Hi folks,

Fifth of Jan, already? What is this passage of time doing and how do we slow it down, eh?

I’m sharing this thought on life that I shared on my friend Syn’s wonderful Discord because I felt others might benefit from it.

Some who know me know I draw as well as write, but I don’t think anyone here knows I’ve painted real life portraits and things too. I don’t do it anymore because it wasn’t my passion, but I wasn’t bad.

I loved watercolours because you could blend them and create so much shape and integrity to a piece of work. I was okay with acrylics and then my Dad got me some gouache paints which I still call goulash to this day. They’re between waters and acrylics and are great for strong colour work. My least liked, if not hated, type of painting is with oils. I never got on with oil paintings, tried a couple of times, always made a mess of it...

Life is like oil painting.

Oil paintings are hard to create, in my opinion they’re they hardest of all artistic mediums for three reasons: 1. It takes an extremely long time to dry (weeks) 2. It doesn’t spread so easily nor does it dilute so you end up using more than watercolours, pastels, ect. And 3. Whatever you do ends up being permanent. You can’t paint over it when it’s dry, it’s still there.

Sounds awful, right? So why bother working with oil colours at all? Simple; they create a glossier picture, sometimes you get more realism out of them and the colours are strong. What might be hard now creates a beautiful picture in the end.

Whatever pictures you are painting right now and however hard it is, keep going. If you keep stepping back from that life and thinking it’s a mess, don’t stop working on it, because even the greatest works of art have flaws but they only make that picture better and more unique.

I know I’m saying this after saying I hate oil paintings. I dislike life at times too, it can be rotten, but unlike painting with oils I can see the appeal in life. I hope you see it too.

Guys, there’s beauty, colour and inspiration in all of you. You might not see that, but that is because you’re not meant to. It’s for us, your watching and loving audience, to appreciate you and to show you love and respect.

I’m slipping off topic and when I do that, it’s a sign I’ve said my point and need to stop. I’ll finish with this; make sure you are your own artist, and if you cannot be then make sure the person creating you is somebody you love and trust.
