Winter Update for Sunset of Battle

Going to be a short update.

Chapters 15 and 16 are in the final editing phases now. I'm waiting to publish anything however until after chapters 17 and 18 are done so I have the latitude to tweak 15 and 16 as needed. Once the current story arc is finished I'll start posting the chapters on a weekly basis.

    That is all...

    Like I said; short update.

    XD

    A minor alteration...

I made a minor edit to the most recent chapter. There were two little words that had become a massive pain in my arse working on the next chapter. They were, 'to her'. :twilightangry2: It was leading to rabbit holes of character arguments that spiraled into hellish domains where finding a feasible 'out' for Sunset grew dire indeed. After several attempts I've decided to just rip out the root

Nearing the end of Schola Arc, and future planning.

So, as I begin to near the final rise in action for the schola arc of Sunset of Battle I'm looking more and more ahead to what I want to do with the story and where to go next. My general plan is to do a time-skip to when they are novitiates and start the next arc in-media res. But what to do and who to have as the antagonists?

Equestria Girls: Adepta Sororitas · 7:50am Jan 23rd, 2019

This was an idea that popped into my head the other day. Been reading a fun RWBY - EG crossover, and started to get into Warhammer 40k making a Sisters of Battle army. The two combined and this abomination was born. Been writing it in physical form while I'm hanging out at the local game store before and between games of Magic. (I am such a nerd...)

*****

EG - Sister of Battle crossover

Canoness Stephanie Watney lightly padded along the corridors of the empty order fortress. As with most things in the galaxy spanning Empire of Mankind, the compound overflowed with the oppressive weight of history. For thousands of years it had been home to the Order of the Cerulean Chalice, and it had been ancient when they'd purchased the chain of volcanic islands on which it was situated.

The walls were covered in oil portraits of the great martyred sisters from floor to towering gothic ceiling. Between them hung the holy litanies detailing the sisters lives and deaths. Evenly spaced, towering statues of the God-Emperor broke the portraits into sections. When she'd been a novitiate she'd learned all the canticles of the fallen sisters until she could recite them to perfection even while in the midst of hand-to-hand combat.

Usually, this portion of the fortress was filled with song, the sisters required to maintain the psalms to the emperor at all hours. A hundred sisters kneeling in the great chapel before the rose window depicting the Master of Mankind in the glory of his might. With hands clasped and heads bowed they sang until their throats bled, and then they continued. Persevering through hunger, weariness, and pain. For if the God-Emperor, entered on the Golden Throne, could continue protecting all of humanity for ten thousand years, through wounds mortal to any lesser being and delivered by his most beloved and treacherous son, then how could they allow mere fatigue to still their voices when it was for Him they sang?

This day only a single sister remained in the chapel to maintain the endless psalms, and her voice could only travel so far no matter the fervour in which they was given.

The rest of the sisters were away. Off planet. Combating the enemies of mankind with the holy trinity of bolter, flamer, and melta.

"I should totally be with you girls," Stephanie sighed.

Somebody needed to stay behind to keep vigil over the order fortress, and continue the education and training of the novitiates. They would be needed to replace the sisters who, inevitably, fell in battle. This was a simple truth. For the enemies of the empire never slept, and neither could its defenders.

It was as she was crossing the main parade square that Stephanie noticed something decidedly odd.

Over her many years Stephanie had seen many things that could be called weird, unnatural, or even impossible. Psykers unleashing the chaotic power of the Warp to rend fully armoured rhino troop transports into goo. Sisters who'd died rising to fight anew. The malformed shapes of genestealer cultists. Deamons of Nurgle lumbering on grotesque, twisted legs to crash against the mighty frame of an Imperial Knight. Golden necron soldiers emerging from sandy dunes, plasma launchers belching emerald death.

These, however, were all part of the reality of a Sister of Battle in the Order of the Cerulean Chalice.

A young, flame haired girl in tight fitting blue pants and short-cut top and jacket trying, and failing, to walk in front of the ancient equine statue gifted to the order by the Convent Prioris of Holy Terra in the middle of the plaza didn't fit with these realities.

Stephanie knew all the full-fledged sisters, and the girl was far too young to be one of them. Her clothes were also strange, and a novitiate would never wear anything but their vestments. As for the servitors of the order, they were forbidden from entering this portion of the fortress. The girl was, therefore, not a member of the order.

So, how did she get into the very heart of the fortress, situated as it was atop a volcanic island with no beaches and only a narrow stone staircase carved into a hundred foot tall sheer cliff as an entrance to non-members?

"Hey, you, identify yourself!" Stephanie's voice, honed on a battlefield, cracked across the plaza like a bolter slug.

The girl snapped upright with a yelp. Already unsteady, the motion made her teeter for a second, and then fall to her backside with a further cry of frustration.

Sighing, Stephanie briskly swept across the ferrocrete plaza. As she drew nearer to the girl she dropped a hand to her inferno pistol on her hip, in case the display of helplessness was only an act. If the girl was a threat, then she would be dealt with accordingly, and Stephanie would never be caught off-guard.

As she neared, she heard the girl growl to herself. "Stupid, Sunset, this entire plan was so stupid. Look what you've gotten yourself into now. If Celest-"

With an audible clack, the girl snapped her mouth shut and smiled up at Stephanie.

Leaning forward to use her hands to push herself up, the girl-who could be no more than eleven or twelve Terran standard years old-stood back up.

"Good, um, afternoon, uh... ma'am? I am-"

"Totally intruding on sacred ground," Stephanie supplied sharp enough to make the girl flinch. "Who are you, and where are you from?"

"Sunset Shimmer," the girl supplied, licking her lips as she darted a furtive glance around the plaza empty but for them. "I'm from a town in the next valley over."

Sunset smiled, trying her best to appear innocent, obviously unaware the nearest valley was half a hemisphere away back on the mainland super-continent.

Aaaaaand, that is all I've written so far. Not sure if anyone is interested at all, but thought I would share what I am doing for practice and keep myself from over-thinking aspects of Myths and other stories. To anyone who knows much about Warhammer 40k it is probably very obvious that I don't have much knowledge of the setting myself. I only started really getting interested in the game and setting just before Christmas. My brother has been putting together a Space Marine army, and I saw some artwork for the Sisters of Battle and was all, "Great Scott! That looks awesome. I am so in." :rainbowdetermined2: So, yeah... Now I am getting into modeling and painting Warhammer 40k... On top of my Magic the Gathering addiction. I hate having money in my bank account it seems...

As a fellow "interest outweighs the knowledge" 40k fan. Gib more!

Well, I wont make any promises, but I intend to write down stuff for the Order. Using Sunset as an outsider view-point for what would, ostensibly, just be a whole bunch of world building, history, and figuring out the characters of the army; it sort of made sense the other day. Every other time I've tried my hand at this sort of project it fell apart after just a single chapter, or so. The Battletech crossover in particular comes to mind... :facehoof:

Since I am using a journal to write it while away from the computer, that could give it more legs. Or it could doom it to never being transcribed. That has happened to a couple completed side-stories. :twilightblush:

Firstly, Yes, Yes, Oh My Celestia, All Of My Yes, I would Gladly See You Write More Of This.

Secondly, if you plan to continue this, and need more lore, I am fairly sure the ponies in the FimFiction 40K groups (Linking the biggest here) would gladly help you out. Their are also at a few writers on this site that are dedicated to MLP/40k crossovers whose knowledge of the Universe is quite deep. (iowaforever and SFaccountant are the two I know best) who would likely be quite willing to help.

Also 40K Theories is quite possibly a useful resource to you. Specifically his 40k lore for newcomers videos (Specifically this video,) as well as This video on Living Saints.

Also I encourage you to look up Saint Celestine and Ephrael Stern who easily win the titles of First and Second most badarse women in the Imperial of Man (As of the 41 Millennium. )

Finally it will be interesting to put 'corrupt Sunset' into 40k. Unlike Equestria Girls, 40k is MUCH worse off then under Celestia, so she will actually have a force that could push her to return with regret.

On the same token, 40k shows just how dark a nation led by 1 continuous dictator can go....so she could be pushed the complete other way, into the awaiting hands of Chaos.

And then their is the future to consider. If she does still desire her revenge against Celestia and Twilight, just what form does that take....and just how will Twilight handle arriving in the 41 Millennium.

While you likely will only cover some of these, the potential of this story is truly fascinating.

Also if you can't tell I maybe a big fan of the Sister's of Battle. If I had the money or the patience they would be my army in 40k

I only have a vague idea of the setting. Grim, dark, grimdark, chaos, marines, chaos marines, space marines, HERESY, ork boyz, god emperor of mankind, Tyranids, etc. So I cannot really judge how you represent the setting. But what you wrote did keep my attention, and got me curious for more.

Needs more Ork

Always good to see more 40k horse words. (For some reason, MLP crossovers with hyper-grimdark universes just work really well.)

Could we by any chance get a link to that RWBY crossover?

5001260

Which o' dem big orkie boys would be bestest? :trollestia:

5001335

I've found the hyper grim-dark either hit or miss. The ones that try to take themselves super seriously don't interest me as much as the ones that understand the inherent silliness of their over the top dark settings. Warhammer, to me, isn't actually dark but silly. A parody of sorts.

The story I've been reading is SAPR by Scipio Smith. They have a truly impressive output, with updates at least once a week, and often two or even three times. Its almost enough to get the competitive fires burning. :rainbowdetermined2:

5001219

Thanks! I'm not even too sure what the plot would be about other than Sunset trying to survive and keep her status as effectively a Psyker hidden.

5001217

Well, I already have the models for Celestine and her Geminae Superior put together. Need to prime and paint them at some point. I have the paints even. It is just a matter of finding the time. I would also like to practice first on some less detailed models. Celestine is jumping a bit far into the deep end of things.

Really hoping the add more characters and bad-ass sisters when the plastic line of models come out later this year.

Those are a nice number of resources for the story. Thanks! I'm not really sure I'm ready to share with people who really really know their Warhammer lore. I'm really glad this little snippet was enjoyable, but it is probably full of lore errors. Acceptable in a blog story, but something the Warhammer equivalents to Magic's Vorthos players would no doubt pull their hair out if it was a 'proper' published story. :twilightblush:

I'd certainly read more of this.

Love the idea! I’m sure it’s great to have a creative outlet that might not be as restrictive as Myths. I just got back into 40k after a long break. Still having the same problem putting paint on models you are though. Perfection is the enemy of progress.
One thing I’ve noticed in nearly all of the 40K books I’ve read is that the Imperial War Machine is zero chill. Even a novitiate in the Sisters would likely speak in an extremely formal manner. I doubt any of them would say “totally.” 😄
Have you checked out https://www.fimfiction.net/story/62041/the-god-empress-of-ponykind ? It’s 100% fan service, but a fun read if you’re into 40k and MLP.

5001599

There is actually a reason behind the 'totally'. But, I think it best to keep it under my hat in case I do write more of this story and order minoris. Suffice to say, these sisters have a different accent then other parts of the Imperium of Man.

I've seen the story God Empress of Ponykind, but not read it. The next thing I read will probably be the Sisters of Battle Omnibus. That should get me enough information on the sisters.

I would read it, no hesitations.

I'm currently reading the The Empress Returns and SAPR and no arguments from me they are both really good stories.

You don't have to go it all alone - I am sure in the 40K group you could find some friendly pre-readers who would be more than happy to help with fact checking, story ideas, and things like that. :pinkiehappy:

5001674
Fair enough. Enjoy 40k! Still trying to work up the nerve to start painting my Tau. Best of luck with your new hobby! Sounds like you’re getting into Sisters at just the right time to not have to buy everything in pewter. 😀

5001847

I don't particularly mind the look of the pewter models. Faces/heads could be better, but otherwise they aren't that bad at all. Here is hoping the new plastic models don't ruin the sisters Gothic aesthetic, whenever they come out.

5001736

Honestly, I probably wont post any more of the stuff I write for the sisters as the world is far more of my brother's creation than mine. Bouncing ideas back and forth is something we do for fun, and I have been getting into the minis as something to do with him. Painting is the right combination of stressful and relaxing. A bit like meditating so you don't mess up brush strokes. ^^;;

5001940
I was more talking from a cost perspective.

5001957

Yeah... There is that issue. >.<;; Cost is crazy. Another reason why I am waiting for plastic sisters.

5001973
I first got started in 4th edition when half the armies were metal. Terminators, chaos demons, named characters. Ugh. Even if resin sucks in a lot of ways, it’s miles better than having to work with miscast pewter.
