Fanfic review: Fire and Shadow by Rowanoak23 · 2:18am Jan 19th, 2019
Today we looked at old Warrior fanfiction by Trinary It's an AU where Firestar doesn't join Tunderclan but instead join Shadowclan. Yes, I know this old and Trinary move on writing MLP fanfiction but it's still hold up. Plus is important to look on author first work and then their newest to see how much they improve.
Now anyone who knows about AU fanfic knows there is a way to write them and not just using your ocs but canon characters names. The most important thing in an AU is that events that go on in canon can't be the exact same thing in an AU, and this fanfiction does that really well. Some things that happened didn't at all. For example, Spottedleaf didn't die because Shadowclan was busy with Firepaw's training. This has its ups and downs. Like Firepaw being torn between leaving this clan or staying was good because it adds some character development. In the original series, Firestar was the no-nonsense guy who was forced on his job and faithful to Warrior code but questions it time and time. Here however he more clever and manipulator. Which is interesting and really wants the viewers to know what's going to happen next. But some characters like Wetfoot don't get a lot of scene time. Which is a shame because some character was very interesting.
Now let's go into the problems with the fic. Beside grammar and spelling issues, which wasn't that bad for the honesty. The biggest problem in this fanfic is the pacing. Things happen way too fast that some of the problems get resolved too quickly that I have whiplash. Without giving too much away in the middle of the story we got a rescue mission, romance problem, and decide a cat need to decide which clan he belongs too. All going on at the same time!
Speaking of romance this fanfiction doesn't have a good one. The Erins isn't that good at writing romance but that's not excused. Mistyfoot and Firestar meet and almost fell in love at first sight. They haven't really talked to each other than really about Brokenstar. Then there's Nightpaw who has a crush on Firestar and them don't much either.
I should talk about the ending. Which I'm not going to spoil so don't worry about it. But it does leave at a cliffhanger and this story is old so I pretty sure the author isn't going to make a sequel they haven't already.
Overall I give a B-. It was great AU, well used of the main characters, and plot. But there are grammar and spelling mistakes. Pacing issues but make me feel I run a mile without anything to drink. Plus the supporting cast wasn't that good. Give a read if you feel it's worth your time.
