Upcoming IDW MLP storyline not canon, but not why you think · 5:10am Mar 2nd, 2019

The upcoming MLP IDW storyline is NOT cannon for the pony pov verse... and it has NOTHING TO DO with my own stupid little fanon cosmology! Anyone who knows me, should know I take it as a challenge to assimilate new canon into my stuff!

It has to do with the ultimate sin that franchised fiction keeps falling into!

Once a character has been redeemed... a franchised work will work its ass off to retcon their evil deeds as not that evil, or that they weren't really that evil. https://www.equestriadaily.com/2019/03/exclusive-my-little-pony-friendship-is.html?m=1

They didn't really lose their mind after everyone they loved were blown up, they were possessed!

They weren't just a failure who bet on their own games and lose their career because of it, their dad was pressuring them into it!

He was super ultra angry because he was full of hope!

They didn't really suffer a slow, silent, seething break down brought on by years of neglect, they were possessed!

They weren't really evil bastard, the magic they used made them that way!

They weren't already a psycho who another psycho brought the crazy to the surface, they were just a victim!

Oh they aren't really an ecoterrorist with no empathy towards human beings, they just want to save the earth!

I sincerely wonder why I DON'T feel this way about the Killing Joke.

Credit where it's due for the ORIGINAL expanded universe Star Wars novels, having Luke suffering emotional anguish when he learned his dad truly was a selfish bastard, not just the reluctant middle man of the Emperor!

Looking at the preview alone, I'm not sure if it's actually going that route. It does seem to suggest Discord still did a fair bit of damage and what not. But I could be missing something... it certainly looks interesting.

Yeah, this just looks like he's taking the blame for a being that, if left uninterrupted, would have literally torn the universe apart. No mention made of his own misrule that I can see.

I sincerely wonder why I DON'T feel this way about the Killing Joke.

Probably because the Joker himself says that Jack Napier could just be a random fantasy cobbled together by his unhinged mind rather than being his definite origin. Also the whole "shooting Barbara Gordon in the spine and trying to drive her father insane" thing. Kind of puts a damper on any attempt to cast him in a positive light.

Tbh even if the comic is what the preview shows I think may be interesting. Makes me wonder if discord of first appearance was effected by the long period of statueness. If they had put the hints in earlier, that could have made a interesting long plothook. As they discover why discord was different before vs after, why some memories don't quite match up etc. Sadly I suspect it will just be flashback retcon.

This is unfortunate. I've been looking forward to the Cosmos arc, and I may still enjoy the comic, but I really hate ret-cons like this particularly memory wipes.
