Drake's Thursday Reviews #6 · 11:26pm Feb 14th, 2019
Time for my 99th review!
This is a light, fluffy Sunlight oneshot that examines Sunset's character growth through her wardrobe. There's a couple technical errors and the piece is very short, but it delivers on its concept well and lasts long enough to still make its point.
Recommendation: Good when you have a few minutes and want a Sunlight booster shot.

This one was... weird. It opens on the scene of Twilight making plans to start the school of friendship and tells Starlight she wants her to be her guidance councilor. Starlight freaks out at the idea because she has no business being a guidance councilor, and she barely even knows what it means, so she goes to see her girlfriend Sunset in the other world to confide in her.
Then... this fic goes odd places. There is an extremely awkward tangent in the third chapter where Starlight explains to Sunset how the publication of the Journal of Friendship includes her, and it goes full meta by mentioning Sunset has a fanbase and there are fanfiction magazines published about the group including her, right down to a Sunset x Reader fanfic she knows. This tangent also includes Starlight coming to the conclusion that she and Sunset are exactly alike in their actions, goals, and redemptions.
The ending of the fic is pure nonsense. The group uses the term "girlfriend" throughout the fic, which I took to just mean "my friends who are girls," I know women use that term for each other platonically sometime. But no, it turns out they actually mean the romantic sense, and the fic ends with the three of them plus Trixie deciding to all make out with each other on top of the Cutie Map.
The character beats from Starlight are good, she and Sunset work off each other well, the humor is good in many spots, and there's strong continuity with other episodes to build on the idea Starlight is a great, logical pick for the position. And, hey, I'm always down for sexy times involving any combination of Sunset, Starlight, Twilight, and/or Trixie. But combined in this manner, they don't gel at all.
Recommendation: It begins as a light character piece and morphs into a meta-commentary polyamory. Huh?
This is a short but impactful piece, depicting Luna getting a gift for an unspecified loved one. The process by which she creates it is no simple thing, though, the literal forging of someting precious with the combined power of all three races, symbolizing something that could only be made by an alicorn. The visuals are strong and the language forceful in imparting what each element of the gift's creation means, creating a great spectacle for visualizing what Luna is doing.
Recommendation: A short but good piece.
And next week, my 100th review, and I'm off for days beforehand. I began my 2019 reviews commenting how I felt forced to review a fic - this one is one I've seen a lot of in my social circles and has been overdue.
Come back next week for my 100th review, A Study on Chaos Theory.
Ooh, a hundred reviews. :D Congrats!
Moonstone is good stuff
