MLP villain ranking: The Storm King · 8:11pm Feb 23rd, 2019

0/10 - AWFUL (unsalvageable, never should have been made, wouldn't recommend to anyone)
1/10 - HORRIBLE/BORING (tedious, hurts to watch, a bore, no reason to watch him/her, whatever positive things about him/her are tiny and not enough)
2/10 - VERY BAD (slightly less terrible, maybe there were one or two things you liked kept him/her from being a 1 but still very painful)
3/10 - BAD (the kind of bad where you're checking your watch over and over to see how much time is left before he/she gets off the screen)
4/10 - MEDIOCRE (not awful but not really that good either)
5/10 - EH (average, didn't love or hate him/her)
6/10 - DECENT (the first positive rating on this list, fine overall, glad you saw him/her once but wouldn't watch him/her again)
7/10 - GOOD (enjoyable enough that you'd maybe watch him/her again in future, had some noteworthy flaws but is overall a worthwhile villain)
8/10 - GREAT (a solid, enjoyable villain, very entertaining)
9/10 - EXCELLENT (very engaging, awesome, you definitely recommend to anyone)
10/10 - MASTERPIECE (extremely engaging, an absolute must-see)

The Storm King

Nice to know fun MLP villains aren’t completely gone.

Tempest doesn’t count as the movie’s main villain as she was more of a foot soldier. The Storm King was the one who took over the lands beyond Equestria’s borders, it’s his symbol you see everywhere. He has currency named after him and even merchandise made of him.

And I’m very conflicted on him.

On one hand, after so many villains in a row with the same tired "sympathetic" design (and the Storm King sadly getting tacked onto another in the form of Tempest), it’s incredibly refreshing to finally have a classic MLP villain who's straight-up evil again. Just like Chrysalis, Tirek and Discord, this guy feels like he was plucked right out of a Saturday morning cartoon. He’s energised, he’s bombastic, he’s funny and he gets so much unapologetic delight out of being evil and cackling all the while. He reminds me of Professor Ratigan from The Great Mouse Detective in that sense.

And when the Storm King gains the Princesses’ magic for his staff and starts playing around with moving the sun and moon, he’s like a kid discovering that his iPhone has a camera on it. As ridiculous as it is, I can’t help but laugh at it. Plus I have to give Liev Schreiber credit for the amazing voicework he puts into this role.

With all that in mind, I should love this guy. I wanted to love him. I wanted him to be one of my top five favourite MLP villains, and one of the show's overall best villains.

But on the other hand, as entertaining as the Storm King is, I have to admit he’s really underwhelming for the main antagonist of a movie.

So much time is spent with Starlight 3.0 (Tempest), he feels like an afterthought. For the main villain of the film, he’s barely onscreen for even ten minutes. It’s the same problem with King Sombra’s debut: the movie keeps hyping up the Storm King, telling us how terrible his reign is and how much he’s made everyone beyond Equestria suffer, as well as forcing the Hippogriff kingdom into hiding. But when he finally shows up, he gets defeated very quickly and easily. Because he's not focused on as much as Discord or Tirek were in their first appearances, and doesn't have nearly enough screen time as they both got in a two-parter episode, he doesn't make a lasting impression or give that hype a satisfying payoff. And even when he does come onscreen, he doesn’t do a whole lot with the stolen Alicorn magic besides create a strong wind before immediately getting killed off (in an admittedly cool way). It’s harder to feel how much of a threat he is when the audience barely gets to see him act.

And when you see how goofy, child-like and just plain dumb he is compared to Tempest (funny as it is) and how slow he is at figuring out how the Princesses’ magic works, not to mention not knowing anything about the Princesses or what their powers even are, you can’t help but think:

“This guy really took over the lands beyond Equestria? This guy?”

At their core, Tirek, Discord and Chrysalis are fun Saturday morning cartoon villains with Large Ham levels through the roof. But they also have some level of intellect that makes them a credible foe for the Mane Six. The Storm King's just a dumbass by comparison, almost as if he wouldn't have made it on his own without Tempest working for him. Because of that, we're stuck wondering how exactly he gathered an army and conquered the lands beyond Equestria before his staff got any magic at all.

In addition, we don't even know why he wants to create a storm. Even the most basic MLP villains have some clear motivation: Discord’s the spirit of chaos so it’s in his nature. Chrysalis gains power from love so she’s looking to feed herself and her subjects. The Storm King? No clue. Even just a sentence of backstory would've been enough.

(24th June update: My mistake, he actually did have a motivation. He stated in the movie that he wanted the Princesses' magic to truly become the Storm King, not just in name but in power too.)

Overall, the Storm King’s a step in the right direction but he could’ve been a lot better. But hey, he was still a more effective villain than the Piece of Shit, seeing how he at least did something when he was onscreen.

And at least he’s fun. That alone scores him points.

5/10 EH

Yeah, they could have really had some fun with this guy but unfortunately the Storm King was hobbled by the emphasis on his Vader-wannabe Tempest Shadow. Which is a damn shame, because you can tell just how much fun Liev Schreiber is having with the part. I really like the idea of the Storm King (especially the portrayal we got in the tie-in comics, where he does show some clever traits by rewarding his henchmen for successful raids and whatnot), but unfortunately what we got wasn't quite enough.

My biggest criticism of this guy? Fun as he is, and besides the fact that he doesn't get enough focus in the spotlight? He just feels a bit too goofy. Like they got too carried away with the funny side of him and forgot that he has to have some menace or intimidation to him to balance that out some. It's a bit like if someone tried to make Samurai Jack but only based Aku off of the "thirty minutes or it's free?" gag without adding in any of the times he was scary or powerful. It just doesn't quite work. :ajsleepy:

That being said, I still rather like him, just because it's so refreshing to see an MLP villain who enjoys his work.

If the movie wasn't so focused on Tempest so much then we would have seen a bit more of him.

My biggest problem with this guy is that there's nothing to indicate why he's such a threat. What makes him so terrifying? It can't be his personality, because aside from one or two hints it's never the case of pretending to be dumber than he is or masking a psychopath. He's just hammy for the sake of it.

The writers of the movie seem to forget that the emperor at least initially was made to seem more powerful than Darth Vader, so that the idea of Vader not being the biggest evil in the galaxy would raise the stakes. But when the emperor was seen it fell apart when he ended up looking weaker than Vader, even if it was supposed to be intentional.

The Storm King gets at least as much focus as Shere Khan from The Jungle Book (1967) and Oogie Boogie from The Nightmare Before Christmas, and they're both generally well-liked villains. So why isn’t the Storm King any better?
