I've now cleared Classic Mode with almost half the character roster.
Anyone who can main Snake has mad respect. I can NOT figure out how to play Snake for the life of me.
I've spent most of today bouncing back and forth between the Spirit Board and WoL (still have a LOOOOOOOONG way to go there.)
I'm also trying to master Wii Fit Trainer as my sub-main. Not sure why.

It seems like Snake got majorly screwed in Ultimate. I remember most of his specials being a lot faster in Brawl.
He's not my main, but I've had a lot of fun with him...mostly by catching by enemy in a hail of grenades and mines
I haven't played Ultimate, but in Brawl I mainly played by setting traps and keeping close to enemies. Eventually they'd forget I set a mine until it's too late.
literaly picked up a switch and my copy today I unlocked my main (bowser) the game feels a bit more stiff but I can adapt. I like bowser because he still hits hard and fast and his new final smash is way more usefull. I'm also glad that classic mode is cool again.

Dude, I barely played Brawl for like a week and skipped Smash 4 entirely. I have the most VAGUE sense of which characters are "newcomers". :P
I do know that a lot of the new fighters are "Echo Fighters", though, like Dark Samus, Daisy, and Ken. Honestly? I'm not a big fan of the Echo Fighters concept. All it means to me is "you've got two characters who play exactly the same...why?" Also, there are WAY TOO MANY Fire Emblem characters, and their playstyles are way too similar, and I personally find them all very boring. But that's just me.
I think there were a lot of missed opportunities, overall. Like, instead of Ken as an Echo for Ryu, why not a SF character with a completely different play style, like Chun Li or Blanka? Why is Mega Man the only playable Mega Man character? What about Proto Man or Zero?

Agree. I remember being decent in using him in that game, but mastering him in Ultimate seems even more difficult
Well, if the following video is of any help whatsoever to at least give you some ideas, apparently "his main goal is to blow up."
I do have one thing to say about Smash Ultimate's character roster.
I really don't understand why they actually made Isabelle a separate character from the Villager, but the Koopalings are all just alternate skins of Bowser Jr. The Koopalings could easily have had unique movesets -- there's more than enough material from the games they've appeared in to make them all different and interesting.
