would have liked to have seen how the Crystal Empire looks now. I mean with all of the dangers Twilight and her friends had to face through out the years, I'm sure they had to fight another great evil and I'm sure the Crystal Empire had to have been attacked again. I would like to know how they're doing.

Then there are the Pillars. I can assume that Starswirl has passed away, but I would like confirmation on that. Twilight spoke so highly of this guy that I would have liked some more interactions between the two. Also I'm curious about Flash Sentruy. Twilight did have interest in him during the Equestria Girls film and even the pony counterpart. Did anything come of that throughout the years passed?

All in all, I feel like the writers was trying to make a solid ending, but didn't think of all of the loose ends that would come about it. Honestly, for the finale, this should have been a 2 parter. We did have our two parter with the episodes previous to the final episode, but for the final ending, everything should have been addressed.

***You don't have to read this next part, during my typing, I went on a rant about the Elements of Harmony***

I feel like this season didn't give the series enough justice. One of my problems is the Elements of Harmony. The last two seasons diminished the power and importance of the Elements of Harmony. First we learn that the Elements of Harmony (Most powerful items in series) was created by Starswirl and his team. Originally the Elements laid in mystery. Who created them? These items are the counterparts to the spirit of chaos, Discord, so nature create these items as a counter measure to Discord or was it sent down by the gods (if there were any) as a balancer to Discord?

All of that went out the window when we found out that Starwirl and his friends had a hand in it, so that means that ANY creature can create their own Element of Harmony if they know the spells. Back then everyone had this idea that the Elements of Harmony were nigh-indestructible except being shattered by creatures similar in power to Alicorn magic and it's not that hard to believe since the story made it clear that these items were the most powerful items in existence, then we see them get destroyed along with the Tree of Harmony by King Sombra and it's not like King Sombra crushed each item beneath his hoof. No the Elements hit the ground and shattered like fragile glass and that was it. The writers made it clear that the Elements of Harmony were gone and in a way hinted at creating a new Element of Harmony bearers and I'm talking about the Student 6. There were episodes dedicated to them, treating them like they were the next in line, but I guess they served their purpose in the end.

The Elements of Harmony being lost further diminishes their importance when Twilight and her friends stomp King Sombra when they realized that they "had the power all along" and they did this again in their last battle, so the Elements of Harmony don't really need to exist anymore.

I feel like the finale gave the Royal Sisters a pretty bad sendoff.
On their very last day as rulers, they just fall flat on their faces again(and its Discord's freaking fault here).
Such as just losing their magic and technically got captured TWICE and ultimately got sidelined from the final battle.
All they could do is just distract the trio and that's freaking it.
(I am not even going to count the statue part since it made the sisters look bad. Like it just proves they can only deal with the villains till AFTER they already lost. And that's just the tip of the iceburge on so many issues with that scene).
They weren't even included in the final rainbow laser despite they freaking used the Elements before, their Cutie Marks were on the Tree of Harmony, in fact they were the ones who first found the Elements long ago. But nope, apparently losing their connections to the Elements means what ever significance to Harmony stuff Luna and Celestia should have from all of this must be disregarded then.
Pretty much since they can't use the Elements anymore, that's it. The sisters are screwed, they get NOTHING.
They aren't allowed to be heroes anymore and must fall flat on their faces to make Twilight and co look good.
It also basically treating Luna and Celestia as "placeholders" till the TRUE heroes arrive. The true bearers, the true ruler of Equestria(Twilight Sparkle).
Luna really got it worse since she returned from the moon only to fall flat on her face repeatedly..

It really hurts for Luna's case since I feel like they wasted her big time.
I feel like she could have gotten something since how she kicked the show off with her story ad being the first villain(as Nightmare Moon).
They could have given her something to make things come full circle. With how she started the show off as a antagonist but ends the show off as being a huge hero(like a unique hero moment).

I got a lot more to say but that's all I could type at the moment.

Honestly it was an absolute miracle that Spike didn't get shafted or otherwise I would be even more bitter.
That would be 3 fav characters(Spike, Luna and Chrysalis) getting screwed over in there. Oh boy...
