Ok, so here's the timeline for Full Circle, as I promised. Since it has a lot of spoilers, I've blacked a lot of it out as "spoiler". I really encourage people not to read it until they've finished the story. I'm happy to take suggestions, by the way.
Before the Two Sisters (BTS) 104 – Convinced by their advisors, Princess Platinum, Commander Hurricane, and Chancellor Puddinghead sign the peace treaty, and later that year the Constitution, that creates the Unified Principality of Equestria. There is relative peace for nearly 100 years, until Discord comes to Equestria in BTS 4.
Year of the Two Sisters (YTS) 1 – Discord and the Sirens are defeated by the Two Sisters and Star Swirl, respectively. Death of Star Swirl the Bearded. The Principality of Equestria is re-founded by Celestia and Luna.
YTS 2, October 31st – Luna gives herself over to The Night Mare, duels Celestia, and is exiled to the moon by the power of the Elements of Harmony. Although Celestia is able to overcome her sister, she is forced to wield the Elements alone, breaking her bond to them. She soon realizes that, if Nightmare Moon ever returns, another pony will have to face her. She begins her millennium–long search for this pony.
YTS 984, 5 June – Sunset Shimmer is born.
YTS 985, 9 June – Twilight Sparkle is born.
YTS 985, July – Sunset Shimmer is rendered an orphan. She is taken to the orphanage in Canterlot.
YTS 991 – Sunset Shimmer is accepted as the personal student of Princess Celestia at the age of 7. Celestia realizes that Sunset has the potential to become a High Princess – the first pony born with this potential since Luna’s birth 1028 years before.
YTS 995 – Rainbow Dash’s first Sonic Rainboom. Twilight Sparkle is accepted as the personal student of Princess Celestia at the age of 10. Celestia realizes that Twilight is destined to wield the Element of Magic, unite the Elements of Harmony, and defeat Nightmare Moon
YTS 999 – Mi Amore Cadenza, a Pegasus from a relatively unknown and remote Equestrian village, defeats a witch and spontaneously ascends to alicornhood. She is adopted by Celestia as her niece (as her parents are still alive) and is brought to live in the palace in Canterlot so that Celestia can instruct her. Sunset Shimmer’s jealousy of her begins.
YTS 1001/AD 2011, March – Sunset Shimmer flees into the mirror world. She is 16.
YTS 1002, June 22 – Nightmare Moon returns and is defeated by Twilight Sparkle and the other Element Bearers. Twilight is 17.
YTS 1003/AD 2013, September – Twilight Sparkle ascends to alicornhood and is a crowned a Princess of Equestria. Sunset Shimmer returns from the mirror world and steals the Element of Magic, taking it back into the mirror world with her. Princess Twilight pursues and defeats her with the aid of the human counterparts of the Element Bearers.
YTS 1003/AD 2013, November – Princess Twilight and the Element Bearers defeat Lord Tirek. Princess Twilight is declared to be the Princess of Friendship and her throne is set in the Castle of Friendship in Ponyville. In the human world, Sunset Shimmer, having turned from evil, leads the human counterparts of the Element Bearers and Princess Twilight in decisively defeating the Sirens.
YTS 1003/AD 2013, December – the repentant Sirens seek Sunset Shimmer and beg for mercy, which she grants.
YTS 1004/AD 2014, February – Sunset Shimmer and Twilight Sparkle learn that the Sirens, without their knowledge, have been thrown forward in time. Princess Celestia comes through mirror personally to inform and comfort them, and is also reunited with Sunset. Upon her return to Equestria, Princess Celestia formally adopts Sunset Shimmer as her daughter.
YTS 1004/AD 2014, March – Sunset Shimmer returns to Equestria for the first time and is reunited with her biological family.
YTS 1004/AD 2014, April – Princess Twilight convinces Starlight Glimmer to lay aside her plan to change the past of Equestria. Starlight Glimmer becomes her student. In the human world, the Friendship Games are played. Sunset Shimmer overcomes Midnight Sparkle by invoking the Elements of Harmony. She, and her human friends, are decorated by Princess Twilight.
Nice sequence of events. Seems to work pretty well, I'd say.

Æctuælly, þænks to ðe moon in ðe humæn wörld, we cæn pinpoint ðe exæct date over which Equestria Girls takes place.
I checked it myself, ænd if I’m correct here, Sunset stole ðe crown on 19 September 2013 ænd was defeated on 21 September 2013, æs ðose were ðe þree days in September ðæt year when ðe moon was full.
Edit: Anöðer possibility is ðæt Sunset stole ðe crown on 6 September 2013 ænd was defeated on 8 September 2013. Ðis wöuld mean ðæt ðe day before ðe portal’s reopening was ðe new moon. Loöking æt ðe moon in Equestria Girls, ðis öne seems more likely to be ðe case, ðough it makes ðe story less sætisfying in my opiniön.
